Konnichi wa from Kobe

I'm sitting in our hotel room in Kobe Japan after a full day of fun and adventure.

We've been in Kobe 31 hours and packed a ton of things into those hours. Got to our hotel (which is very nice) at 6pm Monday night.

Met Atsuko, an old friend near her home and did a walking tour of her neighborhood and shops then went to their home around 9pm for dinner. Dinner was excellent. We talked until about midnight and then Atsuko walked us to the station so we could get there before the last train at 1am. No problem sleeping that night!

Met Atsuko at hotel after we had breakfast at the hotel and we walked around Kobe. She took us to the shrine where she and her DH were married 13 years ago. Explored a bunch of alley stores, Chinatown and got to know the area well enough to get around later. She had an appt at 1pm so had to leave us at 12:30pm. After that we bought an all day City Tour pass ($6.50) and took the bus in a big loop that has about 20 stops before it begins again. We stopped a few times and got back on. One stop was a hilly area that is comprised of large homes once owned by foreign diplomats all built in the style of their home land. After walking up and down the hills, we got back on the bus and took to a large Shinkansen station where the Plaza Hotel is. From there we took a tram to the top of a mountain to see the city and harbor high up. We headed back to the hotel after than and called Tetsuro to arrange for our Friday visit with him, then we headed out for evening touring. We walked all over finally stopping at the end of the evening, at a small back alley sushi bar. Turned out to be a very nice experience.

We have some time in the morning to do more things before we have to be at the ship so we might go to the Kobe Zoo. The weather has been spectacular. Everyone, very nice. We are very happy but exhausted.

I was seeing too many reviews of Kobe owners having mechanical problems, especially at about the 5 year mark with their switches. As another reviewer noted, I also don't like that they seem to be frequently tweaking their range hood features and designs. My decision was to go with Imperial as I wanted reliability. Imperial is made in the US and warranty their better range hoods for 7 yrs. Their folks were always available to answer questions and seemed to be honest when discussing the negatives of some of their models. My installer had a question regarding the schematics and was promptly put through to their chief engineer. Imperial also had more options available. The light and fan switch are continuously variable rather than having a specific number of settings. I also selected the option of having the switches wired remotely, separate from the range hood. So far, I'm happy with my decision.

I just got one. Its been installed for about 2 months now. It came from venting direct arrived in perfect shape( boxed real well). Mine is 42 inches CH 97. I installed it myself. Its heavy I did the job solo I had to remove all components to hang it. It replaced the common white 36 in hood with two bulb under a plastic lens and a mesh filter about 220 cfm . Its great it makes less noise the the old one but still it not silent by any means. My biggest problem is it makes a strange whistling in second gear. After the motors warm up it goes away (turning it on it goes to second speed) . First gear is silent 3rd and 4th make noise. You move air with a a indoor fan you got noise external fan cost about 1200$ alone then buy a hood. The control switches are strange in their function nothing wrong I just don't get the logic seem like something is lost in translation. As far hard to clean is BS its simple . I worried about the light being dim they are very bright blinding bright. I install it different than by directions I used a 8 inch duct all the way (which is larger than instructed). My roof vent had small output holes so I put a T in the duct and installed a second exhaust on the house's wall. The hood does not come with a back draft damper which I order 2 different ones for my install from the same company. The hood being 25 inches deep is a head banger for me I only nailed it about 3 times you remember it pretty quick. I ordered it with the thought if I didnt like the blowers noise I install a external blower. Which I could still do. This means I pretty happy with the hood itself. I think the most amazing thing about it at as you fire up a burner the hood heats up (place you hand on the hood) switch the fans on the metal temp goes down in in 20 seconds.

We have only had ours two years, but the model has been the same since at least 2008 through today, if that helps. We do have schematics for it (I can't recall if I downloaded them or they came with it?) though only used this in installation to determine where an electrical junction box was. Otherwise it's been problem-free. We were actively looking for US-made but found that virtually all sub-$1K hoods are made in China.

Deedles, that drawer has a drawer box of 8", which with side mounted glides means the inside of the drawer has a clearance of 9 3/4" (the front, which is only a matter of aesthetics and not function, is 11 1/2"). The lower drawers have the same 8" box, 12 1/2" front, but a useful interior height/depth/clearance of 11" - which is just barely enough for the large pyrex lasagna pan which says it is 10.5 x 14 (but that is the bottom and the top is 11" wide). Sorry for all the level of detail, I hope it makes sense and is useful. I think I got lucky with some of this, and would encourage others to be very specific with their cabinet makers about exactly what they are specifying and why. A2gemini, the paint is a copy of EK Adobe. For me, it is just the right warm/cool balance (I lean more towards cool).

Kobe and Yokohama both have great ports. So does Hong Kong/Kowloon.

And the cities are so much different from what we're used to. Or they were, 45 years ago.

Bruce, at about 20 months when we were in Tokyo, was a real hit with the shop girls, who loved his fine, light-coloured hair ... some wanted to touch it ... which didn't bother Bruce. I don't think that they jinxed it, but most of it was gone by the time he was in his early 20s.
