Is it fabulous? What can I use to showcase it....besides the $75 of beef filet I bought?

It was a gift!

Looking at RR's bottle tree, loving it and thinking that perhaps it's all in the artistic talent and eye of the maker.....and of course placement and lack of resin gnomes and frogs that make is pretty. When he retired, my uncle started "making things" He had seen a wind chime made from various cut off bottles, with a hole drilled and carefully arranged so they all didn't clang together at once. So he took to glomming on to every empty bottle he could find, cutting it and stringing it up and giving it away. His next project was wind chimes made from forks and spoons strung on a bent coat hanger. They clanked in a breeze. Then there was another man who took up rug hooking when he retired. He bought kits and tied knots like mad. Their house was covered with furry rugs, hanging on benches, on the back of the sofa, on floors and piled in a corner. Another person took up needle point and in 5 or 6 years all available space was covered with needle point renditions of someone else's art. We had Pinky, Blue Boy, The Mona Lisa and even Van Gogh's sunflowers. A beautiful home was turned into a display of kitsch....but it kept them off the streets! LOL! I have seen some very lovely "art" made from broken pottery....but I have also seen some stuff that is pretty much broken dishes glued to something. The line between art and craft is fine.....and the line between craft and junk perhaps even finer....and some don't seem to see it. As an example, I made a trip to New York several years ago to see Christo's Gates. I found it moving, exilerating and endlessly fascinating. I posted on another forum what I had done and how wonderful I thought it was.....and was booed and hooted at ridiculed for bothering to view something quite as silly as that. Art doesn't need the approval of others to be "art". Van Gogh died penniless with a stash of things like whirling suns and swirling clouds and flowers beneath his bed. Pollock also died broke. Frieda Kahlo's work never sold until after her death when Madonna started collecting. I have seen several gardens that were full of "repurposed" items, the toilet planter, the shoe planter, the frog under the hosta and the elf sitting on a rock. Some were lovely and charming, while a few others were a collection of junk. What makes the difference? I guess it's the skill of the person putting it all together. Scuse the ramble, I guess it always boils down to "To each his own" or "chacon a son gout", but I never understand why someone feels the need to defend their own taste, or feel insulted if someone else doesn't like what you like. Why would anyone feel threatened because I don't like plastic gnomes in my yard, nor Robert Kincade (however he spells his name) on my walls nor canned soup in my casseroles? It's your house, do what you like. Linda C

mjconti I confess that I also like W2W carpet, I have fond memories growing up with it in the 70s (shag!!). Not necessarily in every room (growing up we had carpet in the bathroom and that was gross). In our place we have hardwood everywhere but carpet in the bedrooms. Not shag. Low pile, high quality wool. The master even has a fun pattern. The master is huge and I don't think we'd have been able to find an area rug to fit. We are a shoe-free house and we run the Roomba every other day. That said I'm going to defend gray: our place is decorated in sophisticated shades of warm and cool grays and beiges, with navy and chocolate brown and accent colors including soft yellow, green, orange, and white walls. We stained the yellow oak floors a medium grey that has blue/green undertones and is very pretty. For us the decision was easy: we'd lived with beiges/warm colors/golds for so many years in the 80s/90s. Then switched to a "riot of colors" -- bold rich jewel tones, red sofa, etc. That was fun for awhile, but we were tired of it!!! Maybe we were ahead of the trends? We were ready to go back to quiet neutrals, but not the beige/orange/gold/yellow oak again. What's more, the sunlight our new place gets just doesn't work with too many warm colors --- which is how it was decorated when we bought it--- the place ends up looking like it's literally on fire! Toning it down with a grey palette works, and does not look cold at all.

I use broccoli in scrambled eggs sometimes. This morning I had asparagus in scrambled eggs. In omelets I usually use sweet red and orange/yellow peppers, onion, mushrooms. Have never used cabbage in either, but I've used it in chicken-fried rice and that's really good. Today for lunch I had a fat cauliflower steak browned in bacon with a big squirt of fresh lemon on the plate. Mmmmm! I love cabbage just sauteed in real butter with salt and pepper. Maybe a little vinegar. I have a recipe that I got at The Brick Haus in the Amana colonies for sauerkraut salad that I enjoy, but I cut the sugar back by half. Oh, if you've never been to the Amana colonies near What Cheer, IA, you should go. Go for the huge flea mkt in What Cheer and then go to The Brick Haus in Amana for lunch. BE HUNGRY. I see online that those places / events are all still there, but it's been ages since we went. Sometimes I will use Sevin dust, I had to, last summer, or I would've lost my squash. It put up a good fight but then so did I, out there diligently every morning, killing off adult squash bugs and scraping those little round red eggs off the leaves, laid so carefully in neat rows, seemed almost a shame they were so pretty. But right into a container of water they went, and after I was finished, all the water was flushed into the septic tank. Like you, I don't like to endanger the bees and butterflies. Or myself, actually. I have used BT before. I don't really like to use anything like that if I don't have to but seems like I have to use something or I don't get a crop at all. Japanese beetles move in about July and late August, it's the grasshoppers. My garden just can't catch a break. I've been doing everything I can to attract the beneficial insects, including the predatory ones, and am seeing progress. My parents did a lot of questionable stuff, like you say your grandparents do with Sevin. Mom thought hybrids were the best thing since sliced bread and never saved the seed of anything except for some little "squash" someone gave her seed for (might've been luffa, picked young, it made star-shaped pieces when sliced. She made a lot of stir-fry with those in it), and that's only because she didn't know exactly what it was or where she could order more seed for it. Everything else, bought new every year after studying the Burpee catalog for several days on end. She spread a lot of Sevin around and some other things, too. She didn't like butterflies, said they were "worms with wings" and also birds were "rats with wings". But you had to know my mother to see how classic those attitudes were for her. ; }

@l pinkmountain, I feel you! Your rock mulch and plastic! My property is similar, 1/3 acre of mature trees and the bare ground covered with layers of rock and plastic since 1962. The prior owner (the only other owner besides me) dealt with weeds growing in the rocks by dumping MORE rocks. As I'm removing it, slowly, I'm discovering original flagstone stepping stones covered up by 6 inches of rock, and the flagstone itself is in the original rock, which was just gravel and would have been so much better to deal with than the heavier river stones. The prior owner loved roses, and grew them by digging many very deep holes for big plastic buckets that stuck out of the ground a bit. I am trying to remove them, it is not the look I want, but they just break off in bits so I think I'm going to have to dig up the whole area to get them out. The property was an estate sale so it came "as is" and most of the roses had been dead for awhile but the buckets remain. It's all so much work! At the moment, where I want to put a rose, I scrape away the rocks and make a raised bed, the bottom, in contact with the native soil, lined with wood chips. Right now I'm using what I have. I just today made a raised bed for a miniature rose (Bees Knees) with logs from a tree I removed. Eventually I will replace the logs with nice larger desert rocks. I am planting many native perennials and cactus and yuccas, these do go into the native soil, and I buy small plants so I don't have to injure the extensive tree roots with a big hole. My goal is a desert cottage garden, where there is little need for mulch because native plants cover and shade the ground. And I'm finding I can use some of the rocks as paths. I also just remove the rock and plastic little by little, and any place I do, I mulch heavily with wood chips that I keep damp. This starts to improve the dead soil almost immediately! I do have a lot of pots, although this year I transitioned some of them to a raised bed (new retaining wall). My "secret sauce" to pots is to use the root pouch bags. Sometimes just alone but most of the time, I put the bag inside a pot as a liner. Sometimes if the pot is deep I cut out the bottom of the root pouch bag. I buy them from Greenhousemegastore. The roses don't ever get root bound and their roots stay an even temperature. I had a Julie Child rose in a pot for 4 years, which I just transplanted to the retaining wall, and the root system was amazing, and transplanted incredible easy without breaking a single root, because of how the plant grows in the bag. What I love about the bags is that it also can give you a temporary raised bed! Even just sitting on your rock mulch. But If you scrape away a bag-size area of the rock and plastic, put some organic matter on the soil, and then a bag, with the bottom cut out or intact, depending on your goals, you will already be nurturing soil life with the watering and nutrients that you provide the rose. You can disguise the bag with stacked rocks if you have them, or if you're like me and want something temporary and cheap, just cut bamboo fencing to the right height and cover it. I'm sure there's lots of ways to disguise it. But it will let you easily, temporarily, or somewhat permanently, enjoy a rose even while your property floor is so imperfect per your aesthetic and dreams.. If not roses now, then when?! :D

I'm assuming it's the very pale white-pink rather than the darker rose-colored or reddish Himalayan, yes?

Very high in copper and iron. If it were summer, I'd say fresh sliced tomatoes. (Have had it, it was a wonderful pairing.) A simple fish or shrimp dish would be my second choice. It'll be fine with the beef, though. If you use a lot, though, the high mineral content can lend strange aftertastes to the accompanying wine. I found it made a dry wine "puchery".

Thanks Renee....that's what I wanted to know...it sort of looks like a block of rose quartz..I grated a little into my hand and put my tongue to it...very nice.
Now sure how to "do" it...just keep the block in a baggy and grate what you want? Put it on a plate with a grater and pass it? Grate some and put it into a special shaker??
What's the protocole?

ROFL Linda you forgot who made that photo request - AnnT is a salt monster (NOT the one from Star Trek).

Momj47, that would be a great swap gift for Ann's next swap parter, the poor lucky soul.

Linda, it's being marketed to foodies as a finishing salt (although people who have a lot of access to it cook with it, too). Knowing your love of china and fine things, I'm betting you have some pretty salt cellars that would show off the salt and your collection. A lot of people use clear grinders to show it off, but I've found most don't grind finely enough or are made of plastic and look odd on a formal table.

I wouldn't pass it as a block only because it could create a situation where someone feel uncomfortable trying to figure out how to handle it...or not handle it. :) (besides, all those hands touching it...ewww...even if you do know and love them! LOL!)

Store away from moisture, naturally, but I'm sure you already figured that out. :) I'm not sure what the humidty is like were you are. If I were in KY, a baggy would be death due to condensation. Here, it's so dry that I'd go with a paper bag or baggy.

Oh, an as for what to use it on? I forgot to mention that it's pretty on just a simple salad of mixed greens with some pommegranate seeds.

I've got some Hawaiian pink and some black salt (now that is odd looking stuff!), but I hear the Himalayan flavor really puts the Hawaiian to shame. Enjoy!

I almost bought some for myself, when I was shopping for work gifts. 1. I was shopping for others not me :( . and 2 I was afraid that I wouldnt know what to do with it. I kept thinking, its just salt. LOL I guess I just don't know much about salt. It was beautiful though what a shade of pink.

Well....I guess I'll boil up some pasta....and pass my block of salt and a grater....and a chunk of parmigano reggiano...and a grater....and a grinder of tellicherry black peppercorns and maybe a couple of bowls of minced basil and minces oregano and another of chopped parsley....and call it season your own dinner!
It really is beautiful....
beanthere_dunthat

Or you could go all the way, put a hot plate in the middle fo the table and let them cook their own pasta! LOL!

The really heavily mineralized blocks are deep, deep rose colored. Not good for food use, but make great bath salts and are carved into gorgeous (and really expensive) salt lamps. They allegedly emit negative ions to purify the air, etc. Not saying they do or they don't, but they are pretty. :)

CC? Problem?

Linda, that is a gorgeous looking piece of salt. Display it for sure, with a small grater so people can enjoy it and talk about it.

I guess I need a salt pedestal....wonder would a footed stand for a candle do?...And how about the very utilitarian grater? Do they make one with a silver handle to match my flatware??? LOL! Now I best search through my "assorted odd dishes" pike and find something.
