Tooth Implant

I am considering this for one very wobbley tooth. It's a bottom back tooth, one up from a back molar.. My periodonist has been doing implants since 1994--in fact has one himself--but I'm looking for personal experience here.

I have one and I'm very pleased with it. It's been in place for about three years now. The only complaint I have is that they make them a little narrower at the bottom (gum line) and sometimes food will get stuck in there. There is a little brush you can use to clean this area, but it's still a bit of a pain. I wouldn't trade for anything though. I am really glad I got the implant.

It was a long process, having it done.

Second-hand experience here--two friends have had them and are very happy.

In March I had the anchor tooth for a bridge weaken so much it had to be pulled and prepped, along with the empty area the bridge covered, for implants. An oral surgeon came to the dentist's office to do the procedure. I was prepped for surgery. Everyone had gowns and masks and I was surrounded by a fairly sterile environment. Betadine was swabbed on my face. The tooth was pulled and the two implant sockets were drilled into my bone and packed with bone grafting material and stitched up. I was given a temp bridge to cover the two tooth gap to wear for the next six months while the implant takes. My regular dentist quoted me $6,600 for just one implant and didn't even add on a possible root canal, crown lengthening or gum grafting that might be needed. I started to shop around and two other dentist recommended that the weak anchor tooth be extracted and an implant done there as well. A dentist that has been in my area for over 25 years got my business after quoting me about $5,500 for the extraction, bone grafts, temp bridge, and two implants. Jodi-

Hi guys, Thank you so much! I am sorry for the delay in responding. I got a virus on my computer yesterday and could not use it. After I got that removed, I had an abcessed tooth. I was in such pain last night that I went to the ER at 4 AM. None of the dentists answered at their "emergency no.". I finally found a dentist at 7 AM and he pulled the tooth. The infection had gone into the bone. Now I am looking at a 4.5 k tooth implant...not what I need with these housing expenses. Not to mention I am so swollen I look like a pumpkin. I am taking your advice and going to look at casaerstone. I did not like the silestone white, but I'm hoping casearstone will look better. The thing I like about the okite is its a matte finish. To have it shipped from Italy is not very expensive...the cost per sq. foot is about $20-22 plus installation. The problem with the shipping is the time. I would much prefer to have something sooner. I got my kohler stages 45" sink also...it is HUGE. It looks beautiful. They have started replacing the glass as well..looks so much better! The kitchen will have two 8 foot sliders that will roll back against the other glass pieced to give a 16 ft. opening to the patio/pool. I've been watching this show again on DABL, but it is now called "Selling Houses with Amanda Lamb." I also sometimes watch it on YouTube. They are still doing feature walls with bad wallpaper, and often the clients/sellers will refuse to use the paper that Amanda picks out (she has particularly bad taste) and pick a better wallpaper themselves or just paint. I do not like Amanda at all because she can be overbearing and arrogant, but I do like the sellers and buyers. The buyers still often pick none of the three options they are given - much like "Escape to the Country" (which has much better realtors), but there is a prize (I think) for the seller that the buyer likes best, even if they do not buy. Amanda Lamb is 5'-11½" (1.81 meters) tall and often towers over others in the show, especially if she wears heels, but she often wears flats. A show I like better is The Unsellables, with Sofie Allsopp, who is much better put together than Amanda Lamb. I believe it started in Toronto and then moved to England. Sofie is 5'-8", and so she is rather tall also, and she almost always wears extremely high heel - which I like. I always notice her shoes in the shoes, and they are always very nice. Sofie gets a lot of criticism on YouTube, but I mostly disagree with it.

This is wayyyyy more than I'd planned to share here or online-- as honestly, I am still dealing with the emotions around it all... but i am part way through getting bone implants and full upper all-on-4 implants. My situation is different -- my teeth were fine. I never had a root canal, caps or tooth breakage. I have severe bone deterioration -- likely due to a number of causes but genetics didn't do me any favors (mom got dentures in her late 30s). I am about 1/2 way through the process. I had tooth extraction and a large number of bone grafts in Oct. I will be getting the implants in a few weeks. They need to bond with the bone grafts and heal-- i should have the snap in all-on-4 denture in June/July timeframe (in the in between here I have a temporary denture-- which I HATE but my sisters tell me it looks great (and at least one of them would not LIE to me). I don't know that individual implants are even done for a whole upper but it wasn't an option for me. There was an option for a permanent (vs removable) prosthetic but it was MUCH more expensive (approaching 80K) and there were some downsides (including some hygeine-related challenges) that concerned me. I opted for the all-on-4 approach which is going to end up being more in the 18K range -- only about 1/4 of which is covered by insurance. I could have opted to do a partial or limited implants to start-- but honestly, my bone loss didn't improve with preventative efforts and it was escalating so I sucked it up and pressed forward with the whole upper. It would have been much more expensive to chase the bone loss-- and would have been years of major dental work. Eventually, I will need to do the same on the lower jaw also. I would have much preferred to have had a beautiful, healthy mouth but since I do not, I am so far pretty ok with where I am going. The process wasn't fun but it wasn't the worst surgery Ive had. The pain wasn't horrible-- in fact, my eye surgeries were much worse. Eating was an issue-- but it wasn't horrible and I made it through. I have a severe lactose intolerance so much of what they recommend you eat was off the table for me. Thank god for Rita's Italian Ice-- as I lived on that and scrambled eggs for the first 2-3 weeks. I had my surgery at the end of October and by Thanksgiving I could eat very finely cut turkey and many of the sides. I only just graduated to apples (sliced-- not biting into it whole) and yesterday I had steak! Probably shared more than you need just yet-- but I am hoping my experience helps you to make a decision. Now that I have openly shared this online-- feel free to ask any questions. Again, i am only part way through the process but the first part is the scariest and the most emotional (at least it was for me). I skipped over some of the challenges-- all with the temporary denture-- but would be happy to address them if you go this route.

I have had those teeth removed. I couldn't afford the implants at the time. I must say this...if you don't have the implant your jaw structure changes. Your face seems to sink in at those places you are missing a tooth.

That's the other side of the story.

I should have mentioned that I have solid teeth on either side of the wobbley one, so I think a bridge would be an option.

The funny thing about this tooth is that my periodonist told me that it was not saveable 15 years ago, but still useable for another two at the most. So 15 years later...

kfca, I have a bridge. If you get one, wear it everyday. I don't and then I pay the price of TMJ! I like to chew gum and it sticks to the bridge. They have green gum stuck on them right now. LOL!

As far as eating with a bridge, I have no problem with Steak. However, salad gets under my bridge and gets uncomfortable.

I know...TMI!

My sister had an implant. The process took 6 months or more as the area has to be prepared with oral surgery and then it healed for a few months, and then the tooth is finally screwed it.

I used to have/hold a dental assisting certificate. I'd do it in a case like this. But....a pin, drilled into the jaw could create a stable base. Then the tooth could be filled or capped depending on the condition of the existing tooth. The pin is cheaper and I've had that done on myself.

My DH has an implant. He got hit in the mouth at work one day! It took a long time to get it but he likes it. His sister who is a dental assistant has tightened it for him at least once. The only issue he has had is when he had surgery- they stuck a tube down his throat for breathing and chipped the tooth. It is an eye tooth for him. But other than that- he loves it.

If they still make the bridge like they used to, it will be hard on the teeth the wires are attached to. They may use other things like plastic, but I think they still have to shave a tooth to make room for whatever they use. I would go with the implant.

for a permanent bridge (remember this is only one tooth), the right & left adjacent teeth are shaved down, sort of like preparing for a crown, except it would be a three-but-all-one-piece deal, crown, fake tooth, crown, and that would be glued permanently.

I think the wired thing is yet another way of doing things...maybe in the case whre there aren't teeth abutting on both sides?

My next dentist appointment is a month off, so I've got time to think about it. Very thankfully, cost isn't an issue (though I'd prefer spending the money elsewhere) whichever way I go.

If money is no problem I would go for permanent. But if you are as old as dirt like I am, go with the cheap. LOL I had a new dentist who wanted me to spend big $$$$ on repairing my teeth. $1,500, just for two repairs. I got a referral from a neighbor and got it all done for less than $300.

I've had two implants. Love them! If I ever lose another tooth (heaven forbid), I will definitely get another implant. They are expensive and it takes a long time to finish the process, but the end result is well-worth it. They look and feel like your own teeth.
