Sorry, I just don't see the craftsman style working here, windows OR door. I'm not coming up with a door that would permit you to look outside. I see a solid door or one with two rectangular lights at the top -- you'd have some light, but couldn't see out (and no one could see in). Think twice about hanging shutters too narrow to (visually) completely cover a window. If you are going to paint the door, don't spend a lot on wood good enough to stain.

Dark blue, black and brown are not “pops of color” in my book! But maybe they are in yours. But you definitely need to get the brick taken care of first: the shutters kept the brick from aging as much as the exposed brick. I think there’s a special cleaning method for brick—make sure you use a reputable company. Are you painting the siding? If that’s the front door, it definitely needs a more impressive entrance. Probably a more substantial portico with new light. New house numbers (stylish ones) and a new mailbox (if that’s in use)..

Thanks for the input chloebud. What style would you say my home is? More classic? Do you think that the whole door needs to be lighter or would a white trim be enough to help it pop? I realize that the shutters are too small and, honestly, if we had built this house there would be no shutters all. But, alas, they are here and since they are built into the stone, they won’t be going anywhere until we’re ready to redo all of the stone. (I am ready but the husband is going to take some convincing lol) I was hoping by painting the shutters a different color they wouldn’t bother me as much. The shingled roof is a gray with a hint of green. The small roof to the side of the front door is a dark brown bronze.

The bed that it came from will likely be empty for months because I want to try to make sure that I've got it out of there. Believe it or not, I'm actually considering replanting it along the open side of my carport. That area is in the view of my carport doorbell camera. When the camera detects motion, it sends a text notification, makes an announcement inside the house, and records 90 seconds of video, The gate for my neighbor's backyard is in between our houses. He uses it about 7 billion times a day, and we get the notifications, announcements, and videos each time. I've visited the idea of blocking the view between the houses several times, but haven't found a quick/simple solution that I can accept. Now I suddenly find myself with with all of this nandina, and I think it would do the job until I close in the carport.
