need your vote on which dining set

I have too many dining sets and can only keep 1 for our formal dining. We have a breakfast nook where the kids eat all the time - However, when we have companies (in laws, guests in town) the adults would use the formal dining and the kids use the breakfast nook.

Choice 1: I only have 6 chairs so I will need to get 2 more chairs and a longer table (this table only sits 6 max). Do you think this is too casual for the formal dining room? Chairs can be uncomfortable to sit for a long time (no cushion). The chairs are from Pottery barn.

Choice 2: More formal. The chairs are from Ethan Allen and very comfortable. I can always change out the upholstery to something more simple. I have 8 chairs and will have to get a longer table. I am afraid the style is more traditional but may be changing the fabric will make a difference??

Love the second set of chairs, even with the existing fabric. If you wanted a more formal feel, I agree that you might change out the buffalo plaid. Would love to see an oval table with those chairs, to compliment the curve of the rolled back.

Is there any way that the large display cabinet could move down the wall (toward the camera end) or into another spot? It doesn't really seem like a dining room piece, and it kind of dominates the space and keeps the table from being centered.

I vote for #2! Number one is fun, but frankly I think the style of #2 is more special and eye-catching in every way, and looks more pulled together with the rest of the elements. Plus the quality and comfort are not a minor issue. I wouldn't change the fabric--it's gorgeous, and lots of different colors would look great with it.

On second thought, choose number one and I'll take #2 off your hands.

The foundation is primarily a ruddy smectite clay. While digging, there seems to be a large quantity of mica and a lesser quantity of rather small (quail-egg sized) pieces of quartz although brick sized pieces of quartz pop up from time to time. I originally tried using sand and a quantity of gypsum as an amendment with composted leaf mould, sphagnum peat, sawdust and manure as organics. Notwithstanding that I think it's the muckiest substance I've ever seen, the clay does seem to percolate a bit and Japanese irises nearby were severely injured. And a small mystery--moss has no difficulty growing on the surface even though I'd thought that iron sulphate (which I'd assumed was acidic) is used to kill moss. Performance is a mixed bag w/regard to plants situated in the native "soil". Certain peony varieties, notably the corals :), have in fact done better than some lactifloras I brought in from China. I routinely shuttle failing peonies in the autumn up to my parents' property which has actual soil. The tree peonies are a total crapshoot--certain Chinese varieties have entirely collapsed whereas other ones have produced gigantic blooms. The Japanese varieties do modestly well but increase of all the TPs has been consistently slow. Regarding other plants, I stopped vegetable gardening after the first year--not worth the effort; even quinoa failed to produce anything substantial. Lilacs have had a harder time acclimatizing to the clay than the peonies--they don't die, but they grow sparingly and many of them decrease--I did do a lot of amendment in particular for them and I got the soil in their holes up to 6.5 pH; of course, the holes are surrounded by a sea of acidic clay. I learned from a neighbour that the area in which I put the lilacs had been used to grow tobacco which is hard on the soil. With plenty of amendments, daylilies have done very well, although there is substantial variance in performance around the property. In digging up failing daylilies to ascertain what's going on below the surface, I found oftentimes that the daylily roots had only a tenuous hold on the clay and that most of their roots were situated in the mulch I'd put down. Consequently, I replace up to 70/80% of the clay in areas with daylilies. Such a large removal isn't feasible for the peonies, in large part because the quantity of mica is great enough to prevent digging much deeper than a foot with a spade and oftentimes the mica is encountered a mere few inches below the surface. Camellias have been removed entirely from the lot, since a season or two in situ and the poor things are nearly on their death beds. Similarly, rhododendrons fail, but kurume azaleas and flowering quince do well. Japanese maples do not thrive, but dogwood, Prunus mume, pin oaks and silver maple grow alright. That's about all I can summarize about the soil and performance in it. Oh--one anecdote: the water is acidic enough that distinct copper sulphate routinely accumulates on my shower walls, though there is very little other mineral deposit to be found (I assume the copper is being leached from my pipes).

I like the first one better as it appears to have more sophistication without the framing. Having said that though, I think that #2 is attractive as well, and at $300 cheaper, a definite contender. Picking things out is always difficult because you hate to feel like you're "settling" for anything but the best, but the truth of the matter is that, with most things, once they're in your home, the minute details fade away. If it's something that would bug the heck out of you though, then you need to go with your first choice. Ultimately, only you know what you can live with or without, but I don't think you could go wrong with either of these choices.

I crossed the "just buy more paint" line when I added one color to another to make it work better for the half wall. Plus this paint costs $54 a gallon. Yeah, I had lots of leftover paint before I left WI. I had to throw most of it out although I left a few of the most current colors. You can't take paint on the moving truck.

nosoccermom, I would love to have my laundry in a basement again, because of peace and quiet, and out of sight. I would love to have it there, so that I could have canvas hampers for different loads of laundry and have them out of sight, and I have several things, that I dont put in the dryer, that I put on a clothes drying rack, and I hate having to set it up in the laundry room. My laundry room is quite large, and is actually a mud room/laundry combination. My back door opens up into it, and there is full bath at the other end of it. Also, in our last house, I had a drain hose pop out and flood the entire laundry room, and part of my hallway, so would love to have the washer and dryer in a basement, next to a floor drain. This house and my last house are the only 2 houses, I have ever lived in, that didnt have a basement laundry, and it is the one thing, I miss the most.

#2 and yes, keep the fabric.

It is so refreshing to see not the run of the mill chairs.
I'm sure it is the fabric that is helping it to stand out.

I love the chairs and the table.

You can make a knock out dining with that check.
Have you seen the large picture of the little boy and girl
by the tall plant stand with the broken vase on the floor.
Its mostly blk & wht.

Its not an oil painting but I don't buy into the "it should only be oil paintings" rule.

I go with what speakes to me.

I can see that large pic in that DR.
But what do I know , I'm from Ky lol

The chairs on #2 look more comfy and pretty to me, but I like the oval shape for a table as in #1. No help at all, huh? lol

#2 for sure, but I also think the cabinet needs to move - can it come farther from the table on the opposing wall? It does seem to dwarf the table and chairs.

#2 is far better and better proportioned and more in scale with the room and armoire. The other set just gets lost in there. (Of course half the room height is missing for the second shot! but the pieces look more substantial.)

They look very nice together : )

I vote for #2 - very lovely set and I love the chairs. I do agree that the table needs to be be centered at the light. I guess the tall piece would make it tight on that side? Can it shift to another spot in the space or possbily switch it with another piece you have?

wow-100% consensus. This surely makes my decision easier. The table is going to be replaced so it's just a stand-in right now.

I did not realize how tall the china cabinet is until I see it in picture. In person it doesn't seem that big. That cabinet is the bane of my existence! I saw it at Z gallerie and instantly fell in love w/ it. The very next day it popped up in craigslist in the next town. I sent my DH to go fetch it, sight unseen -- he's still mad at me to this day because that cabinet weighed a ton!! Maybe after he has forgiven me I can move it somewhere else :-)

Wow, what a nice problem to have. I love the chairs in #2 and wouldn't trade the fabric for anything. I also wonder if the cabinet could move somewhere else; further up the wall, or maybe in a LR?? Don't know if it's feasible but I could also see a round table in your space. You wouldn't have room for a buffet but it would be so striking, and would help provide some balance, especially since your space appears long and narrow. I changed out my rectangular table for a small oval (almost round) and it's incredible what it did for the room. Either way it will be a knockout with those chairs.

bella - I actually like your cabinet and think the scale is appropriate for that room . Your ceilings appear really high and anything shorter would look like dollhouse furniture. Although it looks alittle tight with the dining room table / chairs, it looks very balanced under the 3 windows and across from the arched doorway. I see why you wanted it and it sounds like it was meant to be.
Your chandelier - off center of the table, looks centered in the room. If you hang it a little higher , maybe more in line with your arched window, I think it would look better and would not be an issue with the table. It is hard to tell from the angle in the photo. You have a lovely room.

I like the second set as well. And I really do love the lines of the chair. I personally would change the fabric, but it depends on the decorating style you will be using in that room.
