My Sweet Cat Oscar Died Last Night

I am so sad today. My grief actually feels heavy on me and I don't know what to do with it. Our wonderful cat, Oscar, died last night. He had been sick for a long time. When I woke up yesterday he looked bad and I waited all day for him to go, but he waited until the wee hours of the morning. Both Ron and I agree that he was the best cat we have ever had. He was so sweet. I wish I could have saved him from being sick. He was only about 6 years old.

Whoo-hoo-hoo! Scorcese and The Departed won!!!!! I was thrilled and I was also very pleased that Alan Arkin took the Best Supporting Actor prize for Little Miss Sunshine. Both Mirren and Whittaker made really gracious speeches about their wins, which was a pleasant change from thanking names on a list. Leo DiCaprio has long since grown out of his boyishness and his roles have gotten better and more demanding. While he didn't win last night (I thought he was nominated for the wrong movie, anyway, and thought his role in The Departed was Oscar-worthy), it will happen for him some day. And then maybe not, of course. There was Peter O'Toole in the audience, looking very longing to be recognized and for the eighth time did not get the prize. Ellen was a delight--warm, witty without guffaws, engaging the audience in ways that delighted them and gave folks like me a chance to get a quick look at "stars" when they were a little off guard and weren't in a "role." And those dancers who looked like Circe de Soleil acrobats and mimed icons of the best pic nominees were mighty clever. When they turned themselves into a VW bus and later a gun, I was laughing out loud. The show had a couple of draggy spots but then it always does, and I just waited past them for the stuff I wanted to see. Overall, set design was simpler than usual and thus more appealing. Meryl Streep fixed her bra strap (again!) and obviously needs to be better fitted in her undergarments. But she was a total charm when Ann Hathaway and Emily I'm-drawing-a-blank were handing out an award; Streep was obviously happy for them and put on a Miranda face just to heighten the fun. Jadon Smith might be the handsomest little kid around and his dad, Will, is his best audience. Talk about a proud dad. And how about Al Gore's team winning an Oscar for An Incovenient Truth? While that won't make some of the naysayers on "that other forum" happy, I was sort of wide-eyed when a man who might have been president of the US bounded on to the Oscar stage with the folks who made his film possible. Nice. Now we're into the film void. Netflix just sent me an e-mail pitching me to rejoin. They know what's going on out there. I might just take them up on the offer, at least until the fall when all this hoopla starts all over again.

I would like to plant something in her memory, but haven't decided yet. Maybe some catmint - hee-hee! She was strictly an indoor kitty, but when she was younger, I bought a small kitty leash and would take her out for a walk - on her terms of course. Sometimes she would walk and sometimes she would lay on the grass and roll around or eat the grass (then puke it up later). I took her outside in the backyard again last week so she could lay in the grass and sun herself for a while. She did try chewing on a couple blades of grass, but then decided she was going to walk down the driveway into the alley. I scooped her up before she got to the alley. Sure didn't want to lose her that way!

Well I don’t see many chipmunks but I know they are very cute. You had 5 of them? And now you have zero. I think it’s rude of the owner of the cat to do nothing about it. As you can see on my profile picture I have a cat and he also Kills birds. In fact, I have saved numerous birds form him. If the lady won’t do anything about it I suggest that whenever your chipmunk goes outside you should go with him/her just to be safe, another option is keep your chipmunk more indoors than outside, yes I know he has to feel the nature but you should get it like some toys or like some nature in your house. The last one is get a large cage and put it outdoors, also make sure the cat can’t squeeze it or stretch the wires of the cage.

I didn't watch a whole lot of it, maybe half an hour or so - I get bored easily with awards shows, they're just public m@sturb@tion AFAIC - but WHAT was it with the one-shoulder thing this year? Seemed like every third woman had on a one-shoulder dress (and most of them not particularly flattering). I thought there were quite a few "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" ;-) gowns in the part I saw. Zoe Saldana's purple fluffy number with the train - which reminded me of the crepe paper carnations that we all made in kindergarten for Mother's Day - and when she and that other woman in a black similarly-overdone thing (I think it was Carey Mulligan?) went down to the mike to present an award neither one could even walk in their gowns. Molly Ringwald's stylist should have been slapped for letting her out of the dressing room in that flappy purple thing. Lot of "fleshtone" dresses this year too, which was a little creepy. I did think Meryl Streep's gown was simultaneously age-appropriate and very elegant. I also enjoyed watching her laugh so many times, she looked like she has a really infectious, hearty laugh instead of the typical Hollywood titter. Mo'Nique looked sharp too, I thought - making absolutely no apologies for her size and I dug the diagonal pleating pattern. At first I was kind of "huh?" about the hair ornament but I decided I liked it.

So sorry you have lost your Oscar. My family and I lost our 19 year old cat, Molly in Feb. We still miss her a lot.

I hope Oscar will make some inquiries at the Rainbow Bridge. Three of our Westies are there; they all liked cats -- well, more than some dogs do. Wouldn't that make a pretty picture: black and white playing together?

I'm SO sorry you lost Oscar so suddenly.
It's never easy, even if you know it's coming. Our fur-babies embed themselves in our hearts so firmly that it leaves a huge void when they go.

He was stunning!

I am so very sorry to hear about your sweet kitty, Oscar. What a beautiful cat he was!!! I have had cats all of my life and I know how painful it is to lose a feline friend. I have four furbabys that are all getting older. Reading your post reminds me of how much it will hurt to lose one of them. My heart reaches out to you.

Oh, how sad for all of you. It's especially hard when a cat is relatively young. I have a special love for black cats. There's been at least one in my life for the past 25 years or so.

I'm sure Oscar's six years were wonderful for him as well as for you. I hope you'll share your love with another cat when you're ready.

He was a beauty, and you loved him so much. Only 6 years old? What a shame. Please tell us how he came into your lives.

Why don't you do something in Oscar's memory--make a little photo album, plant a rose bush, etc.?

I hear you when you say Oscar was the 'best cat we ever had'. All are special, but there is always that 'one'. Oscar was a real beauty, too!

I am so sorry to hear about Oscar. He was so beautiful; I love black cats! I really love the picture of him in your arms with his paws all relaxed and his body close to yours. You can tell he loved you so much...he will be at the Rainbow Bridge waiting for the time when you can see one another again.

I'm sorry to hear about Oscar. Your Oscar and my EKO were identical. EKO was 19 when he died. I don't have a photo scanned of him but I found this photo online that looks like him. I thought you would like it as well.

Always know that Oscar will be looking down at you and smiling.

He still has you in his memory and is now looking at all those fun things to do over the bridge. It is so sad but I'm grateful that you know where he is now and not wondering why he hasn't come home

We found Oscar in the woods along with a brother and a sister when they were tiny babies. The other two died. Oscar was so special because he was totally trusting. He let me hold him like a baby and I could carry him all around like that. He got sick a couple of years ago with a staph infection in his bladder that didn't respond to treatment. We tried everything but nothing worked. Ron's brother's cat came down with the same thing and died right away, but Oscar hung on. Sometimes he was so sick I had to put a tiny bit of baby food on my finger and let him lick it off. I nursed him back a couple of times that way. The only thing that helped were some herbs the vet gave us called dasiquin. Those seemed to perk him up.

One nice thing was that it was finally getting kind of warm here and he got to go outside a bunch last week. On Saturday it was beautiful here with the sun shining. Ron and I worked out in the yard for the first time and Oscar was with us the whole time. He really enjoyed laying in the sunshine all day long that day, and rolled around in the dirt a bit. He loved those dust baths!

Yesterday morning I knew when I looked at him that he didn't have long. I tried to hold him and hug him enough to last me the rest of my life, but it still wasn't enough. I miss him so much. I went out for a while today just to get out of the house, but when I came home I called him and talked to him again even though I know he's not here. I just wanted to say his name again. Right now he's in the basement waiting for Ron to get home from work and then we will bury him. He and I had a very special bond. Thanks for asking about him. I also had thought I would plant a rose bush or something over by where we will bury him. If there is such a thing as reincarnation, I hope he comes back to me one day.

Several of you mentioned the Rainbow Bridge. What is that?

Bigbaby... Here is the poem for Rainbow Bridge:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

Such a handsome lad and so sad his life was cut so short. I really am a softie when it comes to pets and feel SO badly when people lose them.

The Rainbow Bridge is a place often referred to by people whose pets have died. It is the theme of a work of poetic prose written some time between 1980 and 1992, which has gained wide popularity amongst animal lovers who have lost a pet. Although no major religion specifically refers to such a place for pets, the belief shows similarities with the BifrÃ¶st bridge of Norse Mythology. Its source is a story whose original creator is unknown.

I hope it's a comfort that he had those good times with you and all the good memories. Also that he was able to enjoy sometime in the sun (literally) with you before leaving.

I hope I'm not being insensitive and if you don't want to talk about this I will understand completely. I just wondered how he came down with a staff infection in his bladder. Is it very common in cats?

Donna, we have no idea how he got the staph infection in his bladder. The vet had never seen it before. I don't mind you asking, either. I wish I had more information than that.

When we found Oscar he had been dumped in the woods and was starving. I think that it contributed to his overall health. His first winter he got a cough that didn't respond to medication. I was even injection interferon and it didn't help. It finally went away on it's own when the weather warmed up. He was just overall kind of weak in that way.

I have a special love for totally black kitties, and I am so sorry that Oscar had such a short life to spend with you. He was well loved, and with sunshine and the outdoors, his life was full for the extent he was with you.

My first cat (as an adult living away from home, me that is), was an all black female I named "Sheba". She lived just 8 months since she had been born with Feline Leukemia. Her death devastated me since she was so young, and I didn't know much about feline diseases back then.

I am so sorry about the loss of Oscar. I know how much your heart is breaking..tears are running down my face as I type this. It's been 4 weeks since we had to let Bear go and the pain is just as real today as it was then.

Oscar was a beautiful cat and he was lucky to call you his family..

We buried Oscar last night as the sun was setting. We thought about his life with us and the other pets that are also buried in that area, 2 dogs, 1 cat and 3 ducks. I mentioned to Ron about planting something there as one of you suggested and I think we will plant a Lilac bush.

Today I just feel kind of numb and heavy. In the midst of my grief I am dealing with a number of other problems at work and with my health. Maybe that is why Oscar's death seems all the more heavy for me now. I'm so grateful for the pictures I have of him, and all the wishes from you all. Bless you all today. I feel like your messages are really easing my burden. Thank you again.
