Do you mean the one with Colin Firth as Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth? That's the one I like, I think it came out about 10 years ago. Masterpiece Theater is currently running the series of Austen novels from the BBC and that's the version they showed.

I tried to watch the Kira Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice but have been spoiled by the Colin Firth one. Even my husband likes that one. Greer Garson and Lawrence Olivier, I think it was, played in a version a long time ago. I didn't like that one either. Now I'm trying to watch Sense and Sensibility.

I agree, sheila. It's probably my least favorite version. For one thing, Kiera Knightly is way too pretty to play Elizabeth... simply giving her bad hair is not going to make her look ordinary. She still looks beautiful, just with bad hair!

I love, love, love the Pride and Prejudice with with Colin...*sigh*...Firth and Jenniger Whatshername. For me, that is the P&P standard. We just watched 'Becoming Jane' this week. Not the best movie I have ever seen, but it was still good.

Yes, love all the characters in the BBC 10 year old version and have been Tivoing the Masterpiece Theater series.

The BBC mother was such a wonderful embarrassment. Mr. Collins so oily--how he would rush his fingers to his lips when interrupted. Colin--what else to say but to drool! Lady Catherine DeBeurve (sp?) was so much better scripted in that version too. Clearly, the BBC script was superior--how else to explain Sutherland and Judy Dench being so forgettable?

The BBC father was loving to his daughters, while Sutherland seemed merely a disconnected slob. Mr. Bingley in this version was so daft, silly and effeminate that I wonder why anyone would be attracted to him except for his fortune. And with such an unpleasant mother and father, how on earth could the elder daughters have turned out to be so nice?

Moreover, the costuming left a lot to be desired. Clearly it did depict them as poor and with poor taste as well. I noticed they also truncated the story of the youngest sister's potential ruination of herself and her sisters.

I prefer the BBC version in every aspect.

I studied all of Jane Austen years ago in college and read P&P several times, and the 6-part series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is the ONLY one that comes close to representing the novel. In fact, many many stretches of dialog are directly out of the novel itself, very little deviation. FIRTH = DARCY.

I gave this movie to my SIL, she's a real fan of Jane Austen. She didn't tell me if she liked it, I hope she appreciated my efforts to find her a good birthday gift. It certainly cost enough!

I know it's a departure from the book, and I enjoyed the Firth version very much, but this one is my favorite. That might be mainly due to the cinematography. I love the mood, the ambiance. This one did a much better job of pulling me in and placing me in the story as not only a spectator but almost a character with invested interest. There are some parts I didn't like that deviated from the story, but I decided to take the movie as it was - a love story - and not try to compare it to the book or another movie version of the book. Also loved Knightley's Lizzie as a much more empassioned young woman. I think if the script writer and director had set out to do Pride & Prejudice, then it would be a miserable job, as most of you agree. But, I don't think that was their intention at all and were fully aware they were re-writing the story, and they did a fabulous job of it. The same with Emma Thompson's version of Sense and Sensibility. The best one by far but only if not compared to the book.
