Felt here this am. I'm in IN. and felt it 5.4

actually i heard it more then felt it. I had an 8 cup glass measuring cup with water in it out on counter and it was vibrating and water was sloshing. Weird

It was felt here in Illinois also. I heard it started in southern Illinois. I was sitting in a chair and the whole chair was shaking. I have balance problems and boy was that something to go through.

Felt it here in Indianapolis. DH had left already, but Jacob(3) was awake in my bed. He woke me up wondering what was going on. I wondered if the cat was under the bed making a mess of something or if it was the garage door, but it went on too long. Then I saw neighbors' flood lights going on, and I knew it was an earthquake because other people felt it. Jacob has a new fascination with dinosaurs, and DH JUST YESTERDAY explained earthquakes to him. Jacob was worried about our sidewalks cracking, but this wasn't anything that damaging. Darned thing did wake up the baby though - at 5:30am or so.

I live in Maine, so no earth quakes, but I checked out the Quake Wax that Sea Lavender mentioned, and the first (very thorough) review on this page mentions the Quakehold Putty, Museum Putty, Quakehold Gel and Museum Wax. Wax, https://www.amazon.com/Quakehold-66111-Museum-Ounce-Clear/dp/B000FJU29U?th=1 5.0 out of 5 starsContrasting the company's different products I'm combining reviews of the three related products from the same company, because being able to contrast the pro and cons (and intended use) of each, would have helped me when I bought them. First off, Museum Putty and Quakehold Putty are the same thing. It say so in the leaflet that come with it. They have two different names just to market to different users. They also make Quakehold Gel, and Museum Wax. Gel requires a sealed surface, and says not to use on wood. It is clear, and if you need to anchor a clear vase to a glass shelf, this is your product. I found it is also the most difficult to work with, so take that into account. It has a very slow motion ooze to it (like very, very thick honey), and I simply could not get it to stick to a crystal vase (to apply it directly to the vase) - I had to apply it to the shelf, and put the vase on it. Once I gave it time to "set" (and cleaned up the extra that oozed out), it did hold the vase well, and is virtually invisible. Wax is what you want for anchoring something to a wooden surface. It's a soft white color (translucent in a thin layer) that isn't obtrusive under most items. It's not hard like candle wax, it's soft, and feels like it's been liquefied and whipped (incorporating air), then allowed to cool. I have no idea how they make it, I'm just talking about what it feels like. It's relatively easy to work with for the first few items, but if you are doing a lot, it gets somewhat annoying. Traces of wax stick to your fingers, and clings to the wax you are trying to attach to your item. Wipe(scrub) your fingers on paper towels in between, but eventually you'll need to wash your hands in water as hot as you can stand. It does come off. Putty is the easiest to work with. To me, it's something between cream and ivory colored, also unobtrusive under most items. Also needs a sealed surface. Though they say you can use it on finished wood, they also caution that it may lift the finish. Why risk it? Use the Museum Wax - people have been waxing wood for many centuries... I have used it on painted wood however, and it hasn't seemed to do any harm to that. I bought all of these about three months ago, and used them on the appropriate surfaces. I could live without the Gel (just don't need in in my circumstances) - I only found one place for it, but it's held well. On the other hand, the Wax and the Putty are two things I wish I'd found years ago! I have a litter of teenage cats that practically bounce off the walls when they are playing and chasing each other. Since I've used these stuff on nearly everything breakable within their reach, they have not managed to knock over a single thing! Vase/candle holder/picture frames/ knicknacks/etc on tables, glass bottles on window sill, glass and ceramic food storage containers on the kitchen counters, the external hard drive on the desk, even the tippy charging stand for the headphones... (Once you start, you keep finding new uses.) One suggestion that is a bit different from the instructions, particularly with stuff that has a rimmed edge - rather than making small balls of the stuff, make small worms. You still space it out around the item (not the whole bottom nor whole perimeter), but it makes it easier to control, and less chance of some oozing out. Also, a little goes a long way. I've used perhaps a third of a jar of the Wax, and a bit more than three quarters of a packet of the Putty. I already have a spare packet of the putty though - I refuse to ever again be without a supply of both of these! Hope this helps! 267 people found this helpful

That is one beautiful geode! For something that heavy, I would use Velcro. (hook and loop tape) That is what is recommended for very heavy objects. It might take off the paint when you try to remove it, but so what, it is better than having your amethyst geode crack and break, one that size is very costly. You might also think about insuring it if you live in earthquake territory. The other thing is, you really do want to stick it down well with the Velcro because if it falls on the head of a guest you certainly wouldn't want to be considered negligent.

Most of the videos I've seen are the camera shaking. There's one, however, which seems to be from high in the statue, which implies that the statue shaking is shaking the camera, but then if you look at where the land meets the water, you can see that the view is moving a lot, and evenly, and it's the camera moving on its holder. No doubt Lady Liberty at least vibrated, and likely did full on shake, but it was too small a quake to produce that amount of visible shaking unless the waveforms joined and increased a lot, just there, which is possible, but not so likely. Here, I found a report from a California deputy sheriff who was there. His reaction, which he reports as a casual, ”Feels like an earthquake,” and others around him agreeing, seems to indicate that it was pretty mild there. The park service ”evacuated” the visitors, but that's a fraught word for kicked them out. This wasn't a disaster, Just a reminder that Earth's crust is constantly moving.

i heard the epicenter was in illinois...no mattter for midwest it's always a shock, lol...i hadn't heard was there any damage in the small town? 5.4 isn't that bad but sure can scare you...my dd in south bend didn't feel a thing but a few people called radio station here in detroit? dh is on the treadmill about that time and it's already shakes the bedroom, lol...

One of our radio hosts in Des Moines said she felt it. That sure seems like a long way to feel a 'smaller' earthquake! Strange for the midwest!

Woke us up here in Central Illinois. The quake was centered 6 miles from West Salem, Illinois.

People in the Detroit area felt it as well. I think my animals felt it because Lucy did something I never saw her do - she ran like crazy back and forth up and down the hallway and Loki got up out of his bed and just stood still. I was wondering what was up with them. LOL I was in the bathroom and didn't feel anything.

Really shaky here in E'ville this morning...epi-center was about 60 miles west of us. Been through these things many times before but this is the first time I ever "heard" a quake....very loud roaring sound...weird!!!!! Hope everyones alright....

It shook us all awake this morning. We live about 80 miles south of Louisville, Ky. I've always said my DD could sleep through a tornado, and she could, but not through an earthquake. I thought the dogs where having a wrestling match under my bed until DD came barging through the door, wild eyed, and asking if I had felt that.

I live an hour from St. Louis, but didn't feel anything. My DH would have been on his way to work at that time, so I'll have to ask him if he felt it.

I remember watching a TV show about a Midwest earthquake that was larger then the San Francisco one. Bad thing is it could happen again since there is a fault line. Here is some information about it.

"Some of the largest U.S. temblors ever recorded, along the nearby New Madrid fault, struck the Midwest about two centuries ago in what is now southeast Missouri. Four quakes, measuring as large as 8.1, hit between December 1811 and February 1812. They leveled towns and created waves on the Mississippi River so large that observers reported the waterway was running backward, according to the USGS.

Clare, I remember seeing that. It was a great program. We're having some pretty strong aftershocks right now....sure is unsettling to suddenly feel all this movement.....

i remember being in Indiana as a child...on the farm and feeling one...Mom's dishes went rumblin around in the dining room cabinet...

I'm glad all you midwesterners are safe!! i was in San Francisco years ago when one occured...it registered like 7 about 30 miles away and it sounded like a freight train coming by us! I was sitting in the lobby of the hotel...the chandlier overhead was shaking and the noise was so loud...i asked the hotel clerk if it was an earthquake and in his snottiest voice replied something like "Yeah, right!"...bet he was surprised when he found out it was!

What time was this....???

Last night I got out of bed because it felt like it was shaking...I thought one of the big dogs was under my bed scratching or something.

It has been raining a LOT here..I thought maybe it was the house settling because the ground is so wet.....hummmmmm

I was in downtown Louisville when it happened this morning. I had just pulled into a parking lot at one of the four facilities I visit there, was writing down my info and my car started rocking back and forth. At first, I looked up into the rearview mirror to see who was rocking my car. When I didnt see anyone, I assumed there had been an explosion of some type nearby, making the ground shake. Funny thing was, it lasted about 20 seconds and I thought it must have been a big one. When I got inside the building, the security guard and nurses were answering phones that were ringing off the hook and residents were outside there apartments saying we just had an earthquake. Took about 5 minutes to hit the news. I still cant believe it. I never would have thought we would get aftershocks here!
