Just replace the sink 'trim' or do I need a new valve?

I sure hope this isn't a really dumb question....

I am looking at changing the 15-year old and outdated Moen trim (Chateau) on my bathroom sinks and roman tub.

I spoke with the Moen folks, and was told that in order to update the trim on the tub, the valve will have to be replaced with the M-Pact vavle.

(NOT GOOD NEWS BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE PIPES UNDER THE CULTURED MARBLE TUB -BUT I DIGRESS..)

The sinks, however, I was told I could change the trim no problem.

My husband started to quiz me last night on if this statement is true.

Can I just change the sink faucet trim w/o replacing the valve? Seems too easy...

How is it that I have to change the Roman tub vavle but not the sinks?

ADVICE???
