How many pet towels does a sane person need?

I've always kept a supply of old towels to dry off the dogs when they come in on a rainy or snowy day, plus a couple of old quilts to use when they ride in the car. For quite some time now I've been keeping them in an alcove downstairs, which is now being cleaned out for other use.

I took all my towels and quilts out, and found they made quite a stack. I live in an old house with very few closets (two small ones upstairs, none downstairs) and no built-ins, so I've got to cut this down to manageable size. I suppose that means two towels and one quilt, but I'm finding it hard to let go of the rest. It wouldn't be so bad if I could store the rest somewhere else...but I don't even know where I'm going to put what I keep.

How much of this stuff do you all have...and where do you store it?

We have two dogs. We have a blanket in each car and maybe 1 -2 towels in each car also. We will use the blankets for covering things up or wrapping things up to make sure they don't bump the car also.

Alot of the really old and nasty towels end up outside in the garage and my husband will use them for cleaning the car or doing repair work. then they make their way to the garbage if they are too stained or ripped.

I would have to say, that for each dog I like to have two towels. One to set him on and one to dry him off with.

there are so many things to use old towels for!

Our boys love to arrange towels on their beds and use them as a pillow also!

I have a similar problem with very little space to store things be they mine or my animals. I bought some of those platic, zippered storage bags (the ones you vaccuum the air out of so that they are then totally flat) and stack them under my bed. If you don't have room under your bed, they can also be stored on any shelf. Just a thought :)

It looks like I'm going to be the first one to own up to letting my pets ruin my financial future. I don't know why other people do it, but I do it because I love & adore my pets & I don't love money. I also choose to have monthly donations to "doctors without borders" & "greenpeace" deducted from my bank account, because I also love other people of all nationalities, & the planet, & I don't love money. I have a very reasonable annual income, but I drive a second hand car, wear mostly second hand or chain store clothing, & have mostly second hand furniture. I don't have organized holidays away from home, don't drink, gamble, smoke or go out to entertainment activites. Why? Because I love the things I can do with my money if I don't waste it on meaningless crap. My three teenagers DO love meaningless crap in the forms of surf label clothing, going out, i-pods, laptops, & mind blowing expensive sneakers. (o.k., I do use the macintosh laptop a fair bit) And I fund all this silliness because I love & adore my kids & it seems to give them a lot of meaningful pleasure. No, I'm not some dried up old lesbian or an old maid who wouldn't know how to have a good time if I won ten billion dollars. In my 20's I earned & spent a lot of money & lived the "champagne & caviar" materialistic lifestyle. Yes, it can be fun. But for me, it was hollow. I'm happily married to a man who also values the simple things in life. Canoeing on a remote river at sunset, throwing a stick on a lonely beach for our nine dogs, riding through the bush at sunrise, these are the things that make my life worthwhile. Things that don't cost money, because the more you consume, the less you live. Our nine dogs provide more than friendship & company for me. They are my THERAPY every single day. They're my mates, & I willingly undertake the challenge to love them as much as they love me. It's a big challenge, because they would die for me without a second thought. Am I serious? Yes. Am I mad? Probably. But you only get as much love as you give in this world, & I make a point of loving everything that I can. The dogs are by far the easiest & the reciprocity is a joy.

I also use paper towels in the kitchen. I have dishtowels that get used while cooking occasionally, and dishrags, that I use to wash dishes. But if I am washing my hands, or cleaning up the counter, or cleaning up after handling meat, etc, I use paper towels. Some judge it as environmentally unfriendly. But these are my personal thoughts: 1) Laundry also consumes resources (water, energy), and outputs wastewater into the system that must be handled. 2) I use choose-a-size paper towels, and I find that often, a half-sheet does the job. 3) It's healthier when cleaning up after handling meat. A lot of people use paper guest towels in their company bathrooms. That's something I have not really gotten into yet. But it is an idea to mull over. :-) This has been a VERY interesting topic!

Olychick, thank you for the link to the waterproof cotton mattress pad! I have a waterproof liner that I purchased from Sleepy's several years ago when I bought my new mattress. It drives me crazy because it doesn't fit well and bunches up. I must be a direct descendent of the Princess and the Pea because just the tiniest wrinkle fells like a rock ledge to me. I have six sheet sets mostly from trying to find that perfect set. I like a crisp feel and it is almost impossible to find. I will soon be buying linen sheets in hope that they will be crisp enough for me. I just gave my DD one of my sheet sets because she needed extra. I suppose I have a mild case of towel hoarding. I have four sets for myself, two sets for DH, 4 towels for my pupsters. I have a monogramed set for each of my DGS for when they spend the night with us. We also have numerous older towels that we use for miscellaneous tasks.

I "scrolled" by eveyone's answers! I ONLY use my bath towel ONCE and it hits the laundry basket. I know I am clean when I get out of the shower; STILL I don't want to use a "USED" towel the next time! It is the VIRGO in me! I go through a lot of towels weekly; when my boys were at home it was worse, because they are are like me..my DH however could care less if he has a "clean towel"..I just don't get it! How do you know which end you wiped your bum on....I sure son't want that "end" on my face!!!

Well, Susan.. don't tell anyone, but my pet towels and family towels are all the same! But then again, I've been known to use my cooking pots for mop water. :)

I do wash stuff though!

I usually end up using my towels on the dogs too. Now I buy only black towels.

Our city pound put out a plea for old towels. Donate a few for the ones that have just had surgery.

I don't have a problem with storage space for their towels. My problem is floor space due to 8 large dog beds and 2 crates. Sigh.

I suggest you donate them to either your local humane or rescue group - they are ALWAYS looking for towels. Even your vet might want them...

I like the idea of bagging or boxing them up an storing them under a bed. Those old towels come in so handy for lots of reasons, not just the dogs. But you don't need more than 5 or 6, probably. Could you carry the quilts in the trunk of your car, or in the garage?

I know what it's like not to have enough storage space.

Maybe you could use those bags I have seen on tv where you suck the air out with a vacuum and reduces the size to fit under a bed??? I have 3 dogs and when it is really raining, I have one (beach towel size) on the floor and at least 2 or 3 during the day, then at the middle of the day when those are soaked and the house stinks, I put them into the washer and get out another 2 or three. Very labor intensive but with 3 wet dogs the smell can get a little overwhelming. Also, donating them is a great idea if you are sure you won't use them in the future.

3 per Husky for drying x number of Huskies

2 for the bathroom floor for Bath Day.

2 for each crate to exchange while cleaning

1 in front of each outside door

4 others scattered around for sleeping mats that can be laundered.

Lesse ... that comes to ... 28 towels, minimum. [grin]

One of those plastic garbage cans you get at any store- Like for outside use. Remove the lid. Have a plywood circle cut to overlap the top, drape a cloth over it to use as a bedside table, or any where you need a table!

You can fill the can with a LOT of stuff, it's out of sight but easy to get to---and FUNtional
