Cat won't eat

I'm sorry if I missed a post about this, but I did browse through a few other similar posts before making this post.

So I just recently brought home a stray kitten. Probably 6-7 months old. I've been feeding it and the rest of the litter since they were old enough to eat solid foods. I just recently started feeding them tuna, and two of them were trusting enough to eat from my hands and even let me pet them. I decided to bring one of them home, so I grabbed it up and put it in a pet carrier and brought it home.

Since I've brought it home, however, it refuses to eat, drink, or do just about anything. As far as I'm aware, it hasn't even urinated or had a bowel movement in the last 48 hours (the time it's been since I've brought it home). It just huddles up in any corner its given and sits there. Despite being a feral cat, it doesn't try to run or escape people when it's being held.

I realize part of the issue is that the cat is freaked out, and I'm likely going to be taking it to the vet sometime in the next 2-3 days, depending on when I can get an appointment, but does anyone have any advice for the time between now and then? I'm really worried about her.

Anything helps, from advice on getting her to eat and drink, to getting her used to using a litter box, to getting her to open up a bit.

She needs to see a vet today. If you call and describe what is going on, they should work you in. If not, try another vet. Kitty needs to be seen right away.

Do you have a humane society or feral cat program in your area you could call about how to go about socializing a feral or semi-feral kitten - some cats and their circumstances are such that they've bonded more to other cats than to people and yours may be like that even though seeming friendly. They could give you some idea if the stress of being separated from the others could account for what you're seeing and how you might address that - can you make her some sort of nest or hidey hole out of a box that she can feel safe in? Even people oriented cats can take weeks to make a transition.

Although that said, no matter what the cause, not eating/drinking for 48 hours is serious and does need to be addressed asap.

Plants my cat *loves:* * Dracaena marginata. Maybe because it looks like pet grass? Got it because I thought it might be tall enough to be out of her reach, but she'll stand on the planter and nibble on it! * Peace lilies. She'll nibble on whole leaves! She's eaten so much of it in the 6 months or so that I've had it, it's now smaller than when I bought it :( Plants she hasn't touched yet: * Pachira Aquatica (I've had it for a few weeks/month now). I got a taller version (waist/stomach height), but some of its leaves are still low enough that she can reach, especially with her planter-standing method. However, so far I haven't seen any nibbles! Fingers crossed that she doesn't grow accustomed to its scent or something of the sort and becomes more curious! * Snake plant. I didn't realize this plant was toxic for cats, but thankfully it's always been housed in areas she can't frequent -- in a hard-to-reach spot of a kitchen counter/island (I had it surrounded by cookbooks and my coffee maker) or its current spot at the top of a bookshelf. They don't require loads of light, so it's easier to position these plants somewhere you can enjoy, but your cat can't. * Succulents. I've kept a couple in window sills year-round and she hasn't touched them. Although I don't recommend keeping succulents indoors unless you have super bright Southern sunlight or grow lights. I had an Echeveria Green Goddess that is etiolated slightly from my mostly Southern, slightly Eastern window. I think I'll stick with sedums/Graptopetalum Paraguayense (which I think still look attractive with their sliiiiight legginess) for indoors year-round.

he nibbled just a tiny bit ( you can barely see the little missing pieces on the edges of leaf) and now he is just sitting on the leaf. he looks skinny, and weak, like his skin looks all baggy and wrinkly. but he did molt successfully, because I saw his old skin and head capsule. So strange, he was fine before the molt, and now it seems like he doesn't "like" orange leaves anymore and is looking for something else. I truly think something is wrong with his mouthparts, since he appears to at least try to nibble, then it is like he gets frustrated and starts pacing around again, his behavior is almost exactly like that of cats that are looking for a place to pupate. and he is about 3 weeks old, i think, the other two hatchlings from his "group" died when they were like two of three days old, one hardly ate at all, the other was eating normally and when I went to change his leaf and picked it up, he rolled off, i waited a while to see if he startedmoving again, but he died on the leaf. I guess it is survival of the fittest so to speak, even when they are indoors. I used to keep them separated according to size, but i decided to keep all of the cats in their own individual containers after I had one cat die when trying to molt, I am almost positive that the cat he shared a container with, ate the leaf he was attached to and knocked him off before he molted, even though he had his own new leaf, because he was fine when i checked them before i went to bed that night, and when i woke up he was lying on the floor of container trapped in his old skin, and the other cat was on the leaf eating it, they had shared a container since they hatched, but apparently this particular cat didn't like to share, he is one of the few I have that still "stinks" me when I change his leaf and clean his container, he is super aggressive, most of them seem to be used to me and don't get defensive when I clean and give new leaves, but this one almost EVERY time, sticks his little horns out at me, I dread fooling with his container because i cannot stand that smell, lol. I lost one more cat due to an unsuccessful molt, it was a first instar, not sure what happened but he was all tangled up in his old skin. But the first one I lost due to molting was on his 3rd molt, and completely healthy, so the only thing I could think of that may have happened was that the other cat forced him off of the leaf, but idk, I felt so sorry for him, all that work and time, and he had made it through the more delicate stages and survived. Hopefully this one will perk up, I thought about putting him outside on the tree, it is nice and sunny today, and letting him wander around to see if he finds a leaf that suits him, I have some tulle fabric I can tie around the tree to keep predators from getting him, does that sound like a good idea? thanks everyone!!

I just read the thread... I can't tell you how sorry I am for you, and your cat, much too young to die this way! You must be emotionally and physically drained, and you will always wonder why he passed away so fast... Not knowing the "why(s)", and erasing the last 2 weeks of suffering are always the hardest to deal with. Wish I had an answer for you. What everyone else said - this is serious, cats not eating for extended periods are at risk of fatty liver, a life threatening situation, so please keep him going on some food, whatever you can get into him - meat babyfood is good, seems to appeal to cats who are nauseous.. . Not sure what you mean by "big" cat - if you mean overweight, then diabetes comes to mind. Now, diabetic cats typically consume tons of water and flood the literbox - did you ever notice that happening? However when ketoacidosis, a complication of diabetes, kicks in a cat can become extremely nauseous and lethargic & go off food and water. Can you at least get a simple exam & bloodwork that could rule out some of the more obvious things (such as diabetes)? A good vet should understand about income limitations and offer you some options. Wishing you and your kitty well

When I moved to a new house my well-socialized but very shy 8 year old cat took literally months to decide to leave her closet and towel behind and become fully acclimated. It will take a lot of time but the cat will come around on its own time. Meanwhile, I'd take it to the vet and get it thoroughly checked out. Perhaps just continue to feed it what you'd been feeding it before, slowly moving to a wholesome brand of cat food.

Will you be trying to catch the others? They will do better together.

I have successfully integrated two completely feral cats and a number of semi-ferals into my family. The single most critical thing to provide these felines is a sense of safety. For a feral or semi-feral, hiding=safety. You need to give this kitten a room with a bed or other large furniture and perhaps a closet in or under which to hide. You then need to place food and water bowls wherever the kitten chooses to hide - under the bed, in the closet, etc. You also need to place a litterbox in the same area, but not right next to the food and water bowls. The litterbox also needs to be placed out of sight of the rest of the household so that the kitten will feel hidden and safe while using it.

If you have any other pets in the household, the kitten should be given a separate room where other animals can not go until the kitten is acclimated. This may take days, weeks, or months. It is helpful to replace the solid door to the kitten's room with either a screen door or a ladder of baby gates filling the doorway. This allows the kitten visual access outside of the room so that (s)he can become acquainted with the sights, sounds, and goings-on in the rest of the house from the safety of his/her own room.

Our 11-year old cat had not eaten for 4 days, or had anything to drink. I took him to the Vet and they could not find any obvious problems. They offered to do blood work to check for diabetes and various feline diseases, but we declined, considering his age. The Vet noted that he had lost about 20% of his body weight & prescribed Mirtazapine, which is an appetite stimulant. I literally shoved the pill (quarter 15 mg tablet) into the back of my cat's mouth and squirted water in to try to hydrate him. But, considering his age, I thought he was a goner. On day 5, I started force-feeding him. I took a turkey baster and cut the tip to open it up a little bit. I took canned cat food and mixed it with water to thin it, then filled the baster with the mixture. I held him in my arms, then proceeded to squirt the food down his mouth. Good thing I did this in the shower, because it makes a huge mess. After a day or two of this, he started eating again on his own. That was two months ago and he has gained weight back and is fine now. Even though this was an old post, I wanted to put my comments in, in case it might help someone else in the future.
