If you can sew your own curtains the options will be endless. I would make pannels for the door and window. Make them about 1 inch from the floor, so they will be pleasing to the eye.

I see that the window is not level with the door, you will need to make the door pannels a bit longer to equal those out.

Hang the rods at the same height.

As for the style and material. I would stay AWAY from tab top curtains.

I would do a wood/bamboo blind on the windows and faux suede curtains in a carmel color.

I too had verticals on my sliders/patio door for almost 12 years and just this year finally went for a change.

I did love the way I could control the light/sun especially the glare while watching television but like you, I couldn't stand mine anymore.

After months of reading this forum (and what GrayWritingDog has said) I learned the best solution for me/my family was to have a long rod, extra bracket for support in the middle, decorative finials and NON-tab top curtain panels.

I put the curtain panels on clip rigs and it is so, so easy to slide them back and forth then it's time to block the sun's glare on the TV.

I have the same type sliders as you and another window in the same room that looks to be the same size as yours.

As GrayWritingDog posted above, I hung the rods at the same height for both windows---above the wood window trim.

Because the second window was shorter than the slider I just matched that window's hem length with the slider.
Making all the panels the same hem length, gave the room a more uniform look.

Oceanna requested better photos. I couldn't make anything out in your photos as they were too dark so I tried lightening them up a bit for you.

I have a similar set-up in my kitchen, except that I have a second window on the other side of the slider. Wanting a clean look, but also wanting the option to manage the light, I finally settled on what you see below:

One long rod (it's actually 2 connected rods, which I got at Linens & Things), with supports at the ends and the middle, and finials. The panels have extra large grommets, so they hang beautifully and also slide easily. (They are from Pottery Barn, and come in both sheers and solids). I like that the look is clean and light, but you can give it more heft (and more sun-blocking power) by choosing a different fabric.

Gray - I agree about no tab tops, seems like thats an invitation to a nightmare. You think it would look ok to have blinds on the windows but not the door? Love your suggestion of Carmel - without seeing my whole room, I must tell you that carmel would look really good in here.

Oceanna - I have looked at the JC Penney online site. I can get bogged down looking at inspiration pics, because I like so many of them. That's why in the end, I love to ask for opinions from all of you. So much talent in one place!

Amity - did you make your draperies? Have you posted a pic on this forum? I am toying with the idea of sewing these myself, but am scared to try it; thats a lot of fabric to screw up! These will need to be lined, also. Do you think that a lined faux suede will be too heavy for clip on rings?

Callaloo - thanks for the visual. I have thought about grommets also. I did wonder if they would hang up, especially if I do lined faux suede. As you can tell - I have zero experience in the window treatment department.

One of my concerns is that the width of the windows and the door are not equal. Do you think it will be a non-issue in the end? Would I make both panels equal to the greater width of the windows to make them "appear" to be the same width? Am I totally in over my head and should I just call out the experts? I hate to pay for labor on anything I can do myself!

Oh, and what kind of top pleat is considered the most casual?

Hi Rogue Valley from a fellow Southern Oregonian. If you want to order something from Penneys you should go into the store and talk to Laurie there. She has worked in the window covering dept. there for about 10 years and if there are any deals to be had she can help you, plus she will know what hardware, etc. would work for you. I recently wanted to get my mother new window treatments. When I went in to order them we found out that the color I wanted had been discontinued. Laurie worked with me and was able to find everything I needed - and at a huge discount because they were on clearance. And when you order through the store there is usually no shipping charge.

Thanks Terriks - it's great to get a tip like this, since you know the valley. I did talk to one girl in person at our Penneys a couple of months ago when I started thinking draperies. It wasn't Laurie though. This gal said I would need a custom order and gave me an unbelievable quote that turned out to be a huge misquote, so I kind of got scared off (figured if they can't give me a price correctly - what were the chances of getting draperies done correctly?) I will try again and specifically ask for Laurie.
Do you have an opinion on grommet vs. ring clips, as far as holding up to daily use (opening and closing on a daily basis)?

I think that the ring clips would be better for drapes that will actually be opened and closed regularly. I think that the grommet top drapes are really made for stationary side panel treatments.

The clip rings would be the way to go, because you use that door.

Yes, personally I would put blinds on the window and leave the door with just curtains. It would be a pain to have blinds over the door. and since you had those hanging blind over your door before a change will be nice.

The door will look fine and leave you with that view into the back yard.

BTW, love the dog! He looks a little pee-ed off that he's outside looking in.

LOL Gray - yeah we love our dog too, I am laughing really hard after reading your post cause she is blind as a bat! Her eyesight wasn't great this fall, but over the winter she lost it all. It is sad but, she does some pretty funny stuff these days. I can't help but laugh when she stands in the corner of the room and just stares. Good thing she has lived in this house for so long, because as long as she is on our property, she does fairly well. She took a fall into the pool a couple of weeks ago though, which surprised me cause the backyard is her domain.

So back to the draperies, can those clip rings handle the weight of a lined faux suede?

If you buy a good quality clip they will be able to handle it no problem. If the curtains are going to be lined you may need to use more clips, maybe 4 more per pannel. I've noticed that some brands clips are smooth and some with grooves in the clips. The ones with grooves are going to be stronger. I wonder do they make a clip with non-slip coating on the insides of the clips?
