Biting gnats
Comments (7)I don't know if it will allow me to post something again, but will give it a try. Here's what I found out about gnats. GNAT: common name for any one of a number of small, fragile-looking two-winged flies of the suborder Nematocera, order Diptera, which includes the families Tipulidae ( crane flies ), Bibionidae (hairflies), Ceratopogonidae (biting midges ), Chironomidae (true midges), Cecidomyidae (gall midges), Simuliidae ( black flies ), Culicidae ( mosquitoes ), and others. They often assemble together in large mating swarms. In England mosquitoes are called gnats; in the United States it is chiefly the smaller forms of Diptera, especially irritating because of their great numbers and their vicious biting habits, that are referred to as gnats. All gnats have long, hairlike antennae, which are particularly well-developed in the males. Gnat larvae are free-living, most feeding on plants. Larval plant feeders, e.g., the Hessian fly larvae, cause root, stem, and leaf galls to be formed by the host plant. Some species of fungus gnats (families Mycetophilidae and Sciaridae) are very common pests of mushrooms and roots of potted plants in homes and greenhouses. One group of dipterans (family Chloropidae) of the suborder Cyclorrhapha are commonly called eye gnats, or eye flies . Gnats are classified in the phylum Arthropoda , class Insecta, order Diptera. One particularly charming article said that they can fly in your eyes or ears, up your nose, or in your mouth. How well I know. Thanks for reminding me!! I also found what may be a useful page for assorted sprays (pyrethrin, permethrin, etc) and dusts for control over assorted lengths of time. Some are safe for use in veggie gardens, and all are safe for people and pets as soon as they have dried. Some come with a hose-end attachment as well. Hope it might help. pat Here is a link that might be useful: Gnat control...See MoreHelp! Bites on legs, now migrated to neck area!
Comments (13)Place some packing tape, sticky side up, around your bed to see what you collect. You may have fleas, spiders, or some other insect. A regular perimeter treatment around your foundation with an insecticide will tend to keep invasive insects at bay. You do not have to have a pet to get fleas in your home. They can be carried in from the yard on the cuffs of your pants. Seal all cracks and holes in your foundation to prevent insect and rodent pests. Seal around all entries into your home where pipes and wires enter. You can, of course, call an exterminator. For a small fee each month, you can have peace of mind that the interior and exterior perimeters of your home are treated for insects. Comments (19)Jynx who mentioned anything about flogging or bruising. I for one am talking about a light tap on the hand or bottom. As for me turning into an abuser I can tell you, my children can tell you and anyone who knows me can tell you that I never abused my children and this would include their doctors as well. If you spank your children when the situation calls for it then you to are using corporal punishment. IMHO who are judging me before you have had a chance to walk in my shoes. If you can raise your children with a stern no and a firm pressure to the jaw and them obey then I say more power to you. The overall parents that I witness in public pleads, begs, and lets their kids run the household instead of them being parents and taking control by setting rules and boundaries for these kids to abide by. I personally don't call a light tap on the bottom or a slight tap on the hand abuse. Abuse is someone who gets slapped in the face, hair pulled, objects thrown at them and derogatory names such as stupid. I grew up with this and through talking with a counselor and going to church I have learned to forgive my parents for this type of abuse but I greatly praise them for taking me to church, instilling moral values in me and teaching me to obey all types of rules. Just because someone was abused as a child does not label them one also....See MoreFleas, Flea Spray and a Dead Cat.
Comments (48)Fleas can survive soap and water?! I read that they drown in plain water. I already know I wasted my time washng everything. I guess they did live through it. I read about a trick to use where you take a candle and put it in a water dish. The fleas jump toward the heat and CO2 but land in the water and drown. I'm so deparate I was even going to try that, even though it sounded bizaar. What I don't understand either is that it seems to be the basment that is the worst. It is just a cement basement. No rec room, no carpeting, no curtains. I just was down there again for about one minute to spray again (again!) and when I came up the stairs my ankles and feet and calves were COVERED WITH THEM. It reminded me of that old commercial for Off Incect Repellant where the guy sticks his arm into a glass box filled with mosquitos and they all land on his arm. The worst thing about these fleas is that when you slap them, unlike mosquitos, they just spring right up and can't be crushed. I went into my little tool room in the basement, where I rarely go, and there was so much flea dirt that it looked like coffee grounds were scattered all over the table. I had to SWEEP flea dirt out of one of my closets in the guest room there was so much. Things stored in the basement are covered with flea dirt. All my stored canned goods and extra stuff stored under the basement stairs is covered with black specks. HOW????? I know it it flea dirt because when I try wipeing it with a paper towel the specks turn red. How could this have gotten this bad so fast like they just exploded all over. I hope that I don't have the fleas down there because of critters. :shudder: Critters are just about impossible to get rid of once they get in. There are a lot of skunks in the area, I just had one on my back steps a couple of weeks ago. I had to stand in my driveway until it decided to leave. I was hoping it wasn't going to go to sleep there for the night. Front door was locked. Possums too. Lots of rabbits and squirals My garage is overridden with field mice even though I have glue traps, snap traps and poison all set out. Nothing works on those critters. If they got in the house I don't know what I would do. I have to deal with the death of my dear cat Max. My anger at Hartz. And now this flea nightmare that is getting worse and worse. If I find a nest of critters I am going to go insane....See Morepuc13
