Ceiling fans for lower ceilings?

We would like to put in ceiling fans in 4 bedrooms of our new house - all of which have standard 8 ft ceilings.

We would like a low profile fan that doesn't come too low into the room. I think having a light on it would be nice, but we will be installing 4 new high hats in each room as well so not sure if it's 100% necessary to have the additional light?

We don't want to spend a fortune, but want them to look nice.

Is it safe to buy a nice looking low profile fan on ebay? We haven't had a lot of ceiling fans so I'm not sure of the difference in noise, performance, etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations or a good source for good value ceiling fans??

I would not put a light in them if you are putting in recessed cans.

I have used this one, (without the light) in a number of projects as the fan in an 8-ft room. I like it because it is pretty unobtrusive.

I wouldn't bother with a light either with cans.

We have 8' ceilings. All bedroom fans use the standard down rod. Have a hugger/low profile in dh's office. Because the blades are closer to the ceiling they don't seem to move the air as effectively as the other fans that use the standard down rod.

A standard rod, from what I've read, is 3-5". I think I'll go with a low profile fan since I want one with a light fixture (the schoolhouse style one). It will end up partially over the bed (it's the center of the room and where the box is). I don't like fans myself, but I know a lot of other people do. We have central AC, so it won't get used much. Not sure I see the logic here. Using a moving fan to keep the heat down also makes you feel cooler because of the moving air over your skin. Have you considered installing electric baseboard heat, or having the registers re-done?

we are pretty set (99%) are getting the fans. however, getting them wired if we weren't to get them is a great idea! jennybc: the 2 rooms are going to be guest/computer style rooms. we have no kids and don't plan on having any. if we do, it will be just one. the upstairs calls for 8 foot ceilings with a vaulted ceiling in every bedroom. we are doing an angled tray in the master and still unsure about the other 2 bedrooms...either vault or leave at 8'. edit: also, we were thinking....in the great room with those 3 or 4 windows, what if you do those windows as a casement style? would that work? we're trying to get the same look of the fixed window in the rear of the house. i don't know much about casement windows and how much more they would be compared to double-hungs. the window is about 3x6/7 and then another square window above it (not sure how big that one is right now, maybe 3x2). i'm not sure if the casements are even made in that size. Agree with oasisowner. You can have all the range venting in the world and that doesn't help if it's hot and humid in the kitchen. And that's even with A/C. You'd be surprised how many kitchens don't have vents where you'd want them, Jan. But I would want to know what "extremely low" means. If it's, say, 7 feet, I think you're out of luck for a ceiling fan.

Does it matter how many blades a fan has? It seems they have between 3 and 5, does one type work better than another?

Palimpsest - I prefer the wood ones - that site has some really good low profile ones, just a bit on the pricey side. Great for ideas though - I'll keep looking!

Yeah, the hugger style mounts aren't very effective at all--much better to use the shortest down rod.

One thing I would consider very carefully if you are planning cans and a fan is to be very sure that the fan blades won't be moving in the light beams from the cans. That kind of strobing effect can be incredibly annoying.

Good point. I don't think that will be an issue, but I will make sure it doesn't happen!
