New Way to Cook Turkey

It was just focused on our new program of a new stand-alone roaster. Infra-red cooking that will cook your bird 8 minutes per pound. Stuff the bird and place it vertically in the roaster.

Looks like the same size as a deep-fryer, called The Big Easy

They cooked a turkey and did a taste test and got flying colours.

I find it interesting that they bill themseleves as an oil-less deep fryer. Below are reviews that are all in one place online, several websites, not from Charbroil (the makers).

I have to laugh in reading their information.

I think it will probably cook a turkey alright, but I don't think it will do a better job than many other normal cooking methods. It has nothing to do with frying a turkey, which is a different recipe altogether.

There is no such thing as "infrared" technology. Your regular oven, toaster, roaster all cook with infrared. Nothing is new there.

It is very wrong to say that infrared ray penetrates. It does not. Infrared stops when it hits a surface. X-ray penetrates, and microwave penetrates.

Forget it, 8-10 minutes per pound is questionable. Sounds good , but works out not that much better than the normal way. 16 lb comes to 160 minutes, that is more than 2 1/2 hours.

The Big Easy is big just to cook a 16 lb-turkey, and then it is not "Easy" there is that big LP tank to go with it.

I don't see any safety interlock/consideration. If you turn on the gas and don't light it up quickly, as you know, LP gas mixed with air and ignited can make a spectacular explosion.

Cheaper? 21,622 btu per pound of propane, you have about 11 lbs in a tank, the Big Easy burns at 16,000 BTU. Imagine cooking a big turkey in a Big Easy, if it uses up you big tank of gas half way cooking, you will be in big trouble.

I like "zucchini glop"...my own recipe and my family's name for it! Fry pan which will hold enough for those you will be feeding. Swirl a little EVOO in the bottom Add some thinly sliced onion and some skinny slices of peppers...red...green...yellow...doesn't matter. Salt and pepper lightly and add a bit of chopped fresh garlic and some fresh herbs...any or all of oregano, basil, parsley, thyme, marjoram, savory and perhaps rosemary....don't add too much just a couple of tablespoons at the most....save some to put on top. Then add as much sliced zucchini as you need to use up, salt and pepper.....and cover all with sliced tomatoes, the rest of the herbs and cover and continue to cook ....when the juices begin to run, remove the lid and continue cooking until it's cooked as you like... Top generously with grated parmesan cheese and serve. Remember....if you cook this long enough it will cook down a lot and you can make a very large zucchini cook down enough to make a side dish for 2 or 3! Sometimes I add mushrooms.....sometimes carrots.....sometimes a bit of raw rice to soak up the juice, sometime cous cous or acini de pepe....but I like it best just cooked until no longer watery. Kaelkriver, I think that the way you are warming up your turkey is probably the way that most people do it when they roast the day before. But for me turkey (all meats actually) taste best when they are roasted and served the same day and aren't reheated. As much as I love leftover turkey for hot or cold sandwiches, it does taste like leftovers to me and not quite the same as just roasted. Have you tried getting everything else ready first and roasting your turkey breasts last? They can sit for an hour, kept warm by covering well with foil and topping with something like a heavy towel to keep the heat in, while you finish preparing your mashed potatoes and other sides. I get the vegetables all cleaned and ready to cook early in the day, and most vegetables don't take long to cook at the last minute. Even your dressing can be baked earlier in the day if you want or put into the oven after the turkey comes out. And gravy can be made while the vegetables are cooking and the turkey is roasting. Quick question about alternative turkey cooking method

I decided I couldn't wait any longer, so I just ordered the 18 qt Nesco with the 2 day prime shipping. My son will cook the turkey Wed. using the make ahead directions previously suggested. Then on Thursday we will bring the cooked (and at least partially sliced) turkey to my sister's house with the Nesco so it can be plugged in/warmed up there. Hopefully I get lots of other uses out of it - have no idea where I will store it - will have to be the attic or garage!

I'd be careful about putting cloth or parchment over the turkey in this oven as it uses the broiler to sear. After would be ok. My choice would be cooking parchment. Chinchette, you shouldn't need to tent it while in the oven -- in theory at least. The breast skin can get very dark and crisp but there's stuffing under there and it gets nice and crackly. When it comes out, I let it rest so it's easier to slice and stays hot. I'd put some cooking parchment over and and a couple of dishtowels on that to hold in the heat. Also, forgot to mention. Before I bought the oven I had a long talk with the Miele consumer people who emphasized that when you open this oven it loses 30% of the heat. I see people open an oven, baste leisurely, then wonder why the turkey takes so long. Big bonus to no-basting.
