Any one ever cover a table in Grass Cloth?

Hi there. I am wondering if anyone ever covered a table with grass cloth wallpaper. Am loving that look and wondering if I should try it with fabric or if I should use grass cloth wallpaper (schumacher, onna sisal, black). Thanks a ton for any input.

I don't think real grasscloth holds up well to abrasion -- the kind of rubbing a table would normally get.

For a table that is used infrequently, a vinyl grasscloth-look would probably perform better.

Or perhaps coat with many coats of a matte-finish poly?

I hadn't seen any of these so did a bit of Googling. I found a site where some questions were answered by experts, which may help you. Link below!

My experience has been as negative as the others. I don't have it in my lawn, yet. I think it came in on a plant. It popped up last year in a raised/retaining wall (for ornamentals) that I have. I also had the weed cloth barrier. It just ran along under the weed barrier and popped out wherever a plant or edge was. This year I intend to move the ornamentals that are there (only a few), pour boiling water over the area and solarize and possibly use black plastic as well. I would have done that last summer, but we had unusually cool weather for summer and very few days over 90 degrees (which I've always heard down here you need for the clear plastic). I've never tried the boiling water technique, but have only heard of it. On the other hand, I have lots of native and very strong willed grasses growing where I have my raised vegetable beds. For those I, also, used cinders that are two blocks high. I laid cardboard down, even under the actual cinder blocks, filled with soil, and I have not had any problems with the other grasses popping through. However; bermuda was not in that area. I've only had these raised beds about a year and a half. I've also grown to despise weed cloth. Hope this helps someone.

I've had a patch for years now. To make sure it doesn't get away on me I have a big pot I cut the bottom out of and buried it to the top of the rim and then planted the grass in it.This also keeps other grasses from mixing with it .Of course if you had a very weed free garden with no quack grass ( which I don't ) that would not be a problem.While I was still working I gave a lot of it to my Native patients.

I never found wallpaper difficult to hang but working with grasscloth and anaglypta, with the difficult cuts around doors, windows, electrical outlets, etc, of grasscloth and the inability to roll anaglypta out of fear of depression are more than I want to tackle at my age. I did a friend's den/library (large room) in grasscloth which did not have as many doors, windows, etc., as my LR/DR combination which was my second and final hanging of grasscloth back in the 1970s in my typical ranch, but that was a wild ride. I got it done and it was beautiful. Before I moved in the late 1980s it was still beautiful. I painted the cinnamon striped grasscloth to a lacquered cinnabar color in 1985 with a cream colored tuxedo sofa, Chippendale tables, etc., and Chinese decorative accents including beautiful screens in the DR. So, if you do a straight wallpaper without any of the zigging and zagging, you can later paint it a pretty color and keep it. It is expensive and worthy of keeping for more than a couple years. When you master that, you can anglytpa your ceilings, which I have done in 2 different houses. Don't do this if you suffer from vertigo or fear of heights.

How would you cover a Clothes Hanger with Fabric???

There are many ways to cover hangers but one of the most unique ones I have seen is to cut a pattern the shape of the top part of the hanger & about 6" on the sides, straight across the bottom. Back one piece & front, cut about the bottom of the hanger & add a seam allowance to insert a zipper there. Finish off a section on the top where the hanger will go through. Place right sides together & seam all way around. Leave zipper partly open before doing this so you can get your hand inside to finish unzipping it to turn it. These can go under things seldom worn for hiding places or to put accessories to wear with the garment...Whatever the heart desires.

Thanks so much for your responses. My3dogs, I too saw that post regarding the Weird Grass cloth project, she is going to do the same project as me, just wanted to see if any of daring and wonderfully helpful Gardenweb folks had taken on this project (or had got the look using fabric). Sweeby, I too thought of vinyl, but the papers I saw were too shiny : ( . It's a console table, so if I use the grass cloth or fabric, I am going to finish it in low luster poly to give it some durability. Thanks again for the responses! : )

Most faux grasscloth vinyls DO look shiny, but there are a very few that don't. We chose one in a navy & gold for our boy's bath and it's the most natural-looking yet durable stuff. It was a Waverly paper (of all things...) and we did the work about 3 years ago? Might be worth checking...
