White chocolate from the old JC Penney candy counter

I realize that this is a very strange question, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction. Long ago, the larger JC Penney stores had candy counters where you could buy many different candies by the pound. It was always a treat to stop there as I shopped with my mother - she would buy lemon drops for herself and dark chocolate non-pariels for me.... She also bought bulk white chocolate for a special White Chocolate Cake recipe that she had. Since the candy counters disappeared, she has never been able to find a white chocolate for her cake recipe that compares with the chocolate that she bought at JC Penney. I wonder if anyone happens to know what brand of white chocolate might have been sold there? Or can you recommend a current brand that is good? This was not 'almond bark' or white candy coating - it had a much better flavor. Maybe someone remembers.... Thanks!

Do you have a Trader Joe's store near you? They carry lots of bulk chocolate, but I admit I haven't paid attention to the white chocolate.

No - no Trader Joe's. But my sister does live in the Los Angeles area, so I could ask her to send me some to try. Just hoping that someone might have worked at Penneys and remembers who supplied their chocolates.

You ALL are totally awesome for helping (sorry if I sound like a teenager!) Great ideas and advice. You all are so right about the paint color--I can see it now. Thanks for taking the time to show me examples! (The existing paint is actually more of a gold- but looks yellow in certain spots and colors). I love those examples of the darker red backsplashes, boxerpups, with cabinets similar in color to mine. Red wouldn't match anything in my house, (I know you weren't suggesting that)but maybe a burgandy or maroon or rust would! Noobee- I can't get over how that darker backsplash you did (in the cut and paste you did over my kitchen photo) makes the cabinets and granite pop and ties it all together. I love it! I think that seems to be heading in the right direction--though perhaps the exact colors and pattern need tweaking. I love the look! Though there isn't any actual brown in the granite, some of the garnet does appear brown-here and there. Do you think I'd need to have gray in the backsplash to tie in with the granite if I went darker, with mixed colors, like that? Also, Noobee, how DID you do that cut and paste-is that a paint program that comes with windows or adobe photoshop by any chance? I'd love to try and play with that myself. I have been visiting a few tile shops, and even the salespeople there have been having a hard time finding the right solution for me. One lady who was working with me is even a trained interior designer. She was thinking darker would work, too, but was having a hard time finding just the right tile. So I really appreciate your suggestions.

Here's ours, per your request. After 6 years it still looks like the day it was installed. no stains , chips or whatever and it still has that nice glossy finish (that we Love). By the way cloud swift, your granite is stunning and it tends to match your name. I would have liked something with that much colour, but the wife, unfortunately, is not into that sort of thing, although I'm happy with the compromise we made in getting the Arandis Gold granite. Hi there, I'm a S.F. bay area tile contractor for the past 23 years and now I'm slowly remodeling my second house. I totally "get" these issues with tiled countertops. I thought I made the perfect choice on my last house with porcelain 6x6 with epoxy grout, but not so. The new epoxy grout is easier to use than the stuff from long ago, but it's still difficult to get it to turn out just right. I overwashed my counter a bit too much and the epoxy didn't seal as it should have. I always had dirt issues with those joints and when it came time to sell I got the magic cleaning answer from my realtor. Mix liquid Clorox with powdered Tide that has bleach in it, leave it on the joints a half hour and scrub with a toothbrush. It really worked! I would take a look at Customs Prism grout, which has just come back on the market. This is a grout where they've substituted the sand for glass. You end up with a very dense and tight grout joint that seems to repel dirt very well. So far, I've used it on fireplace hearths, which have got to be the second dirtiest place in a house. I still seal with Miracle brand 511 Impregnator (solvent based). I haven't seen how Prism holds up on a counter because it seems like everyone has switched to slabs. Just be aware if you're doing it yourself, that Prism grout mixes up a lot differently than normal sand based grout. It won't mix at first and you have to let it slake for quite awhile.

Can you please share their information? Thanks!! Yes I'm satisfied with the cabinet company. They have been very responsive. If you're in FL and you message me I can give you the information. Ghirardelli makes a great white chocolate..that's what Trader Joes used to carry...
It WAS a most used chocolate around here! Occasionally I can find the chips..but they are expensive!

Here's a link to bulk chip ordering..I guess the reason TJ's doesn't carry the bulk block chunks is because they aren't available?? Couldn't find mention of them anywhere.

Agree the Girardelli is a great white chocolate, I picked up baking chips bags at a surplus store last week, .99 a bag! The bigger stores must be dumping for the holidays, as all the baking supplies I picked up at the surplus store have Dec 08 expiration dates.

Also, at Wally World in the candy section I found Belgium Chololate for candy bars, they have white, milk chocolate plain I use in baking also at 1.37 for 8oz I think they are. That, also is a good chocalate.

I will have to give Ghirardelli another try. Last time I bought them, there was something about the flavor or aftertaste that I did not like. I have read good things about Guittard white chocolate (which is supposedly what William Sonoma uses in their peppermint bark), but I can't find it anywhere in my area. And internet sources only sell it in huge weight quantities. Will look for the Belgian chocolate next time I am at WM - last time I was there, the only white chocolate bars I saw were Lindt, and they had a cream filling.

I don't know about J. C. Penny's but S. S. Kresge's used Brach's candies...

Goodness, I do remember the white chocolate from J.C. Penney. We used to get candy there and one day I finally convinced my mom to get some white chocolate for my sister and I to taste. My mother would get her holiday candy at Penney's every December, I recall looking through the glass at a wonderful assortment of candy laid out in trays.

Do you have a local candy company where you live - we have a few left in Baltimore that make and sell their own candy, and they do sell bulk chocolate like I remember seeing at Penney's.

I am also looking for a candy that we used to get at JC Penny candy counter - been looking for years to find what is called Vida Sticks or maybe Vita Sticks - does anyone remember these? chicolate cover wafer similar to a KitKat but not nearly as delicious as the Vida Sticks
