I don't know what posts preceeded this but I'm assuming this is a picture of a magnolia tree. Am I right?

Our magnolia looks nothing like this. Ours has dark green oval leaves, has a somewhat cone shape and the flowers are white and about 3" across with a double layer of petals.

Could this tree be a dogwood or azalea?

Please forgive me if I've misinterpreted the intent of this post, I probably should not have intruded.

well, it doesn't matter-- join in! we've been told by our gardener that this is actually a magnolia: a soulangiana magnolia sometimes called a Japanese or Chinese magnolia. I've looked it up online and in the Wayside catalog, and it is indeed this "oriental magnolia", which is called many different things. Here's the details:

Magnolia X soulangiana

Scientific name: Magnolia X soulangiana cv. Extinus

Author: Etienne Soulange-Boudin (1774-1846)

Common name: Magnolia cultivar Extinus

Family: Magnoliaceae

In what section of the country does it grow? We're in zone 9Fl and I don't believe I've ever seen one. Or perhaps I have and didn't know what it was.

you're right down the street:-) I'm in coastal GA. They say it's good for the North. the name of the person who made this hybrid was French. Everyone has been asking me lately what it is. I had house guests and they asked me to send pics of it to them! You can google pink magnolia and you'll find it. It doesn't have any leaves.

I promised Squirrelheaven I would send her a pic cuz she's looking for one of these and wasn't sure we were talking about the same tree:-)

I have two of these saucer magnolias, I live in IL.

I wanted to tell decorpas since she asked, that is not helpful at all, since mine won't bloom at least until Mother's Day. :)

You all in the south are no doubt familiar with sweet bay magnolias, I have attached a picture.

They are indeed two different trees, and that is exactly why it is helpful to use the Latin names when mentioning a specific tree!

oh yes, that one is totally different. We have so many magnolias here, it's crazy. but this one is really unusual in that there are no leaves-- meanwhile, the rest of the magnolias are rich, green leaves. Weird. this one is kind of Dali-esque in it's beauty.

You'd think since I studied Latin I could remember the Latin names...but, not so much:-)

I have no idea what zone I'm in (Indiana), but it's cold here! My Jane Magnolia has lots of buds waiting to open! I am attaching a link that shows some good pictures of the Jane. This link says zones 5-8, but others say 3 or 4 through 8?? Not sure what is correct, but mine has been planted for 3 years and is doing well here. Can't wait to see the blooms!

My blooms look similar to decorpas', but my tree has leaves on it.

I can't believe how many magnolias there are listed on the North Carolina coop extension site! WOW.

spring has sprung for sure:-) now I'm hoping my silly daffodils will make an appearance! I am afraid they aren't coming back this year.

Thanks for the pics, Decorpas! I can't tell if it's the one, though, as it's the tree shape and size I'm after. I guess it would be called an 'umbrella' shape.

Such a beautiful tree and all I can find is descriptions and no pics! I believe what we have at home and here on this property is a pink Southern. Round, large, wide open flowers. They bloom early here. Still bumping into frosts and sometimes even a light snow.

I don't think this is an umbrella shape, but I'll keep my eyes open! it sounds gorgeous...

At our last home we had Saucer Magnolias like yours in the photo.
They are absolutely beautiful.

Another name for it--saucer! I found five different names for it, but saucer is easiest, so I'll go with that.

They also grow (and are in bloom) in zone 8 Texas....they are so pretty and usually one of the first bloomers along with the flowering quince.

Another name for that tree here in NC is a tulip tree or a tulip magnolia. Don't know the Latin name, though.

Not sure where zone 4 is, but my neighbor in Akron, Oh. had a beautiful, mature saucer magnolia. We have them here in So. Ca., too. They're blooming now ( began in Feb.!)

It's so neat to get all of your posts about this tree! My father was enthralled with it on his last visit and I got to tell him today that he CAN grow one in Michigan, where he lives...he was so pleased:-)

Does anyone know if it gets leaves later in the season? Right now mine has none, but it must get them sometime.

I grew up in NY and always remember them blooming around Easter! Well, whadaya know! Easter's right around the corner!

decorpas~It will get leaves later in the season, and they will turn a lovely yellow color in the fall.

polkadots' 'Jane' is a cultivar (a special selection) of the saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangiana), selected for its large fragrant blooms.

straitlover's tree is NOT a magnolia, but it's in the same family (Magnoliaceae), the Latin name is Liriodendron tulipifera. I've linked to it here.

The tree I'm talking about is the saucer magnolia. Apparently the people I know that call it a tulip tree are using the wrong name - LOL! I call it a saucer mag. :)
