I love dark rooms...so why can't I pull the trigger?

I love richly painted walls and relish the sense of being enveloped by the space. Not to mention the fact I love color and am not afraid of it. I had no trouble with paint decisions at my old house (my aubergine living and dining rooms were smashing, if I do say so...) but I am having a devil of a time deciding what to do here at this house. It may be because of the layout/semi-open concept, but I'm not really sure if it's that or I look at too many pictures and like other looks too and just can't decide which direction to go in. I have a log-sided house with acreage, so need a palette and finishing touches that align with that -- which is the easy part, it's deciding to go with light walls vs dark walls that I can't make up my mind about. What helped you with your decision? What factors should I consider other than availability of natural light (which I have an abundance along the back of the house and great room - south-facing).
