WOW! I often go to Syracuse Wegmans, but the Rochester pictures tell me that that store is even bigger than the ones in Syracuse. I am only 30 minutes from the Auburn, NY Wegmans, so I usually go there. It is considerably smaller than anything in Syracuse. I don't want to live in the city, but the Wegmans in the most populated areas really are extremely well stocked. However, I prefer my mom and pop market out here in farm country for meat. They still cut and wrap all their own meat and nothing is in a shrink wrap that is hard to see clearly. Also, I can get small portions, which I need. I do appreciate the Wegmans bakeries and even the Auburn store has its own bakery.

Beautiful displays. Wegman's was rated the top grocery chain in the USA by Consumer Reports in May 2009. (Trader Joe's was second.) They scorest highest on service, perishables and cleanliness and good on price. Too bad Wegman's is only on the east coast.

DH and I accidentally stumbled onto a Wegmans several years ago when we were traveling from Dallas to Tanglewood, MA. It was in Pennsylvania, I think, and I've forgotten which town, but we were tired, needed a pit stop and some food, so we stopped at this grocery store in the town we were passing through. I was astonished! I couldn't believe my eyes! I had never seen a store like it. I was wishing I could pick it up and bring it home with me.

Now we have Central Market, which is a lot like Wegmans but not as enjoyable to shop at. Central Market's design is claustrophobic, too closed in and maze like. The Wegmans we found was open like a normal grocery store, but had sooo much more.

Wegmans has also ranked in the top five of Fortune Magazine's Best Places to Work for years. One of our daughters worked there during high school and they do deserve those ratings.

The store about five miles from my house appears to have a similar layout to the one you visited.

So tell us, Jim, what did you buy?

The pictures are beautiful. There's a Wegman's about 12 miles from me but I have never gone. I really don't like huge stores with sooo much food. It's overwhelming when you aren't shopping for a big family.

I'll get there one of these days.

Ded, its worth the trip just to browse, its really fun! We have a Wegman's that is next door to a Homegoods, doesn't get any better than that :)

Wegman's was my favourite grocery store when I lived in Dunkirk New York. My favourite location was the one just off of Sheridan/Niagara Falls Blvd, near the Boulevard Mall.

I was half way between Buffalo and Erie PA so I shopped the Wegmans in both of those locations. Another that I hit on an almost weekly schedule was in Jamestown, NY.

There are five Wegmans stores within 30 minutes of where I used to live in Rochester. Wegmans has the local market well covered.

One Wegmans was a five minute walk from my house.

Within a year I think. Do you know where? Metro West near my daughter's town if I'm not mistaken.

I was in town for a few days. A couple of times I went there for prepared foods, which is one of the highlights of Wegmans. Did you notice the signs in the cases saying "$6 meal" ? You get a nice entree and two sides for what you would spend at Macdonalds. They also have buffets of various ethnic foods. You don't even need to leave the store to eat your purchase at the Pittsford store. There is a dining room.

I didn't know we were both once WNYers. I grew up a few miles east of Jamestown.

Wegmans have been innovators, with a good influence on the business. The two supermarkets in the small town I now live in have both rebuilt their stores along the lines of a Wegmans, although on a somewhat smaller scale.

Closest Wegman's isn't really "on the way" for most of my shopping... but stop in even if remotely ini the area.

When it first opened, a few years ago, they sent out flyers to EVERYBODY. I went on opening day. Had to park in another STATE almost... parking lot was JAMMED. Grabbed a cart, inched my way into store... ditched the cart and just wandered the aisles.

Went back a few days later (mid-week) and it was much less crowded. Found the aisles of "regular" groceries to be well priced, with lots of good bargains. Wish they always had cheese samples like they did when first opened... would probably buy types I've never tried before. Meat/poultry/fish... significantly higher than regular supermarket. Saw MASSIVE shrimp... put your thumb and fore finger together and that's how big around they were... THREE/FOUR to the POUND!! $24.99 a lb! Their deli meats/cheeses are always great.

OMG! What a fabulous store ! I will definitely keep my eye out for a Wegmans on our next road trip.

Are they regional?

They are in Western and Central NY, Eastern PA, Northern NJ, Northern VA and MD.

Oh yeah-- I have a love/hate relationship with our Wegmans in Auburn--One of my GDs has worked there for years-- still does parttime in addition to being a Special Needs float in the elementary schools-- & a GS-in-law has worked there for years-- they have a neat employee package. And I love their Artisian breads, their cheese--deli-- olive bars-- it's the one place I can usually find decent lamb-- an bananas are always low priced-- best selection of teas & alot of low salt or no added salt products & the only place within miles that I can get a decent Biali.
Now the hate part-- I cannot walk into that place without spending WAY more than I should-- it's not my fault-- really-- they tempt me on purpose.

LOL, craftym! They are clever schemers for sure, to overcome your best judgement with all those tasty temptations!

What state is your Wegman's in? Mine in NJ also has a Homegoods next door! We always bring out-of-state guests in to visit...they leave drooling!

It reminds me a lot of Central Market and Whole Foods in Houston. Looks like a fun place to shop. We are getting a Whole Foods in my neighborhood so I'm going to have lots of good places to shop. Thanks for sharing your pictures. Makes me want to go shopping... again!

Ooh, Wegmans at Pittsford Plaza is my idea of heaven. Never seen anything finer in the US. You are lucky to live nearby!

Wow, that's a lot of produce. What I really have my eye on though is that mini orchid.

What a fabulous store, I wish they'd come west!

I have Wegman's envy! Not because we don't have them but because we don't have one like the Pittsford store. The stores are quite different depending on the area. The one closest to me is in a less than upscale community so doesn't have those wonderful looking bulk potatoes or such a large selection of cheese. It's still much better than the alternatives.

Wegmans is building a store in Westwood, MA. at a huge new shopping complex called Westwood Station at rte 128.

Looks like our Publix here in FL. I love stores that make your eyes water they are so beautiful!

My only complaint about my local Wegmans is that the price of the salad bar--also has just a few hot items--is $7.49 per pound. When I shop in Maine on the coast I have found their supermarkets with very nice salad bars are much less expensive. As I recall when I went there in late September, the price was less than $6 a pound. I can eat really well in Maine between their lobster pounds and salad bars.
