Is it fabulous? What can I use to showcase it....besides the $75 of beef filet I bought?

If I were to purchase a large panel of the blue styrofoam (or pink)- would it be possible for me to cut several "bricks" from one piece making a multi-brick mold from only one piece of styrofoam? (as opposed to cutting the styrofoam into smaller sections and using them to create the brick molds individually) I am invisioning.. a sheet of plywood set up in our garage with a sheet of thick plastic covering it, then setting the styrofoam panel on top, lining the exposed cuts with something (tape as mentioned above?) and the spreading my hypertufa mixture in all the various holes. I am guessing there would be 2-3 inches between each specific hole allowing adaquate support to prevent a breakthrough. I am hoping I could then mass produce the hypertufa bricks. Any thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? If this won't work any suggestions for mass producing bricks with minimal effort? Thanks, bluejean in ohio

Duane, I too can't wait for fresh tomatoes with some salt. That is my absolute favorite as well. I bought my sister a gift box of salt from the Himalayan salt site. Not only were the varied salts wonderful (the block of pink salt particularly), but the packaging was lovely as well. Sherrmann - that is really interesting. It must be some weird taste thing, but it sounds like his body has found a way to compensate. I can understand being sensitive to fructose, the sugar in fruits (does he eat other sweet things?), but the vegetable thing is weird. Do they take suplements? Getting your vit and min through whole foods is the best bet, but it sounds like for them supplements might be a good idea. We also have deer wandering through the property, but they've stayed farther away since we got the dumb mutt. They're clearly not afraid of her, since they just look at her when she barks, but they do keep a respectful distance now. AM

Let's exhume this thread. I live in Spokane, Washington, zone 6, and the nurseries where I have worked since 2004 have been selling Jury magnolias, starting with 'Black Tulip', then 'Felix', and most recently 'Burgundy Star'. One thing I have noticed about these precocious magnolias is that once they break dormancy, they might as well be tropical. We would bring them in from zone 8 Oregon in bud/bloom, and they would get nailed by a moderate frost. For that reason, we started bringing them in in late summer to overwinter here, and the trees would then come out of dormancy later (only now starting to swell) and bloom later. We have cold nights compared to our days, sometimes 30 degrees cooler at night, and that seems to help hold things back. We INSIST that people who buy these trees site them where they will never see the morning sun and will be protected from wind (especially 'Felix'). I have refused to sell them when I have doubts about the buyer's location. I only know of two times when we have had to credit a customer for a loss, and only one of those was winter damage. The other was because someone forgot to tell the buyer not to mess with the roots much. I think that people who live in climates where winters are relatively mild but have occasional, poorly timed freezes will have a harder time with this group then those of us who have a more consistently cool to cold winter climate where dormancy is prolonged. On a side note, I have a recording of an episode of 'The Victory Garden' dating back to the late 80's (I think) with Peter Seabrook in Dunedin, New Zealand. He's visiting the garden of Nora Dunlop, who shows him her Pieris formosa var. forrestii 'Wakehurst' (zone 7) which was covered with fiery red new growth. He lamented his failures with this plant; the new growth emerging and invariably being burned by frost. That happens in his zone 8/9 garden in England!

Thank you all for the valuable feedback on this topic! Sorry I have been MIA. Long story short, after the OP, I went back to the dealer who had this tile at a steal of a price (they were 2nds) and he was sold out of this color. So, I haven't done anything yet. Admittedly, I hadn't really put much thought into this bath and was choosing this tile because it was a "great deal" - probably not the best strategy. That being said, I do think it's a beautiful tile and certainly an option if my tile guy gets more in this color. Since it's not available at the moment and it's a small bath (so I'm not *that* price sensitive), I'm considering other options. I haven't decided which direction to go on the tile and just how much of the walls to cover. I've put so much thought into materials for the kitchen recently that I'm having a hard time choosing a direction for the bath. Thank you all for posting your opinions and photos - it's very helpful. I do like the Zen look that can be achieved by using the same large format tile throughout. I want something simple and soothing. Grannysmith - I too thought the tile was strictly gray, but when I got it into the bathroom, it does have a distinctive green tint. First I was looking at a sample of one of the 2nds, but then I got a 1st quality sample from the Florida Tile store and it too tends slightly towards green in the bathroom. Maybe not quite as much as the 2nd though. I think the key is to get a few sample tiles and put them in your space. My bathroom has no natural light. The green in it was much more noticeable in the bathroom than in natural daylight. Unfortunately, I gave the sample of the 2nd back, so I can't compare them directly to each other. I think the green tint is actually nice, but I understand if it's not what you are going for. Please let us know what you decide to do. For those interested in this tile, I'm posting some photos I took of come of the different colors - Sand Castle, Marine Fog and Sea Salt. There is also a display of the Sand Castle from the FT store. For me personally, the stock photos online can be so far off what they look like in person, so hopefully this is helpful to someone. I tried all these colors in my bathroom and the only one that remotely worked for me was the Sea Salt. I'll take pictures of bread, squirrels, dogs....but SALT???
Maybe I better go grate some into my hand....
Now that $75 beef roast......that ought to be worth a picture!!

I'm assuming it's the very pale white-pink rather than the darker rose-colored or reddish Himalayan, yes?

Very high in copper and iron. If it were summer, I'd say fresh sliced tomatoes. (Have had it, it was a wonderful pairing.) A simple fish or shrimp dish would be my second choice. It'll be fine with the beef, though. If you use a lot, though, the high mineral content can lend strange aftertastes to the accompanying wine. I found it made a dry wine "puchery".

Thanks Renee....that's what I wanted to know...it sort of looks like a block of rose quartz..I grated a little into my hand and put my tongue to it...very nice.
Now sure how to "do" it...just keep the block in a baggy and grate what you want? Put it on a plate with a grater and pass it? Grate some and put it into a special shaker??
What's the protocole?

Linda, it's being marketed to foodies as a finishing salt (although people who have a lot of access to it cook with it, too). Knowing your love of china and fine things, I'm betting you have some pretty salt cellars that would show off the salt and your collection. A lot of people use clear grinders to show it off, but I've found most don't grind finely enough or are made of plastic and look odd on a formal table.

I wouldn't pass it as a block only because it could create a situation where someone feel uncomfortable trying to figure out how to handle it...or not handle it. :) (besides, all those hands touching it...ewww...even if you do know and love them! LOL!)

Store away from moisture, naturally, but I'm sure you already figured that out. :) I'm not sure what the humidty is like were you are. If I were in KY, a baggy would be death due to condensation. Here, it's so dry that I'd go with a paper bag or baggy.

Oh, an as for what to use it on? I forgot to mention that it's pretty on just a simple salad of mixed greens with some pommegranate seeds.

I've got some Hawaiian pink and some black salt (now that is odd looking stuff!), but I hear the Himalayan flavor really puts the Hawaiian to shame. Enjoy!

I almost bought some for myself, when I was shopping for work gifts. 1. I was shopping for others not me :( . and 2 I was afraid that I wouldnt know what to do with it. I kept thinking, its just salt. LOL I guess I just don't know much about salt. It was beautiful though what a shade of pink.

Well....I guess I'll boil up some pasta....and pass my block of salt and a grater....and a chunk of parmigano reggiano...and a grater....and a grinder of tellicherry black peppercorns and maybe a couple of bowls of minced basil and minces oregano and another of chopped parsley....and call it season your own dinner!

Or you could go all the way, put a hot plate in the middle fo the table and let them cook their own pasta! LOL!

The really heavily mineralized blocks are deep, deep rose colored. Not good for food use, but make great bath salts and are carved into gorgeous (and really expensive) salt lamps. They allegedly emit negative ions to purify the air, etc. Not saying they do or they don't, but they are pretty. :)

I guess I need a salt pedestal....wonder would a footed stand for a candle do?...And how about the very utilitarian grater? Do they make one with a silver handle to match my flatware??? LOL! Now I best search through my "assorted odd dishes" pike and find something.
