Antifreeze (and a laxative) in my eye drops

My eye doctor gave me a free sample of Systane Ultra lubricant eye drops, along a coupon for $1 off the purchase of a regular bottle.

The drops seemed to work well, so I took my coupon to the store. When I saw the price (higher than all other eye drops on the shelf) I abandoned the idea of buying it, and left the coupon for someone else to use. I was curious to see if the ingredients were the same as in the less expensive brands, so I checked. They were not the same, but I was shocked to find that one of the two active ingredients was Propylene Glycol. That's antifreeze!

I didn't recognize the other ingredient, Polyethylene Glycol, so I looked it up. It's Miralax, the product my doctor prescribes for colonoscopy prep.

Quite apart from the concerns I have about putting antifreeze and a laxative in my eyes, I think it's pretty amazing that the price of these eye drops is so high--considering that antifreeze and Miralax are so cheap.
