Afraid to pull the trigger, what do you think?

Ok, I HAVE to buy light fixtures for the kitchen. Since we live in the South, we decided to go with a ceiling fan for the primary cooking area of our L shaped kitchen. I'm going for an contemporary cottage look. Do you think this fan fits the bill? Do you think I should get it in the chrome and black (what I'm leaning toward) or the ORB with the amber glass? Here's some other information that might be helpful. My cabinets (which are sitting in my garage) are antique white, a lovely creamy white in a shaker style door. The floor will be cremna travertine with noche acccent tiles and some brown glass with emperor marble so it's a mix of dark and light browns. Appliances are stainless. Wall color, counters, and splash have yet to be picked.

So which do you prefer?

From what you've described...creamy whites and browns I would go with the ORB version of the fan..which I really like by the way...

So-called drainage stuff in the bottom of the pot doesn't work they way folks think. Plainly put, drainage isn't better. Never fertilize a stressed woody. It may put out new growth but it will deplete resources it needs to use for recovery.

Someone posted a tip about putting plastic wrap between the bowl and the top of the processor so that the top doesn't get dirty. This works for most of my applications (at least for when I just purÃ©e, and I'm very grateful for it. I have neither Cuisinart nor Kitchenaid because when I bought mine I was on a very strict budget. I'd like to replace the cheaper one I bought, but I don't use it enough to justify it, especially since I now have less time for cooking anyway. I've gone back to using a mandolin for a lot of things I might use a food processor for, and my FP works fine for purÃ©eing. I use my KA mixer for doughs. Lars

I really do like them a lot. What you might want to try is to buy a couple of them & install them on your current cabs and see just how much trouble they will be to keep looking nice, if they exceed your threshold of cleaning pain. Or you could consider using a combination of pulls like a solid metal complimentary pull in the messy area of the kitchen and then use the glass ones in the showier areas, like on buffet cabs, for instance. Depending on you kitchen layout... Least ways, for me, I generally don't mind cleaning the things that I love. The trick, though, is staying in love. ;)

Yes, that is definitely the way to test it out -- slap it on a wall. Dark paint is infinitely easier to pick compared to light/off whites, in my experience -- the color is pretty much the color, usually no wonky color shifts or light situation affecting to any great degree. My first step is narrowing it down to light vs dark, that's where I'm struggling. What I didn't mention is this is a hire it out job, so labor is going to cost $$ -- there is no get it wrong and re-do it next month; next decade maybe... If I went the light direction, it would something along these lines, re-doing the woodwork to a darker stain and pulling in some dark blue-green decorating accents (love BM Silver Pine, for reference of what I'm envisioning): I did get a Samplize of SW Medici Ivory, and it looks good in my space, not pulling yellow (at least not in the places I've tried it out already). I've got some leftover Silver Pine from when DH painted the vanity, I can throw that up on the walls just to give me an idea even if it's not quite the right color for the walls. Sigh...

It's a pretty fan, but are you sure it's going to provide enough light?

We have a similar fan in our master bedroom with the amber light casing, and because the amber is so opaque, it does not provide very much light at all.

Honestly, I'm not sure of anything. I'm having sooooo much trouble finding lighting I really like. This is the first thing that has 'grabbed' me but I really prefer the look of the chrome light over the orb. I'm just afraid it will be too stark with everything else in the room.

As for the lighting plan, we are going to have something over the sink, under-counter lighting and a different ceiling mounted light in the other half of the L. I also have two windows and a door that has window panes in the top third. Right now the room is dark because it has wood paneling everywhere, but we are painting that a light color as well.

I'm open to other options. Thanks for the input. Keep it coming.

SO it's not task lighting. It takes a lot of bulbs (candelabra base I noticed) so it might be fine for general lighting. It's very cool and I'm trying to think of a place to put it in my house (and if that's not enough to scare you away, well, you're brave!).

I suspect the ORB one will go better, but it does have a very different feel from the chrome one for some reason. Sort of a skyscraper 20s apartment vs house with a dooryard look, both with a modern twist. They are both great.

Can you plan on getting one and not actually order it until everything else is in? I think this fan is a keeper, but which!?

Actually, Fori, I consider that a huge compliment. I don't think I can hold off on ordering. He's doing the electrical and the lighting first because he has to patch the wood ceiling when he does the electrical. I guess I will call my guy and see.

Just rehang something you gutted, or a cheap bulb socket. As long as there's a solid whachamacallit box (be sure he knows it'll hold a fan), ceiling fixtures are pretty much interchangeable and you can do it yourself long after your contractor has moved on (not that you need to wait). If the fan has extra wiring (like for a wall switch for the fan speeds and the two globes), as long as you find out ahead of time, he should be able to incorporate them. Even if you go with a totally different fan, you'd want the same wiring.

if anyone is interested I talked to DH and he really prefered the ORB so I got that one, along with a flush mount light for the other end of the room, check the link below.

Oh I like that one a lot too!

It's so nice when someone has a really strong preference and you can just get that!
