Pics plz: Mis-Matched Faucet and kitchen hardware

We're gearing up to the start of our kitchen remodel and I'm down to the last few decisions to make before we begin. The kitchen will have all stainless steel appliances - and probably satin nickel hardware for the cabinets. But I am really drawn to using chrome for the fixtures around the sink (faucet, air vent cover, soap dispensor) as I like the extra bling and retro feel.

My question is: will the chrome and stainless steel work with the satin nickel pulls? Do I need to match or does the variety of metal tones work?

I'd love to see pictures if you've gone with the multiple styles.

I dont have pictures that would show this, but ...

My Kitchen has polished nickel faucets, and polished nickels pulls on one run of cabs. I have another area that looks like a built in hutch, and it has aged brass. My island has ORB. My range has PN and brass. My breakfast room has wrought iron and mercury. My fridge has old fridge hardware, i think it looks like brushed nickel?

Maybe it will look terrible, lol. But my color scheme is very neutral and there is no pattern anywhere and I want an unfitted look. So I think it will work.

Whether it will work for you depends on the style of your kitchen. Do you want unfitted, or sleek? Do you want it to feel old?

I think mismatch is always more interesting if you can pull it off.

I think it will work well, but that is just a matter of opinion. Chrome is excellent for faucets and wears the best!

I just went through this while redoing two bathrooms. I started out with satin nickel on everything - plumbing, light and handles - but then realized that I much prefer ORB for lights and handles for my med stained QS oak mirror trim and cabs. I asked a designer friend if I was delusional for wanting to mix these on top of brass door knobs. Her reply was that if I was, she was, too, because she's designing a bathroom with exactly those finishes down to the brass door knobs. I paged through my stack of shelter mags and spotted a number of bathrooms and kitchens that mix it up with hardware finishes. It looks good because everything is in the same style. In other words, you can mix satin nickel with ORB as long as you don't combine a modern faucet in satin nickel with Old World cab handles in ORB. btw, pay attention to the ORB finishes of your choices because that finish isn't consistent from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some are a dark brown matte while others have a dark coppery color showing through where wear might occur. I think mixing different ORB finishes would be more noticeable than mixing ORB and satin nickel.

Sorry, ORB = oil-rubbed bronze! :) Our backdoor hardware is oil-rubbed bronze, which I hated at the start of our remodel, but which actually looks more at home now that it's done--it plays off of the black fixtures, I think. (We also replaced the door with a stained rather than painted door, which helped a lot too--so rather than "random finishes," we have the nickel on the cabinets, the ORB on the stained door, the brass on the painted doors/windows, and the black on the lights and accents (stove grates are black here too). Plus I totally forgot about the stainless hood, so yeah, we are not sticklers for matching finishes! (We do also have an older house, though, which I think gives us a little more freedom for finishes to vary than a newer house where everything was matchy-matchy to start with--even our windows and doors with original hardware vary in that some of the hardware and hinges have been painted over and are now "white" and some of the hardware is still brass.) Our kitchen is not open to any room except our breakfast nook, so we did match the fixture finishes there. But I don't think we needed to do that, necessarily. I would wait on your dining room fixture till the kitchen is done and see how you feel about matching versus not at that point.

WOW! What an unfortunate kitchen. You have some big decisions on this one. What Lindy did with the tan paint really pulls the different (read: unmatching) elements together. Seeing the kitchen you love, you are an earth tone person, the backsplash may not work into the remodel but leave it if you can, it is beautiful and (I think) your style. For now, keep the countertop and backsplash, just paint the walls (definitely the tan color) and buy the furniture you need. Replace the countertop with an earthtone laminate or wait until you can afford granite. I never read what the floor is made of, but it needs attention. If it is ceramic tile, you can leave it or do inexpensive stick on vinyl tile until you can replace it with larger angled tile that would compliment the backsplash. Changing out the hardware is another easy, cheap fix. I watched a show the other day where they "refaced" the countertop with a granite cover, basically making a fitted granite veneer box that slid over and was affixed to the existing countertop. It was much cheaper than a new granite slab since the pieces were thinner. I don't know the company, but definitely something to look into. Although I am not a fan, granite tiles are much less expensive than a slab. I feel for you, don't you hate it when a seller's "selling point" is your "on the list to destroy" point? Keep us updated, this is one remodel I can't wait to see!

Many people use different finishes on cab hardware--it cerntainly isn't unusual! If you're a person who has to have everything match, then I guess you'll have to make a decision one way or the other. However, if you're okay with different finishes in you kitchen, then go with the finish you like best for you hardware! Here's a link to the white/creamy kitchens in the FKB. You can go through them and see that many have used different finishes on their cab hardware than the one used on the faucet. HTH! In my world, stainless steel and chrome are almost synonyms except that one is shiny. The only one it will bother is someone whose friendship does not really matter to you.

It was never considered necessary to match faucets and, say, cabinet hardware. Think about all the old vintage kitchens with wooden, crystal or black wrought iron cabinet knobs, all paired with chrome faucets. So the idea of mixing is fine, as long as the individual materials work together.

That said, personally I do not feel chrome and nickel go well together. They are too similar, yet different. Nickel is brown. Chrome is blue. The chrome makes the nickel look dirty, the nickel makes the chrome look cheap.

I have satin nickel pulls, stainless appliances and chrome faucets (main and cold water) and soap dispenser. I think it all works together well.

I think chrome faucets are classic and will go with ANY hardware. It was the only one people used for years. It's kind of like that's what you'd EXPECT to be there. Just my humble opinion.

I don't have photos since we're not 100% finished yet, but we have a chrome faucet with polished nickel hardware and it's completely fine. (We actually have that setup in our bathroom, too.) I don't think people expect faucets to match hardware or appliances, for the most part. It *would* bug me to have, say, a polished chrome faucet and a polished nickel air gap right next to it, because you'd notice that they were different. But a faucet's not likely to be right next to any cabinet hardware so that's really a non-issue. HTH!

I have SS appliances, satin nickel pulls/knobs, and a chrome faucet. I think it looks beautiful! I think chrome faucets are classic and timeless.

I have brushed satin nickel pulls, stainless steel sink and appliances and chrome faucet and soap dispenser, like many others posters above. I stressed about whether to go matchy-matchy on everything and I'm glad I didn't (thanks in part to reassurance from GW'ers!). The chrome adds a bit of bling around the more matte sink and appliances and I LOVE it.

Thank you all for the comments! We've decided the chrome fixtures just feel right -- so we're going for it. We will check once again that we still feel the cabinet hardware doesn't clash.

Anyway, thanks again for helping to calm our pre-demo jitters!
