I need your votes

I entered a contest at our local zoo to name a couple of orphaned Mountain Lions. A male and a female.

My choice for names are...

Matilija for the female

Cholla for the male

The names are derived from local plants, the Matilija Poppy and Cholla Cactus. Here are pics of the plants that I took on a couple of my hikes.

You can vote once a day until April 22nd. It would be so cool to visit the zoo and see a magnificent pair of Mountain Lions bearing the names I chose.

Thanks!

I don't generally look at photos and see the potential as I do with yours. So here's the potential I see... Apple trees. Step 1. When they break dormancy in spring, go out there and remove the dead branches then step back and look at the tree and start shaping it the way you want paying attention to areas you want to fill and let branches grow. I would bonsai the two of those. Could be done really nicely. Step 2. The Apple trees bloom in the spring. I would pick a clematis such as Sweet Autumn Clematis which blooms later in the season and plant a couple at the base of each tree and let them climb in there. The Clematis won't be intrusive to the tree like Wisteria which would eventually kill it. So now you get to keep the trees and enjoy them and the feathered friends and bugs that entertain you. I would keep the trees. :O) OK, let's move on to the driveway strip. Well, can we deal with the mailbox area first? Let's do that, eh?! :O) Great place for a rock garden. So much potential there. If it's just full of rocks, take a bit out and throw in some sand and soil, then top with the rocks which were removed to build it up a little. Great plants for this area would be Lewisia, Beach Wormwood (it would trail over the wood with silver foliage), Penstemon, dwarf Scabiosa, Pulsatilla (Pasque flower), Sempervivum (hens and chicks), Platycodon (Balloon flower), etc., all of which can be winter sown. Veronicas would also do fine in there. The driveway strip... You mentioned that the soil is great close to the house and not-so-great on the other end. Knowing that, I would work and plant according to the soil conditions and definitely create a varied garden. When looking at the second photo, I see the need for an 'anchor' plant right at the start of the driveway - between the driveway and the mailbox. Something which would last all season with good foliage. My first thought was a hosta, a big one which can take some sun exposure. Plain leaf and dark or semi-dark. All hostas bloom in purples and whites so it would fit right in to your colour scheme. I like Karen's idea of Russian Sage along the fence here and there. It's foliage is great too. And yes, plant a varied garden with your colours. It will look absolutely wonderful! :O)

bella - I actually like your cabinet and think the scale is appropriate for that room . Your ceilings appear really high and anything shorter would look like dollhouse furniture. Although it looks alittle tight with the dining room table / chairs, it looks very balanced under the 3 windows and across from the arched doorway. I see why you wanted it and it sounds like it was meant to be. Your chandelier - off center of the table, looks centered in the room. If you hang it a little higher , maybe more in line with your arched window, I think it would look better and would not be an issue with the table. It is hard to tell from the angle in the photo. You have a lovely room.

Gray! Gray! Gray!!! No white walls, though! Light gray cabs with darker gray walls works. Or pale yellow walls. This will keep it bright and it works with your accent colors (My favorite colors are actually aqua and chartreuse). Use a GOOD quality paint on those cabinets though! Fine Paints of Europe or BM, not Home Depot stuff (Behr's, Martha Stewart) - find a color and get it matched, preferably in oil. I don't have pics, but my bedroom colors are Behr's Melted Butter walls (might be a bit too dark in kitchen - it is a very warm yellow), Behr's Flint Smoke trim and built-ins (medium gray), and Amphibian (charcoal) accent wall. Pale blue-gray ceiling (Misty Surf, I think - bought Sparkling Spring to match other grays, but was too light). For the cabs the color "River Rock" might work - lighter than Flint Smoke, darker than Sparkling Spring. Maybe "Whisper Yellow" walls - a shade lighter than mine. Again, Behr, but BM or FPE can color match. In my bedroom these colors appear a true gray - but you really have to try them (or any paint, for that matter) in your own space - the same paint can look totally different from one room to the next depending on lighting and sheen. Buy some sample sizes first. I also see this with a warm white trim around doors and windows. Our white trim is Behr's Pot of Cream, but seriously, it takes 3-4 coats (on top of primer) to cover well - not worth the "savings."

In Arizona we called that cactus "Jumping Cholla" because it seemed to reach out and grab us as we walked by.

Thank you so much everyone! Don't forget, you can vote once a day until April 22nd.

Alisande, I've heard that nickname as well and have even been a victim. :-)

Nicole. you go girl!!! Thanks.

Susanjf, here is the zoo's history...

The OC Zoo traces its roots back to 1905 when Red Foxes were introduced in the Irvine Park Region.
A small collection of animals started in 1920 by a Tustin rancher and featured a pair of pet mule deer.
An alligator exhibit was the chief attraction until a bird exhibit adjoining the deer pens was added in 1935.

The current modern zoo officially opened in 1985 as the Irvine Park Zoo and has since changed its name to the OC Zoo.
The zoo is owned, staffed and operated by the County of Orange.

The zoo is in the same area I do many of my hikes.

Well, I didn't win but was in the top 10. Here is the email I received...

Thank you for participating in our name the mountain lion contest!

The bad news is that your name submissions were not chosen as the mountain lions' new names. The good news is that you were one of the top-10 finalists! As a finalist, OC Parks would like to offer you a free pass for four to the OC Zoo and an OC Zoo cap!

Please respond with your name and I will leave it at the zoo's front booth. Simply identify yourself as a finalist and state your name, and they will give you the pass and the cap.

We will be posting the winning name and the finalists on our Facebook page shortly.

Thanks again for participating!

Thanks everyone for getting me into the top 10!
