Ode to a wooden spoon

How can anyone write so much about a simple wooden spoon? But Kenji found a new love, and the article is fun. I think this item is on my wish list!

Here is a link that might be useful: The best wooden spoon

Did you know that, if you put a wooden spoon across the top of a boiling pot of pasta, the water will not overflow?

'Tis true!

Tibbrix I've tried that with pasta and mashed potatoes, but they still boil over.

I finally fixed my problems by buying a silicone Boil-over lid. I love it! And bought one for a friend for Christmas

How come you are saying to not eat much of Sorrel? It only causes problems in people who already have kidney disease but I have never heard of anyone who was not sick before eating sorrel and got kidney stones because they ate any amount of this plant! ( And I work in medical research!) Since we are talking about French sorrel, and since I grew up there, let me tell you how French are eating French Sorrel: Like spinach and most of the time WITH spinach ( or soups, or fish) My grandmother was buying a bunch of Sorrel with 2 bunch of spinach at the farmers market right here: http://www.albi-tourisme.fr/us/stay/shopping/markets.html After rinsing spinach and sorrel, she would briefly throw them in a pot with 3 tablespoons of water to soften them a little bit, she would add whipping cream, salt, pepper and nutmeg ( do not forget this one) and would let the mix simmer for a few minutes. When we were nice, she would add 2 tablespoons of chicken gravy ( dry) mix them with the cream. She would then top the plate with breadcrumbs and put the plate for a few min under the broiler. IF we were extra extra nice, before the crumbs, she would put a few slices of goat cheese on top of the spinach/sorrel/cream mix, let the cheese melt for a minute ( without stirring) and she would top it with breadcrumbs and place the plate a few min under the broiler... This last one is to die for. As for Sorrel and fish recipe... This one also is yummy!

When we speak of 'food grade mineral oil', I am presuming it is the kind one gets in the drug store? I use that on my soapstone but since it can be ingested as a laxative, I'd say this is it? Not that I ever bought mineral oil anywhere else. Ann, I too had never heard of spalted maple. It makes me think of birds' eye maple. (Is the latter ever used for furniture anymore? or has it all gone? I had a birds eye maple high chair for my sons, and wish I still had it.) I know how you love wood so that must be a welcome addition to your collection. I am hoping to get some solid good wooden spoons in Spain. Not to hijack but anyone have any suggestions re olive wood? what to look for?

I just looked in again and I'll say " again ", I didn't expect all of this. It's nice to be recognized, for your efforts. This is really basic, the tip of the Iceberg. I've entered a World Competition, 2 times( not with, Forks or Spoons ) Didn't win any Blue Ribbons there but I was in the running!!! Terri: You , You , Do you want to get me in trouble, with all my Girfriends . I'd be making Spoons for 10 years. Hey , wait! Michael is in there too. Sorry Mike! used to talking to womem in here. Wish there were more guys in the FF. Sol: You said it a long time ago. I don't forget ! Didn't know you were Italian? That's right you speak a lot of languages. And, Wowww! will you cut that out, People will talk. Be back later when my head shrinks and my hat fits again. Thanks , LOU

I still mourn the loss of this one my mother gave me 30 yrs ago. it was a risotto that killed it. I still have its partner but we find it is not an everyday grab. holes and forkish shapes do not clean easily so the go-to is still the bamboo ones especially the rice paddles. Now DH really wants this bamboo one...we have a SurLaT nearby so I'll pick one up. it does seen to have the perfect shape. (he wants a go-to workhorse) and not a fancy one for fear of breaking. He is hesitant to touch the new ones. I didn't pull them all out but the chubby one is from a Maine woodworker from a recent road trip. The Ikea ones are starting to split. MIL gave me her rolling pin (love) And her 50's era walnut salad servers. We use the bamboo with the red handle most often. and the rice paddles. (in the dishwasher at the moment)

Ikea had a hard synthetic spoon not unlike that wooden spoon, which I bought several of, and I love. It's great for scraping across the bottom of pots of spaghetti sauce, or jam etc so it doesn't catch. My biggest regret is not buying more as they don't carry them any more :-(

as a kid I found the wooden spoon to be a pain... I had to buy a new one, when mom broke hers on me.

But the plastic one was worse, it hurt more, and never broke... so, us kids made it disappear.

Still don't like, but do use wooden spoons while cooking.

LOL Moni! Not PC these days, but my mom used a big wooden shoehorn on us. Broke it on my brother! Thankfully they quit making them like that.

I love wooden spoons, nothing works quite like them for me. I do like the spoon shaped spatulas though! Kenji is such a great good writer!

I have used wooden spoons to prevent boil overs....and my wooden spoons have the burn marks to prove it! After one actually started smoking, I quit doing it.

Jasdip, I like that!

Moni, ((hugs)) as I know from previous posts that your childhood was less than ideal.

Wooden spoons are at most estate sales. I love using them, but I'm down to just one. My other one, (ahem, cheeks turning red), caught on fire when I accidentally laid it in the spoon rest with the handle pointing into the fire. Oops. Alas, it wasn't salvageable.

I do have a wooden spatula I like.

$25 is a little steep for a wooden spoon, me thinks.
