Should I try making prime rib?

One of our patient's husband is the manager of the meat department at our local grocery store. He told us they will be having prime rib roasts on sale next week for $5.99 per pound.

I am thinking of taking advantage of this deal and making a prime rib for Christmas Day. Here lies my dilemna: I have never made a prime rib before. Actually, I don't order prime rib when we eat out, either because it is served much rarer than I like.

I know the guys will all love it, and if I could prepare it so it was more medium than rare I would probably like it.

Should I give it a whirl? Can it be a little more cooked than what I have ever seen? If so I will need some hand-holding and guidance on how to season, prepare, etc. Can it be prepped ahead and then roasted later on or even the next day?

I am also watching the horseradish sauce thread in case I need that info too!
