Ceiling fan, lower ceiling

I am going to put a ceiling fan in our guest bedroom, which is about 15x17 with a 8'3" (99") ceiling. According to a chart I saw online, I can use the standard rod. Will that make it hang too low? Do I need one of the "hugger" fans? What do you think? How low do your fans hang?

What is the length of a standard rod?

Use the short stem, find one that will run in both directions, and avoid putting it over the bed if possible. Some people find the constant downward movement of air directly above them to be uncomfortable.

I am 5'11" and my DH is 6'1". We both feel very uncomfortable when we are in rooms with 8' ceilings with standard rod ceiling fans--feel like we have to duck all the time and we aren't even that tall. I really recommend that you put in the ceiling hugger fan too.

Here's an example of what I mean by not looking generic! http://www.casablancafanco.com/product/period_decor/marrakesh/marrakesh_89073m_hi.html This is the casablanca marrakesh fan. In sTandard configuration it's listed as 14" from ceiling to the lowest part of the fan. I've seen low profile kits (shorter installation poles) advertised, I wonder if this might work if I could get a fan like this to mount closer to the ceiling. BTW, I know I'll lose some effectiveness, but now I have have no fan, so it can't be any worse!

Yeah, the hugger style mounts aren't very effective at all--much better to use the shortest down rod. One thing I would consider very carefully if you are planning cans and a fan is to be very sure that the fan blades won't be moving in the light beams from the cans. That kind of strobing effect can be incredibly annoying.

Just move your plate heigth up a foot or so. You could cut through the roof to install a 2x12 beam on top of the plate. This will put the facia higher than the existing facia. Or you could move the beams in & give yourself a bigger overhang on the porch so the facia meets. Dropping the floor a step is always an option as you mentioned. Al

Not sure I see the logic here. Using a moving fan to keep the heat down also makes you feel cooler because of the moving air over your skin. Have you considered installing electric baseboard heat, or having the registers re-done?

our ceilings are 8' and every room has a fan. no rods at all, they just mount right up.

as to putting it directly over the bed, here in teh deep south you WANT them over the bed to help move air. in other areas of the country you do not. so that really is a personal/regional preference. heck, some areas you better NOT even put in fan in teh house if you wish to sell it!

A standard rod, from what I've read, is 3-5". I think I'll go with a low profile fan since I want one with a light fixture (the schoolhouse style one). It will end up partially over the bed (it's the center of the room and where the box is). I don't like fans myself, but I know a lot of other people do. We have central AC, so it won't get used much. Thanks for the input everyone.

Ummm... here in western PA, we also want them over the bed to help move air... I mean, that's the point of them, right?

NOT just a Southern thing!
