If you use a Toto wall hung toilet with an in-the-wall tank by Geberit or Toto, (Geberit makes one that fits in a 4-1/2" stud wall), it will extend into the room 21". That would leave you 27" in front of the toilet, which meets the minimum. Your other option would be to create wet room where the toilet and shower occupied the same space. The toilet could go on the back 4' wall (I would still do wall hung), and the whole floor under it and four feet in front of it could be a large shower floor. Then at the front of the bathroom could be a narrow wall hung sink. This could be carried out with a conventional shower pan but it would not be as convenient for in-the-night trips to the bathroom. A shower pan with a threshold in the front and in the back could be placed in the middle of the room and you would walk through the shower to get to the toilet at the back. A bit to think about walking through the bathroom but it would function. The problem is the door location. I am planning a second, 3/4 bath that is 7 x 3.5 that works only because the door is in the middle of the long wall, with toilet on one side of the door, shower on the other and narrow sink in the middle. It just barely meets the minimum of 24" in front of the toilet with a conventional shower pan, or could exceed it if I did a flush shower pan with trench drain.

heidia, while the current bath we just did has only had the beadboard (wider version) for just over a year now, I have had it in previous baths. The bathroom I grew up in had it. There is a difference in the quality of what you put up. If you put up the pine boards and not the thin laminate type stuff, it will last a lot longer. Also, give it some good coats of paint to seal out the water. It will last a very, very long time. Probably longer than the grout would if you put in tile. We also bounced back and forth between tile and wood for this bath. For the look we wanted it was a LOT of tile (and more costly a lot of trim tile). Good luck, Kalindi

I agree with Greg. You will have to get out the graph paper if you don't like that idea. Draw out the room with precise measurements of where the door and any windows are. Look for the smallest shower that you will consider, the smallest sink you can put up with, and a toilet. Be aware that the toilet must be centered in an imaginary box 30" side-to-side and that it must have 21" of clearance that is that same 30" wide in front of it. So the sink cannot go in that space. In some jurisdictions, that 30" box is a 36" wide box. I would make my toilet box on another piece of graph paper and the shower, too. See if you can arrange the room with a sink in it and room to move. I am going to say that 32" x 32" is the smallest allowed shower, but I do not want to swear on that. Look at prefab sowers and see the smallest ones, it will probably be right. Then do a search on "wet rooms" and see if you like that better.

@cat_ky, it's in the design phase and nothing is built. It's a new home that hasn't started yet. So I don't have a photos to share.
