I am with Laceyvail - don't use weedcloth in a garden! If you google weedcloth on many of the forums, you'll see lots of opinions that agree with this. Roots of woody plants from below and weed seeds that have blown in from above will root into the fabric and you will come to regret putting it in. It keeps mulch separated from the soil, so the soil doesn't get new organic matter and as the mulch breaks down and organic matter blows in you have new growing medium on top of the landscape fabric. It's an all around bad idea and the nightmare is when you decide to get rid of it . . . DH did this once many years ago and it both didn't work and was misery to remove a couple of years later. It does have its uses - to keep drainage material from washing out from behind a dry-stacked stone retaining wall, to keep soil in a basket where you want to plant annuals, or under a walkway to separate layers of soil and drainage material, but you will come to regret ever using it where there are plants growing in a garden. Instead of using landscape fabric, I mow down everything to ground level and sometimes will dig a few weeds that I know to be stubborn, put down heavy cardboard and then a heavy layer of medium fine mulch on top of that to a depth that settles to about 3 inches. That's enough to prevent most weeds from sprouting and to keep most of the already present weedy plants from coming up through. I let that sit for a few weeks to a year and then plant. If you are in a hurry to plant, though I can't imagine that this is a great time to plant in most areas of Colorado right now, you can use some type of contact weed killer (they range from gas flame weed torches to strong vinegar to Roundup.) One more quick comment - since you are planning to redo the whole area, now would be a perfect time to add any soil supplements like more organic matter to help hold moisture and nutrients.

If you refer to them as Lilium Tigrinum everyone will immediately know what you're dealing with... as opposed to the "ditch lilies" many find pesky. Your tigers are the easiest of the lilies to grow and have great success with. They just never seem to disappoint especially if you've got a sunny spot with good drainage. Personally, I would not soak them - just crumble the soil away from the bulbs by hand to separate them out then plant the bulbs at least 6" deep... the top of the bulb below where the stem starts should be the 6" beneath the soil line. They're tough, you can't hurt them even if you accidently break off a stalk which by now should be starting to yellow out. Water them in and forget them till they emerge in the spring. Aside from getting the lilies into the ground - I'd probably spend this time preparing any future planting beds and making a few elimentary plans before doing any planting. There are all kinds of ground covers - from Uva-Ursi (bearberry) or Sedums like Dragon's Blood to creeping Junipers, etc. What do you like and what do you want to look at from what vantage point; and are you planting things for your own pleasure or for curb appeal? Think you'll be happier with any results by working out a basic plan.

Squirrels around here dig holes in the flower pots and beds to bury pecans and acorns. I wonder if they remember where they put them and ever get around to retrieving them as there are sure a lot of tree seedlings that come up in pots every spring! Sprinkling hot pepper on the soil as mentioned above does help to deter them. I use a product called called Squirrel Away. It's sold at garden centers to keep squirrels out of bird feeders. I'll have to check on the price of cayenne at Costco as opposed to Squirrel Away next time I go. Squirrels are cute and I enjoy them, but sometimes they are pesky little creatures like when they knock pots over as they jump around. Not only that, but I suspect that it was them that ate all the flowers off of my Christmas cactus when I sat it outside one day to get some light! Here is a link that might be useful: Squirrel Away

Nothing to be afraid of, I'm always shuffling my lilies around. I find them to be quite easy to grow. Other than voles, and stem borers, the only time I lose them is when I try to stretch their limits for shade tolerance. If yours are getting crowded, I'd consider that a sign that they're happy, and you could probably find some new homes for some of them now. Otoh, if they are shrinking in size, I'd want to dig in there, and find out why-voles, rot, etc.
