How would you cover a Clothes Hanger with Fabric???

I found many ways to cover a wire clothes hanger. But none were what I "think" I want. Ever had that " I think" mind set? What I "think" I want is to cover it with a padding (Quilt?) then fabric. But if I use strips/bias strips or tubes without a lot of tacking down will it work? I do not want to use glue. Any and all suggestions needed, I am stumped on this one or could be my old age!!

There are many ways to cover hangers but one of the most unique ones I have seen is to cut a pattern the shape of the top part of the hanger & about 6" on the sides, straight across the bottom. Back one piece & front, cut about the bottom of the hanger & add a seam allowance to insert a zipper there. Finish off a section on the top where the hanger will go through. Place right sides together & seam all way around. Leave zipper partly open before doing this so you can get your hand inside to finish unzipping it to turn it. These can go under things seldom worn for hiding places or to put accessories to wear with the garment...Whatever the heart desires.

Family Fun magazine had a pattern a while back and it may be on their website. The made a pattern and sewed 4 sections to cover the hanger. The used strips of quilt atting to give the padded effect.

My grandmother used to use rug yarn half hitched around a hanger. She used wire hangers, but I don't see why you couldn't use plastic, other that it would obviously take more yarn. She would start at the tip of the hook by taping the tail, then carefully make her first few half hitch knots. After that it was easy to keep them from sliding off the end. At the place where the hanger divides, she would just keep going along one side, and end at the other end of the divide. I can't remember exactly how she finished that end. I do remember her taking a couple of seperate pieces about 6-8 inches long and tieing a bow around the neck of the hanger. You could probably use an acrylic chunky or bulky weight yarn now. I have no idea how much yarn she used per hanger. Probably 3 - 5 times the measurement of the hanger, which would probably depend on the thickness of the hanger. She would measure off how much she needed, I'm sure when she learned to do this that she was told how much she needed, then roll the length into a ball, which made it easy to make the knots. I hope I explained this so you can understand it. They are wonderful hangers! I still have a few. The clothes don't slide off. My mom used to sometimes use crochet thread and single crochet a strip of 5 stitches however long it took to cover the length of the hanger, then whip stitch it over the hanger. Tami

the best I could find yesterday was a full size sheet I had hanging in the double window of the spare room! hahaha I did see a sheet set that I liked, might go back and get it if I can't find something elsewhere. I don't want a dark or plain fabric, white hair. So, I did start a cover, using the 9to4 pattern. While I love the colors I used, I am not so sure about for a couch cover. But I am going to keep plugging away on it, it will make a nice quilt for the back of the couch if I don't get it big enough..we will see how it goes. Have a couple of issues going on with family at the moment, so this gives me a good something to concentrate on for the time being this will be good! Thanks Lisa

hah, heh, lol.... No. It's even difficult for smaller sizes of copper wire and metallic sheathings like bx cable, to carry fault current to trip a breaker. I would highly doubt the cloth could even carry the current to light a neon test bulb.

I have one of those L-shaped thingies! I'll try to find it. I mounted mine on the INSIDE of the door frame, well above the rod, so that it sticks out into the closet, above the clothes themselves, taking advantage of that space just above the shoulders of the clothes. One thing I like about this solution is that I have lots of different styles of hangers, and they will all fit. My biggest reason for getting this was so that the empty hangers would be all in one place, when I took the clothes off them. Here is the one I have. Here's a link to some instructions about how to make padded hangers for storing historic clothing or costumes. It's from the National Park Service, and may not be exactly what you are looking for, but the pattern is included and the instructions are very detailed.

I'm a bit of a scavenger and as I have tons of plastic hangers I devised a system for padding and covering them. I think you could easily adapt it to a wired hanger. I would just beef up the part where you wrap the hanger with batting strips. This would give more volume to the part the clothes rest on and should prevent any slipping of the cover.
