I loved her voice, and I LOVED her in Hud. One of my favorite movies.

I was trying to remember who played her in the movie about her. Does anyone remember?

How sad. She was one of my favorite actresses, too. Always memorable.

Glenda Jackson played her in the TV movie. Did a good job, as I recall.

Tim and anyone interested in plagues and pestilences I have a very interesting book The Scourging Angel: The Black Death in the British Isles by Benedict Gummer. This is not a book about what caused the plague but instead concentrates on the spread of the disease. The author must have studied thousands of ancient records from church archives, town and county courts and even lesser manorial roles which have enabled him to track the plague as it made its way through Europe and up the British Isles. Amazing to think that a country at the height of medieval prosperity could be so devastated within a couple of years probably losing almost half the population and changing the economy and way of life for virtually everyone. The author argues that the breakdown of the feudal system, church corruption, 'peasant power' etc would have happened anyway, but that the Black Death probably speeded it up. Lots of useful maps to help you find your way along the 'plague routes'. Here is a link that might be useful: The Scourging Angel

Who watched the Oscars?

I watched the first hour and then taped the rest so that I could watch Downton Abbey, then I switched back to the Oscars. I think I'll just tape them every year - then I can fast forward through the commercials and boring parts. It's just way too long. Neal Patrick Harris was surprisingly disappointing. He does such an outstanding job when he emcees the Tony Awards. Last night he was uninspiring - flat jokes, silly one liners and how embarrassing that he couldn't manage to pronounce David Oyelowo's name correctly. Some other thoughts - Dakota Johnson was stunning in her red gown while Melanie Griffith looked like she was wearing a plastic mask. Julianne Moore was radiant, Kerry Washington wore a really elegant gown, Lady Gaga sang beautifully and I for once I wasn't completed distracted with her costume. Redmayne was adorable. John Travolta was creepy. I want to tape J.K. Simmon's acceptance speech - just the part about calling (not texting) your parents.

I watched the Red Carpet with the sound turned off. Then I watched reruns of Victoria on PBS and the latest episode of The Walking Dead (which is getting too gruesome). I flipped back to the Oscars on commercials and saw the pretty young singer get clipped in the head by a blue banner. I decided I had really had enough when they brought in the "faux tourists". You think they could have hired better actors for that. It was ridiculous. I saw the Best Movie mix up on the web this morning. I am very sorry that it was first blamed on incompetent older actors/presenters. Someone's head should roll at Price Waterhouse. It was a shame the thunder was stolen from Moonlight's success. I did love La La Land, though. Sorry I have not seen Moonlight but plan to go. I like going to the movies.

I liked her, too. I think she wrote an autobiography, because I remember reading about her son's baby carriage getting hit by a car. She went through a lot in her life.

I loved her low, sexy voice too. I also admired how she recovered after having a stroke. Classy lady, RIP

She was an amazing woman. It was a miracle that she survived her strokes...and then lived another 45 years. RIP

Another great actress gone, but she won't be forgotten. One of my favorites.

I read the article last night, and at first I thought, she JUST died? Somehow I thought she had passed on some time ago. Loved that lady.
