things to make your life easier - what do you think
Comments (12)bldsgal - good point about our mothers. Mine was slim and trim and up until I was in 7th grade she used a wringer washing machine and had no dryer!! And of course she never has a dishwasher and she worked like crazy in a very large garden. Flyleft - you are surely right that many labor saving devices help people remain independent as they become older. But do you think that is really a significant reason companies make these products? I think it's because human nature is to find an easier way to do things and they're intended for the masses of "young" able bodied people flocking to purchase these things as our country generally becomes more and more sedentary. For example BIL has a lake cabin next door to ours. We don't have big yards. He bought a whoppin' big yard tractor to mow "our" lawns. He's not old and he's physically able to walk around and mow a small yard. We declined having the rider mow ours - easy enough to walk it (and easier to get around the trees). Meanwhile he laments being overweight and out of shape.........See MoreStupid design things--what were they thinking?
Comments (32)Human size cut out posters (standing upright) doing all sorts of activities or lined down a hall. They bother me for some reason. And is it just here.....but when did walking on the right to shop at malls (akin to driving) become a norm? Tis' a standard here. Haven't shopped at a mall for years and people sure know how to tell you where they want you to be. For some reason I do right side cart in grocery stores, from osmosis or all those electric carts. TPMs....has anyone notice they look like someone's "bare" rear end? Who designs these things? New car and the thing won't go off. What good does this do? Mechanic told me this happens with some cars and it is a law now to have them. Lazy mechanics are my stupid design things...animate or inanimate. Although the design logo is the same, MINI has had this for years and can be turned off manually when tires are changed, adjusted, etc. I can do it if they can't, an odd routine. But again, a lazy mechanic is going to avoid it and spend the time talking about how it is fine. They must have changed the build from original design, or we are getting junk ones. Perhaps there is a way for the user to manually turn it off....and off to search. This isn't a design thing. I cringe when looking for something in a store, then asking the clerk for information and they answer "I don't know". Can't count the times I've wanted to tell them to find someone who does know or to learn something and find out. Every color possible on appliances, no need to put any holiday lights in the kitchen. Just turn the lights out and everything else on. Same with your car at night. Dazzling!...See MoreTell me your prediction for the next big kitchen style trend??
Comments (37)I would think during a recession, people focus on saving money. Say not eating out to save money. Making the kitchen more important than ever. Buying things in quanity when they go on sale. So storage space or pantry's would be a high priority. Children are living at home longer and multiple generations are living together now. You may need 3 or 4 microwaves to accomodate ALL those people. Dinning rooms, breakfast bars, dens and livingrooms may become obsolete. A kitchen with a BIG eating area doubling as a livingroom would be the new trend. Recycling as the worlds population grows may become more than "the right thing to do". Maybe it would be a law, to sort your trash before it could be picked up? So multiple trash bins, say 5 or 6 might be incorporated as a "new" trend? OR....maybe they will develop a trash zapper. It would zap the trash like on star trek into another dimension.....:0) We would all need one of those!!! lol...See MoreWhat do you think of this next to my stairs?
Comments (27)The wood floor in front of the stairs is the part that's only 36". That's why I don't want newels in front of the bottom step, wanted them to sides (on bullnose step) originally, now given I can't do that with these steps I want them *on* the bottom step, coming straight down from where the ones attached to the wall are. I have 43" of wall on the side of the stairs and it's about 6ft deep though I don't want to put anything deeper than an 18" deep bench there. A bench would really be more useful than a table for us. I keep checking CL and thrift stores, so far I haven't even found a cheap twin headboard, small dresser, or even an nice (small) old door I can make into a bench.
