Graduation Gift - How Much $$$$ is acceptable?

I hope Caitlin will have a job that can afford to send the amount of money she expects to everyone who sends her a graduation invite/announcement. Many would have to forego a mortgage payment if they sent a minimum of $100+ to all the graduates of friends and family, It's a gift not an obligation or entitlement. When I graduated, I never expected any gift. My parents threw a party to celebrate, it was just a reason to get together and have party. I was happy with cards, flowers, words of wisdom, I didn't expect anything and any monetary amount was greatly appreciated and thanked for personally with thank you notes. I don't care if it's a phone call. Email, text, in person, or card. Just acknowledge the giver - they are under no obligation to get you anything.

I have my own story about food stamps going back to the early 70's. I don't know when the program started, but it sure was handled differently back then. I was newly divorced with two small kids and had just started a job at the minimum wage of $2 an hr. I'd been a SAHM mom during my marriage and sure wasn't prepared for this dramatic change. I was so scared and worried about feeding us and I did qualify for food stamps which were in paper form. At the scheduled time, I had to go to our Main Post Office and pay cash for the stamps I could afford. Only once did I have enough cash to buy my full amount; the rest was kept and no longer available to me. Gosh, I didn't like shopping with those darn things. I was only able to buy these stamps 2 or 3 times before I realized I could shop better on my own with my own little budget. FYI: Sadly, at that time, I only received $100 a month in child support for my 10 yr. old DD and my infant son. It took that amount to pay for child care for the baby so I could work. I wouldn't wish that kind of life for anyone. :( I just can't imagine people would prefer living that way, but I know it happens.

When I first got an e-mail account I wanted my name to be part of a rose, since I'm a major rose nut. The only rosy word I could find was petaloid, which is a partially formed petal often found in the center of a rose bloom. I used the same name here on GW. Minnie, a rose hybridizer has a secretary named Gladys and he named a rose variety he bred after her, "Happy Butt" -- you should get one! It's a beautiful (but chilly) day here in Washington---the sun is finally out! I'm going to spend a little time online (maybe shopping...heh heh), do some gardening, and go out to dinner with my husband tonight. And try not to think about how old I am. :-)

My day can only get better. I had a 9 a.m. appointment at the Wound Care Center but they were running way behind so after waiting well over an hour I left. I used valet parking at the hospital and got myself a latte while I waited for them to retrieve my car. I finished my latte and still no car so I had to remind them again. Ran into a volunteer I know and she suggested I get a sandwich there to take home for lunch but I was 15 min too early for them to start lunch so I just came home. I am refinancing my house and the appraiser will be here between noon and two. My day will get better because a guy friend in CA is sending bling for my birthday.
