Getting excited now - anyone (Glenda maybe?)

taken an Alaskan cruise and then on to Denali? DH and DD & her friend planned a surprise 10 day trip for us for end of July. Getting close enuf now to begin thinking what to buy or bring. Been to Alaska Inside Passage once before and know it was some cold and rainy! (in July). Do not remember what clothes we wore on board ship all the way...Depart from Vancouver. What did you enjoy/not care so much for?

I'm working on booking one for the 30th of July from Seattle on the Golden Princess. Gonna take DS and GS. IF they want to go.

We'll cruise only this time.

I went July 6 years ago, and the weather was just fine. Rainy one day, and the rest were just perfect. Nites on board the ship was chilly if you went outside. Needed a raincoat when we were at Glacier Bay.

Do carry a raincoat.

Get yourself a decent pair of binoculars, you won't regret it. I always bought them as a gift for clients going when I owned the agency...oh, and a journal, get yourself a journal!

I wanted to add something here. I just recently ordered three A. tomentosa vines to plant in a new bed. I got these vines from Pine Ridge Gardens in Arkansas, which is where I got the Georgia asters. Mary Ann lists Georgia asters as A. grandiflorus, but other sites call them A. georgiana or something like that. Many sites use the new term, Symphyotrichum instead of Aster, which has further confused the issue, which was already confused enough, because there are so many types of asters, including many that are probably local hybrids. So, my point is, I'm not sure my asters are really Georgia asters. Whatever they are, the pearl crescents like them, though, and that's what counts! I am excited for you! I hope that they continue to keep ok! I am not sure when you can plant out, really can't offer much advice there... Have you thought about contacting the person you got them from and asking them when they normally put them out? I learned the hard way with a tuber of mine, I bought a Black Wizard, I was so excited, but... I left it out one night in the poly house and even at just below freezing it is done for! So you want to be careful, that is for sure! how are they stored right now? Perhaps someone can suggest what may be the best solution for making sure they survive a few more weeks, you are in the home stretch! perhaps they should be hosed off to replenish moisture... but maybe this is a bad idea... I just don't know! One thing is for sure, what people normally do when they have a handful of tubers, is not going to be practical for you! No matter what though, even if you have to wait for mid May, my guess is that at least a decent number of them are going to survive!

I've visited a couple of folks on the Canadian and U.S. prairies and a fellow in Tennessee and been at several gatherings in this area, over the years. The first one in Windsor around 2005, I think, almost called off because several of an expected 25 or so begged off ... but some of us said that we should have it, anyway ... and Dances gave us a really warm welcome and a happy day, with cherrryfizz's help. Monica PA was there. Regretted to have missed one in Minnesota, partly planned when I was to be going through about 5 years ago ... but I had plans in North Carolina and Georgia at the time. Most recent was when Nita and Mike were in town this summer ... and I got to meet jasdip ... I'd met lucky gardnr several years ago. Attend such a gathering ... or visit folks, when you have an opportunity: you'll find that these stars almost always live up to their billing. ole joyful

Rob, my friend finally had a very frank sit-down with her f-i-l who was living in a small town 5 hours away; her dh is an only child. She flat-out told him he was being selfish towards his son and a "bad dad". I'm not explaining well as there is much more that happened before as she and her dh have lovingly moved Heaven and Earth for that man, but they are not able to continue running down there all the time--it was exhausting. He couldn't see that until she sat with him while taking him to a Dr. appt. and laid it out in simple terms by comparing their situation with similar to when HIS f-i-l needed care. He finally got it and agreed to a place much closer to them. He is not unhappy and likes it quite well. Of course, he'll always miss his home.

I wish my parents were home, they've done the Vancouver to Alaska cruise three times. (they're on a cruise right now: Ft Lauderdale, through the Carribean, through the Panama canal, up the west coast back to Vancouver).

The first time they went, it was the July 1st week. Royal Carribean had a huge party for Canada Day. Three days later, they had another huge party for the 4th of July.

Layer, layer, layer. My sis has kids who live there and she said I had better take a coat. My tour guide said she didn't and her guests don't. She said to layer, coats are to bulky. On my trip I was comfortable everywhere I went except on a bus tour of Denali on top of a mountain, but we didn't stay long. Have a good trip, it is one of the places I would like to go back to. I flew to the top of Mt McKinley on a 6 passenger Piper plane. It was very clear. We had a good view of the Mt. top and a climber's camp.

First time I went, we flew into Vancouver and got to experience Canada Day. As well as Fourth of July during cruise.

Here's pic of me meeting Karla, a KT'er, in Anchorage, for lunch. We just finished eating reindeer hot dogs.

You can see short sleeves.

Never experience cold temps, except at Glacier Bay, and I had a nice raincoat which was suffice.

Denali, remember sitting out on patio at lodge, evening without a jacket.

Friend did Mt McKinley and thoroughly enjoyed the plane trip.

Only experienced mosquitoes once, in Denali, and I did have repellant.

Never felt the need to layer. July was nice weather, at least when we went.

Thanks everyone...very good advice not to forget the binoculars! Duh. I am sure I would have - Glad to hear Glenda that it was nice weather in Denali. Repellant will be in my bag for sure...we leave just a day after you...Holland America's Statendam. Is that a joke re "if they want to go"???? Vala maybe a fleece is warm enuf for top of a mountain? Know I'm bringing rain jacket as it poured on my last trip & I needed it on board watching the icebergs for sure...Thank you all again...

I plan to gift my DS and GS with the trip on Sunday, when they come for Easter lunch.

Gifting a cruise to Alaska...I'd vote for Glenda as KT'ers "Greatest Grandma"! On second thought - greatest Grandma period. Thanks for all suggestions - nice photo. Big hello to Ruthie G in Tx. Will be taking yellow fleece-lined rain jacket even if folks do look at me funny 'cause it says "Gloucester's Yankee Whale Watch". No designer labels for me I guess.
