Holiday Gift 'Grab Bag'

I am going to a Christmas party next week at an organization I belong to. We are supposed to bring a wrapped food or kitchen related gift costing no more than $10. They all go into a box and everyone picks one so we can't buy for a specific person.

If we had a similar thing here at the CF, what gift would you put into the box?

(I will try and find a photo of my gift and post it when I do.)

Oh geez. I guess I'd choose something that everyone can always use, even if they already have one. Probably a microplane.

wine opener? nice cocktail napkins? cheese knives? There's a lot to chose from at Home Goods.

Just checked out your trade list, and among your wants is Hummingbird Vine. Gotta warn ya,...speaking from personal experience, Hummingbird Vine (aka Trumpet Vine) is evil incarnate! It is an extremely invasive fast grower that will do its best to take over every square inch of your property, no matter where you plant it. Aaaaand, once established, good luck trying to kill it. Trumpet Vine seeds are something you give to people you don't like. - That said, I do have seeds I received as a "bonus" in a trade, and if you still want some, they're all yours.

Like Paige, the first thing I thought of was wine glasses... or Pier One has some GREAT martini glasses - and that's something most people don't by themselves. (Ok, I have this little problem (OK, DH thinks it's getting to be a big problem)). I LOVE glassware... and have about 20 martini glasses, 30 or 40 wine glasses (both burgundy and chardonnay), lots of snifters and other barware.. but I'll always open for more. How about 2 fancy glasses, and the wine/liquor/liquer to go with it? (I love lemoncello in liquer glasses). I also love anything for my kitchen (fancy that, since this is where I hang out so much)... serving trays and bowls; ceramic dishes; cocktail, wine and hors d'ouevre plates (I've gotten some really cute things at Williams Sonoma, and I inherited glass ones from my husband's aunt); cool kitchen tools; interesting spices (see penzeys online); Then, since you are all about the same size, there is the wardrobe... scarf, hat, and gloves; etc.... How fun!

We're planning a closet -- typical hall closet size -- that'll have a lock instead of a doorknob; thus, it'll be accessible only to me and my husband. This closet'll have shelves top to bottom, and maybe basket type shelves on the inside of the door for bows, ribbons and so forth. The closet will serve a couple purposes: - gun safe - purchased-ahead gifts - gift wrap - a small amount of cash that we keep on hand As for buying ahead, I do pretty well with it. It's rare that I buy something that just sits around forever and ends up at Goodwill. When I wrap things, I just do basic wrap and use a sticky note to remind me what the item is. I add the bow at the last minute so that I can stack boxes without messing up th wrappers. I like the idea of putting your gift wrap items near the dining room. Practical and efficient.

I grew up in a house where Santa left everything wrapped in tissue paper. Well after about 2 Christmases with small children in my house, he started leaving everything in red flannel bags tied with green yarn. Every New Years Eve we left them folded by the half empty candy dishes and John Goblin took them back to Santa after refilling the dishes. Ah memories. Santa doesn't come to my house anymore and that's ok but he used those bags for about 20 years. Merry Christmas all.. Faye

Both my husband's family & my family has a Yankee gift exchange. The one for my family has a $10 maximum. This year I have pancake mix made by a local company (New Hope Mills) and maple syrup that was made locally too.

A small bamboo cheese board, maybe one of those ceramic vegetable peelers, a thick handled whisk, or a half dozen linen dish towels.

Gee, I wish I knew enough cooks to go to a party where there is a gift exchange. Everyone I know (but me and my chef-SIL) just buys pre-made food. >

I would choose the IKEA cheese shredder. It has a container, lid, non slip bottom and two interchangeable grates - $7.99.

Ruthanna, I saw really a cute Santa wine cork in PotteryBarn catalogue, they also have a cute Santa hat and scarf for a wine bottle and they were around 8.99!

I have a pusher puller oven rack thingey...but not nearly as cute as ruthanna's little animal.
When I do a grab bag gift, I try to have it be something that gets used up...like paper goods, candles, spices, jams or jellies, hand lotion hand soap and stuff like that.
