So my toddler put cardboard shreds down the sink drain...

Oh help!

My toddler took a cardboard toilet paper roll, filled up the sink with water, and soaked it until it fell apart in mushy shreds. Then he drained the sink, letting an unknown amount of it go down the drain. I caught it at this point, and removed much from the sink. But now the sink is draining verrrrrrrry slowly.

The problem: We have a 1929 pedestal sink. The drain stopper thingy will not unattach from the sink. We would have to take the sink apart to get access to the drain. But talking it off the pedestal is no simple task, given the way it is assembled (for example, no clearance to separate it from the pedestal without first removing the pedestal. But if you remove the pedestal first, then what is supporting the heavy sink?) Even if we did get it apart in spite of the clearance (and rust!), it might be hard to get it back together again sans leaks!

We are die-hard restorationists, so we have no plans to replace this dear old sink.

Soooooo, do any of those toxic drain cleaners dissolve mushy cardboard?

Thanks!
