Annual Christmas cake (pics)

Okay guys, one last picture post for the year. I posted awhile ago about the tradition my friend Les and I have of getting together every year and making a Christmas cake. This year for the first time in our 13 year history of making cakes, we decided to tackle fondant. My SIL is a pro. cake decorater and actually made up the fondant for us which was a huge help. This year I made a 3 layer buttermilk cake with vanilla buttercream. Here's some pics of how it came together.

First we put on a thin layer of buttercream.

Then we rolled out the fondant and draped it over the cake.

Here's Les smoothing out the fondant with a smoother. We trimmed the excess with a pizza wheel.

We used a plunge cutter to cut out the snowflakes. It was not as easy as I thought it would be to cut the snowflakes out of fondant. The cutter kept getting gunked up with

fondant and we had to clean it out several times.

Wait! I need a hug from my favorite Elf :)

Okay, now I can get back to work. Here's how they turned out! Year 13 of Les and Trace's Christmas cakes has been a good one.

Tracey! What beautiful cakes, I admire you and Les for tackling fondant! And that Elf! I want that Elf - just one hug. (That Elf looks JUST like you :)

Oh yes, the cakes are beautiful, I've just started playing with fondant in the past year or so too and it's harder than it looks!

That elf, though, is the most delicious thing I've seen for a long time, I think my new holiday motto is going to be "Squeeze an Elf!"

Awwwww, such wonderful and cute photos Jim! Sparky, Candy and the Cats (Lacy and Cagney)are looking very cute. Best side? Elmo is looking dazzling to me! His pink and blue feathers are so pretty- I call it mother-of-pearl colors! and Elmo looks very happy and content now in his new cage, LOL! It's hilarious when birds show a lot of expression in their faces, and that looks like one happy bird to me! You told me he was throwing a feathered fit when you swapped out his cage, or did you just give up and put him back in his old one, LOL! Jim, I may have to sneak in one photo here of my indoor-growing Gemini obsession, LOL! oh, my goodness, the flowers are so uncharacteristic of my usual lumpy roses! I shouldn't have put up the early ones of Gemini because those ones keep getting bigger and bigger and more and more pretty each time I look at them. This is crazy! Those blooms are as large as my outdoor blooms. Who would think that indoor roses can continue to bloom so large and so nicely. Gemini is as stubborn and resilient as a rose can be. Jeanne, what a beautiful setting. It all looks lovely together. Your DGM compote dish w/glass spoon and the other depression dishes are so neat. DF keeps telling me she is going to give me a snack set in pink that was DH's aunts and I can hardly wait. I love all of these dishes. I need to try setting a table w/o a full tc and see if I like it. You might need to bring out some more place settings if the gang shows up.LOL Simply gorgeous. Punk

Thanks everyone....Diana this one isn't quite the same as the old recipe for the which I used to make, because the addition of 1 lb of quark turns it into more of a tangy cheesecake type of dessert, and lower in fat than if it were all whipped cream. I'm sure peppermint would also combine nicely with the chocolate. Your stacked version looks like a good party item too! Quark comes in a choice of fat content and is generally considered a healthy option to sour cream or all whipped cream. The one I used for this is made from semi-skinned milk with a 6% fat content. It's still rich I know, and I've never been one to promote overly-rich desserts, lol, as I generally keep away from them all. From searching the web it seems that a half & half combo of cream cheese and low fat ricotta or just all ricotta or creme fraiche would substitute for the quark if one doesn't find it in a shop. Hope everyone is having a wonderful Christmas! Thank you compumom! For several years, we made the cake from the cover of that year's Southern Living Annual cookbook. One year we didn't like the cake at all so we decided to branch out and ever since then we've just used recipes from wherever. The last few years I've used the galleries at cakecentral.com. I agree with Kathleen, 13 years of a tradition is wonderful. The cakes turned out beautiful - love the snowflakes even if they were being difficult.

And that little elf!! I agree with everyone, what an adorable child.

Great looking cakes indeed, they look too beautiful to cut! But yeah - that elf is precious! I would never get to the decorating because I would spend all the time hugging that adorable baby!

That is just the cutest elf I have ever seen.

The cakes are wonderful. The thought of dealing with that fondant just makes me nervous.

What I want is that marble topped work center! I tried to work one in to our kitchen remodel, but the cabinet guys said I didn't have room.......I am still thinking on it. I want a slab of marble for rolling things out.

Oh my goodness Tracey! I do not think I could have put that little elf down...what a darling. Please send Les my best wishes and tell her I think her baby is the most precious thing ever. Oh yeah...the cakes are beautiful too! :)

What cake? All I can see is the world's cutest elf. Wish Santa would bring him to my house, in the form of a grandchild.

Thanks guys! We have such fun every year planning and making the cakes. I have a slideshow album on photobucket with most of the cakes. We've had a few duds along the way but for the most part they've turned out pretty well for a pair of amateurs :) I LOVE the marble work area. It's a moveable island and we can both work on our cakes at the same time there.

And yes, I know that elf is the cutest thing ever! And I think how much I miss having little elves around but then the elf starts crying and I remember how hard it can be having little elves to care for. But I enjoy every minute I get to spend with that precious angel because the time goes by so quickly and before you know it they are half grown!
