Kobe hood: Do you own one?

I need a 36" hood for over a DCS 30" range. I am thinking of a Kobe. I love how it looks. My discount appliance sales person, whom I have done business with for years, says Kobe isn't a good company and they won't hold up and they are very hard to clean. Please, if you have a Kobe hood, can you give me your advice? Do you love or hate it? Vent a hood and Imperial and Kitchenaide are five or six hundred dollars more. I am placing an order sometime tomorrow. Please help me decide. Thank you.

Its funny I came across your post! I am usually in the kitchen forum. Yes, we do have a Kobe 30" undercabinet and we love it. It is so beautiful with no seams. We were going to get it online (aj madison or us appliances) but ended up picking it up in the bay area. Let me know if you need any more specifics, my husband can answer those.

I am planning on getting a Kobe RA-094 30" soon from thenaturalhome.com. They have them on sale and "free" shipping. I have seen good reviews in the past on Kobe.

What my favourite is is thirds of sifted top soil, Turface MVP and granite chips, but those aren't always easily available, so the screened-for-large-bark-chunks potting soil, cut with half perlite, is usually something that's pretty easy to acquire. I have a British cactus book from the 1950s that list 27 different recipes for cactus mix, depending on the genus of cactus grown, but that's I think going off the deep end (however, reading it is fascinating!).

Baffles generally capture grease better than "oil cup" systems. In general, you need to disturb the airflow in some way to get the grease out, so apples-to-apples a baffle system will have a tiny bit less airflow than a system that takes out less oil; but often it isn't apples-to-apples. For odors, the "scent molecules" that are in the grease will come out as the grease comes out, but a lot are in free floating, so airflow is what you want. I don't think the difference between the two hoods is going to be noticeable without a flow meter. Personally, I'd get the baffles for the better grease extraction and ease of cleaning (pop them into the dishwasher).

I love my Kobe CH191 hood. Similar curved design to the 122, which prevents lacerations if someone tall runs into it. Very powerful and quiet, even though the duct has a couple turns and several feet. I rarely run mine on high. LED lights would be a plus - I'm going to switch out my halogens. Easy to clean. Very responsive customer service. The one you're looking at has the controls recessed, which would be good. My controls are just flat on the bottom of the front, and I always put my fingers on the front of the hood for leverage, so I always have fingerprints to clean off. This new design would avoid that problem.

Mine is from builder. It is one of Thermolec air heaters ( http://www.thermolec.com/en/productView.aspx?type=product&id=77) plus a separate current triggered flapper. The heater tries to heat the air to 15 C (PWM), activated by the air flow. It is a passive one and connects to the air return of the furnace via a 10 inch duct. It is not as sophisticated and highly performed as Kas's.

I have been using our Kobe almost a year. It works very well. The first time we cleaned it it was difficult to take apart. Once you learn the trick of taking out and putting back the baffles it is much easier.

I just got one. Its been installed for about 2 months now. It came from venting direct arrived in perfect shape( boxed real well). Mine is 42 inches CH 97. I installed it myself. Its heavy I did the job solo I had to remove all components to hang it. It replaced the common white 36 in hood with two bulb under a plastic lens and a mesh filter about 220 cfm . Its great it makes less noise the the old one but still it not silent by any means. My biggest problem is it makes a strange whistling in second gear. After the motors warm up it goes away (turning it on it goes to second speed) . First gear is silent 3rd and 4th make noise. You move air with a a indoor fan you got noise external fan cost about 1200$ alone then buy a hood. The control switches are strange in their function nothing wrong I just don't get the logic seem like something is lost in translation. As far hard to clean is BS its simple . I worried about the light being dim they are very bright blinding bright. I install it different than by directions I used a 8 inch duct all the way (which is larger than instructed). My roof vent had small output holes so I put a T in the duct and installed a second exhaust on the house's wall. The hood does not come with a back draft damper which I order 2 different ones for my install from the same company. The hood being 25 inches deep is a head banger for me I only nailed it about 3 times you remember it pretty quick. I ordered it with the thought if I didnt like the blowers noise I install a external blower. Which I could still do. This means I pretty happy with the hood itself. I think the most amazing thing about it at as you fire up a burner the hood heats up (place you hand on the hood) switch the fans on the metal temp goes down in in 20 seconds.

I want to thank everyone (all five of you) for responding to my Kobe hood question. Today I ordered it. The look is great and the price is right. I just hope it functions as well for our son as you have found. I also ordered a 30" DCS range and an 18" dishwasher. There has never been a dishwasher in the house and although I wish it could be a full sized unit. I am thrilled that there will be one at all. THis is for our son's Calif. bungalow house in a historic area and he is so lucky to be looking forward to these fine appliances. Now he is going to have to do many great meals for us. Yes!!!

Just wanted to chime in after the fact..I have a KOBE Island hood that was installed three weeks ago...it is beautiful and quiet..my installer was in awe of how quiet this hood was, and how great it pulled air! Of course, my visits to this site helped me make this great choice!

Me too after the fact: I have a 30" glass Kobe hood, cleaning is a doddle as I just need to clean the cup. It's a little noisier than I expected but SO effective.

I have a 36" chimney wall hood RE02 (IIRC) Goes beautifully with my Capital 36 range. very quit in the Q setting. I have baffles and somehow it creates a weird noise in the low setting only. Other than that, it performs very well. No smell, no smoke, no grease anywhere except the baffles.
