Bradford White vs GE 40 Gal Electric Hot Water Heater

I've read that unlike gas hot water heaters, there isn't that much of a difference in quality and manufacturing (inner parts and components) in electric hot water heaters. I've narrowed down my selection in 40 Gallon Electric Units to Bradford White and the GE (apparently made by Rheem) with a 12 year warranty sold at Home Depot. When getting quotes for the complete job (parts and labor) there seemed to be about a $100 difference in price between the two units. Which unit would you choose to be installed on the second floor of an apartment in a closet next to the pantry?

All though there are some very high end exceptions, as a rule there really isn't a hill of beans difference between electric water heaters.

Basically they have a steel pressure vessel which is usually line with a baked on powder coat ceramic finish which is advertised as "glass lined"

Surround that they have an insulation blanket. Some have a fiberglass blanket but most today have a rigid foam insulation material.

That is all encapsulated in a thin sheet metal sheel.

They nearly all have 4500watt 240v electric heating elements that are made by a third party supplier and with some rare exception, the heating elements are interchangable between brands of water heaters.

They have an upper thermostat which switches between the upper heating element and the lower element and it also has a built in overload control (reset button).

The lower thermostat only turns the element on or off.

In fact, you can buy a universal rebuild kit at Home Depot which has both heating elements and both T/stats for $31.27.

They may or may not come with a T&P valve. If you need a T&P valve it is a universal part made by Watts Corp. that fits into a 3/4" port in the top of the tank.

Some also come with the dielectric nipples packed with the water heater.

Many of them are actually made on the same production line and they don't get a manufactures name until they reach the final labeling and packaging dept.

I think you need a 75 gallon model or, if your water supply isn't too hard, a tankless heater. With a 2.5 gpm shower head mixed at 2/3rds hot and 1/3 cold, a 50 gallon tank gives you 30 minutes of showering. At that point, you have 50 gallons of (at best) lukewarm water in the tank. You'd probably need to wait 30 minutes from that point until the water in the tank is again hot. If two are showering at once and no other hot water is being used, it'll start getting cool after about 10 minutes. If you're using a lot of hot water, there isn't going to be that much difference in operating expenses between the two sizes, you're going to be burning BTUs to heat water either way. You can easily cover the cost difference with the savings you'd have by replacing your old washer with a front loader.

look into the new "Condensing" Gas Water heaters. They have efficiencies well into the 90% range and claim they put out as much water as a conventional 75 Gallon water heater. AO Smith is probably the best known one , but more new ones are coming. I heard they qualify for different Govt + Gas Co incentives/rebates. We will need a new water heater soon, to replace an old conventional 50 gallon gas water heater that uses a pilot. Since our gas bill is usually less than $13 in the summer, and I'm 68 years old, I will probably buy another conventional gas water heater--we don't use that much hot water and the price of the condensings are around $500 more ($1600) v/s probably around $1000 for a good quality conventional one. Were I younger and used more hot water or had a higher gas bill, I would certainly go with the Condensing one, and it's still not "Written in stone", that I won't! HTH's Gary

The repair man came out and discovered that the earthquake sensor in our gas meter had turned off all gas to our house - and we did not even have an earthquake! Thanks for the link to the manual, Jake - I'll keep that on file. If we every do have an earthquake, we will have to go through all of this again. It appears also that our gas meter is very old, and so I am going to contact the gas company about replacing it so that this will not happen on its own again. I was unaware that the gas meter had an earthquake sensor - I thought we had to turn off the gas to the house manually after an earthquake, as we were always told to have the tools to do this and to know where the shutoff valve is, which we do. Anyway, we could never have relighted the pilot without gas! Normally I do a lot of cooking and would have discovered that we were without gas when I tried to cook, but we barbecued last week-end and have been reheating leftovers in the microwave - plus I have been making salads. It's been to hot to want to cook or eat anything too hot. We're not sure what tripped the sensor, but I'm afraid that it might go off on its own again, as it appears to be trigger-happy. Thanks for everyone's help! I hope that next time we will not have to call a repair man, although we might need help turning the gas back on from the meter. Here's some additional info on our water heater: The Bradford White URG250T6N is an eco-friendly gas water heater with ultra-low nitrous oxide emissions. It features intelligent diagnostics through an LED screen that give you 10 different indicators of how your water heater is functioning. Source It could be that the ultra-low nitrous oxide emission feature might be what makes it more expensive, and this may be required by the state of California.

Since this is being covered by my home warranty I can't change the size. I am currently the only one using the unit but that will increase to 2 people but no more than that. I take really long showers and have been ok with hot water so far. I've heard that Bradford White is a good brand but haven't really heard anything about the State brand. I searched online and most ppl say BW is better. I just want to make sure I'm not getting cheated especially since it is a warranty call. Say they install the State and it fails in 5 years and I have to pay out of pocket to replace it all over again vs paying a little more now for the BW and it lasting 10 years. I plan to be in this place long term. Again, I don't know how much more the BW will be. The dispatcher said it wasn't an option since the diameters are 20-22" and wouldn't leave enough space between the wall. I called BW and they only have 1 30 gallon model and its 20" compared to the State they're going to use that is 19". After I hear back from you guys I'll ask the plumber for the State model number so I can look up the yellow tag and get info on the energy usage. I've already called them about 20 times to get this approved/resolved. What do you think?

The hot water heater I will be replacing is 18 years old but has only had about 3 years of actual use. People are suggesting that I replace it as a preventative measure. The next hot water heater I buy will receive 2.5 months of use per year. I've noticed that the GE hot water heater at Home Depot with a 6 year warranty is about $100 less than the unit with a 12 year warranty. Is there a big difference in quality between the 6 and 12 year warranty units?

Unless you turn off and drain the heater when it is not in use it is still subject to corrosion.

The GE water heater is made by Rheem. Made in Montgomery Al. If you get the GE, get the 12 yr. The parts are of better quality. i.e. brass pitcock instead of plastic. If you want the best, go with an A.O. Smith. JMO
