3 y/o Boxer - Forgot House Training???

Hi, I'm a newbie here and this is my first post!

We have two dogs, an almost 3 year old chihuahua and a 3 year old boxer. Both have been successfully house trained and have minor accidents once in a blue moon, usually when they are sick or when left alone for a long period of time (rarely happens).

We recently went on vacation and were gone over a 4 day period. We had someone house sit and watch the dogs...and after putting the pieces together I don't see how she could've done things as asked and had as many problems as she did (but that's another story). The dogs had MULTIPLE accidents while we were gone. We were shocked to say the least as this is EXTREMELY out of the ordinary. (We've been on several short and extended vacations in the past few years and have NEVER had any problems with the dogs and a house sitter)

My problem is our boxer has had close to ten accidents inside the house since we've been back (over the course of a week and a half). It's like all of a sudden he's developed amnesia and forgets that he's supposed to go outside before relieving himself. One morning we were laying in bed, talking and trying to wake up and the dog lifted his leg and went all over the dvd player and cable box in our bedroom! He's gone on the recliner and the sofa, the kitchen floor....I've been frustrated to the point of tears many times in the last week and I really don't know what to do! I'm at a total loss - please help!!!

I know this is a standard answer on this forum, but its a good one. A trip to the vet is in order to rule out any medical problems.

I wonder if your house sitter left the dogs inside for long hours, and your boxer caught a bladder infection as as result of "holding it" for so long? Easy to diagnose if you get his urine tested.

We tend to think of the age of plants in the same manner we think of age in humans or animals - chronologically. We, like plants, go through several life stages - embryonic, juvenile, adolescent (intermediate in plants), and mature, are stages roughly mirrored in plants. Where we vary greatly is in the way our cells age. In animals, body cells all mature at approximately the same speed. Plants grow by consecutive divisions of cells at the growing points (meristems), so their various parts are different ages. Chronologically, the tissues at and near the transition from roots to shoots will always be the oldest tissue, but ontogenetically, it will always be the youngest tissue and will retain its juvenile vigor. Which is why when we cut our shrubs back hard to force strong new growth it's called rejuvenation pruning. Vigor wanes as the distance between newly forming cells and the root to shoot transition increases. That is why the maximum height of trees and other upright plants is limited. If you're happy with the way a plant looks, by all means, enjoy it. If you're unhappy with its appearance, you can usually whack it back and start over - especially if the plant is reasonably healthy. Cutting it back hard both above & below ground can give a tired plant a new lease on life. Ideally, if you decide to cut the plant back hard, you would not prune the top back all the way at the same time you repot/root prune. Leave a good amount of foliage on the plant to make food for the newly forming roots that regenerate after the repot. In 2-3 weeks, after the plant has its feet back under it, finish pruning the top back as hard as you're comfortable with. Most growers are unnecessarily timid about pruning or manipulating the growth habits of their houseplants - afraid they'll die if they're relieved of a little mass. I was once the same, but some of the radical procedures I regularly perform on trees has taught me that plants in general are survivors. If they have a reasonable amount of stored energy, they will tolerate almost anything in the way of mechanical manipulation. Can you imagine a maple tree with a 1" thick trunk being split in half from the roots to the top of the plant, making 2 trees from one, and both surviving as though nothing had happened? Diane, I am glad y'all are planning on coming despite Steve's accident, and am thrilled he is doing so well although I know a very long recovery lies ahead of him. You know, all we really care about is that you folks come! Everyone will understand if the chaos continues and you don't have extra plants to bring. It's amazing to think you have any plants up and growing at all after what y'all have been through the last couple of weeks. I know it is going to be a tough spring with Steve unable to help you like he usually does, so don't be too hard on yourself and try to do too much. The important thing is that Steve survived amazingly well considering the seriousness of his injuries. We're all going to have such a grand and glorious day together at Paula's. Dawn

Just a small comment about PH. I help my friend bottle his sauce named CHICAOJI---(chee-COW-jee)---not super hot, but has unique ingredients and totally yummy http://www.chicaoji.com/ and also do PH testing for each 4 1/2 gallon batch we make. The sauce passes to be shelf stable (doesn't need refrigeration after opening) in the eyes of USDA as well as Washington State. In order to get the "Shelf Stable", the PH has to come in at 3.30 or lower. This makes it great for restaurants, backpackers, long cruise boaters , hippies living without power, and many others. Just saying this is a great thing and if your sauce came down a mere .30 in PH it too would be able to not be refrigerated after opening. I am not a scientist and so I don't know how difficult that would be to bring it down, but it sure is nice to not have to keep putting the bottle back into the fridge each time after using. keep up the good work.....and order some Chicaoji, it is yummy

Questions
Are your dogs fixed? Need info on both dogs.
Do you leash walk your dogs?If so how often and how long of a walk? If not where do they go and how often (what is their schedule)
What kind of training have each of the dogs been through?

I agree - go to the vet to rule out a UTI. If your boxer truly has regressed, which could have been caused by the possible inadequate care by the sitter, you will have to start at square one with housetraining, just like when he was a pup. This time around, he should 'get it' faster, since he's been trained before.

Mazer, please read the original post again. This is not a case of inadequate training and exercise. The dogs were fine, but unfortunately left with a sitter who did not do a good job.

Wow I can't believe I didn't even think of a UTI! We'll definitely try to get him in next week (we live in a small town, everything is only open M-F). :P In the meantime, I think we'll work on hardcore reinforcement of "the basics".

As weed30 said, this is not due to inadequate training and exercise. Unfortunately, we left them with someone who simply didn't do the job.

rachier how are you cleaning up the wees? try not to use any cleaners with things like ammonia in them because to your dog they may smell like another dog has peed there and he's going to want to pee over the top of it so it can create a cycle. some of the enzyme sprays can be quite good at neutralising the smell but I agree he needs to be checked for a uti and some re-enforcement to get through to him the toilet is outside

weed - I DID READ THE OP, I READ ALL OPS VERY CAREFULLY. I also know that issues with pets are not always straight forward. Which is why I usually ask questions when I suspect there might be something else a foot. This may be a UTI, but it may be behavioral and not just because the dogs were left for an extended amount of time. The dogs have reached maturity and if one or both are not fixed this can start issues, on top of being in a stressful situation, such as being left. My questions are important to determine the cause and not just make stabs in the dark about what is wrong.
