I Tried Something New......Success!!

An email from King Artur Flour in Nov. showcasing "Chocolate Cherry Brioche" is was finally made me cave and purchase my bread machine.

Yesterday's snowstorm kept me homebound so I was able to make it, and the 11" of snow I shoveled from our walkways, and deck justified the caloric splurge :)

I had never made brioche, but the step-by-step instructions w/ pictures on the KA Baker's Blog were clear & explicit.

It's not a quick process, but it was worth the time. DH got in around 9pm and had a still-warm slice. He thought I was a culinary genius, but it wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it would be.

amck, aren't those bread machines a wonder? I use mine only for the kneading process, but it's a wrist and a time saver, I can do something else while the machine works and it doesn't need tending.

I like King Arthur Flour and their website. They have some very good recipes, I seldom go wrong there.

The brioche sounds delicious and your husband is right. You ARE a culinary genius, aren't you?

Yes your Euphorbia is a 'Lactea'. I have a very large one. I also have the creasted ones and the Ghost sport. They start very easily from just a small piece of stem. Mine is getting quite old and the trunk is turning into wood. My crested ones, My red trigona, I got a one inch piece of this to begin with. Doubled it's size in 6 months. If any one wants a section of my E. Lactea, I can cut off some to send out.

Looks a lot like my Kardinal Wyszynski from Chalk Hill. I looked for a picture in my Photobucket account, but couldn't find one. I'll try to get one later in the season showing the anthers. Last year was it's first blooming year and I examined it closely and took notes. I was a bit shocked by the blue cast to the red bloom, thinking it would be a truer red. My notes say that the anthers were creamy with darker brown tips. It appears to me that the online pictures at Chalk Hill also show some color on the Anthers and they state that KW has brownish stamens. Here is a link that might be useful: Chalk Hill

thanks for the encouragement all! deb, the sepals (sorry I misspelled that awfully in the post) show a hint of yellow and then fades like the petals but the petals hide that so that you only see the hint of yellow, if that makes sense. :) I was really excited to see this one last year and will be watching it again next summer to see if I can get some good scapes going in a clump and then count the buds etc etc and valuate it etc... Siloam Green Creek is so great with such a bold green and yellow together, I take pics of each bloom and I don't know why I would need so many pics of it on my computer but ahh well. :)

Congratulations on your success with the chocolate-cherry brioche. I got the same email from KA & thought it sounded terrific.

After my early July injury/stroke it was obvious I wouldn't be making bread for a loooong time. So, DH purchased a Breadman Ultimate Plus as a QVC TSV...under a $100, if I remember correctly. It's WONDERFUL! We let the machine make one loaf all the way thru just to see the process. The bread came out so great we both gave it a thumb's up & have been using it 2-3 times/week ever since. After that first try we only use the machine to make the dough & I've taught DH how to shape & take it thru the second raise/bake. Never thought I'd say it; but, the bread's REALLY good! My Electrolux is just collecting dust!

We've most always got 2 lbs. of dough in the fridge developing flavor so it's easy to just grab enough for the two of us & finish it off anyway we are wanting. Today, DH grabbed some cheddar dough & made rolls for ham sandwiches & homemade tomato soup for lunch. The dough quality from the Breadman is so superior to the 5-Minute dough. DH is having a lot of fun & making different types as the mood strikes him.

First off, had to laugh when I read my posted message. My keyboard is sticking when I hit some keys, and I got some misspellings and other errors in that first sentence. Glad you were able to decipher it!

I considered the Breadman you got, Tricia, but I bought the Mini Zo for the convenience of transporting it back & forth between our home and our lake place. Glad to hear yours really is as good as it appeared to be.

I think I will be using mine primarily to mix, knead and, depending on the recipe, rise the dough. The KA site discourages people from trying to hand-knead brioche dough because it is so wet and sticky. My little machine handled it beautifully.

Annie, my competence and confidence in the kitchen continues to grow, but I am still far from being a genius. I am reminded of that every day that I check in here and witness the skill & knowledge that so many of you have to share. But I get a kick out of trying something new and getting it right. And it's always fun to impress DH!

Tricia, cheddar dough rolls sound wonderful with tomato soup! What recipe do you use for your fridge dough?

Congratulations on your success! This means that you will be trying a bunch of other recipes too! Enjoy!

I have really bad wrists too, and I use my bread machine to knead. Still allows great results!

Oh Al....I bought a camera LAST Christmas w/ Amazon gift certificates I received. I am mortified to report that not only have I not learned to post pictures, I haven't really made much use of the camera, despite having a new grandchild to photograph! DH is our designated family photographer.

Funny, I can follow a long and intricate recipe with little problem. In fact, I love the challenge. But as soon as I start to read a technical manual I zone out.

Maybe this coming year...But I can honestly say that my brioche came out looking exactly as the one pictured on the KA recipe.
