leaky toilet

After I flush my toilet, it won't stop running. I've looked on-line for the solution but have run into a problem. There are 3 different types of mechanisms refered to: the floating cup, the floating ball, and the floatless. My toilet doesn't seem to fall into any of these categories. There is no screw to turn and nothing is floating. It is made by American Standard and it's mechanism looks somewhat like a small motor oil bottle. It has a screw-on top but I'm afraid to mess with it without knowing what will happen. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

When you flick the handle down, something in the tank should rise up. This part that rises up should then drop down to stop water from running into the bowl. So, if this part is not dropping down, it means that whatever seal this piece uses might have to be replaced. I think the part you are refering to as looking like a bottle, must be the float. The seal should be somewhere on the bottom of this piece.

Hire somebody. Parts will be cheap. Labor more, but it won't need much. They see this all the time. Probably another job for flowmaster.

In any event, get it done. If you can' do it yourself, you'll have to pay but its simple stuff and once its done, that will be it.

I just had to laugh. I ain't gotta clue how to answer your question...and knew that when I opened your thread. I'm a stupid girl and leave all that stuff to hubby......who I would not exactly label an expert either. But, I just want you to know that only a "bathroom forum friend" would look at your toilet flange and be concerned. Don't you find it kinda comical? Guess we're all in this bathroom remodel "hell" together. That's what America is all about...helping each other out......even with toilet flanges. I wish you many happy flushes to come!

If you soak green drywall, it'll still be ruined. Green may survive a little better with regular with respect to atmospheric moisture. For the amount you'll put in, you might as well get the green.

I think your wasting your time on the toilets. Water for me costs $0.005 a gallon (water & sewer, plus billing & service charges), with that price if the toilet is flushed 10 times a day and you manage to save 1 gallon per flush, net savings per month is $1.50. Big deal, I would think a better and cleaner flushing toilet is more important! That 300 gallon savings could easily be used up by washing a car twice, water your lawn once, 4 minutes per day longer showers combined residents, letting kitchen faucet run 6 minutes a day during dishes, you get the point. Your efforts are better spent on fixing leaks especially toilet flappers (unseen leaks) installing water conserving accessories such as flow restrictors, educating about water usage, lawn watering, car washing, etc. I would venture to say most high water bills are caused by undetected leaks, but more often, missreadings/billings. I just filled my 15,000 gallon pool; total bill $75.00. $1000.00 water bill is a lot of water.

Depending upon the quality/style of valve there may be some shortening of it's life expectancy. The symptom you are describing is indicative of a slow leak, somewhere. Next time, before you open the main, check the water level in all the toilet tanks. Also hot water has a slightly greater volume than cold water.
