Chickens and cats together
Comments (6)These were abandoned kittens that have grown up with the chickens in the chicken house. They aren't allowed inside our house at all! In fact, they think they are chickens. They live in the hen house and when we close the chickens up at night a few might be in there with them -- or not. Either way, they figure out how to get in or out before morning. This bothers us because if a cat can get in, so can a raccoon. We will totally secure the hen houses before winter and I think I can figure out a way to keep the kitties warm also. The problem with the cat food is solved now --- the chickens are looking and looking for their dry cat food though....See MoreHow to handle feeding overweight cats of different ages..?
Comments (3)Are the cats indoor, outdoor or both? Mine are indoor/outdoor cats, and they stay pretty slim even though they eat like pigs inside and go out and eat mice and birds. lol I keep dry cat food out at all times. In the mornings they share one of those small cans of cat food. They nibble on it all day. So they eat pretty well! One thing is puzzling me though. Raptor is 12. Rex is 1 1/2. Raptor has always loved, and I mean LOVED, Purina Cat Chow. When Rex came, I kept a dish of the Purina Cat Chow and a dish of the Purina Kitten Chow side by side. Rex only liked the Kitten Chow which is good because she's only a kitten..kind of. But now Raptor the 12 year old eats only the Purina Kitten Chow and hardly any of the Purina Cat Chow! I figure it's okay for him to eat the kitten chow since it probably has a lot more vitamins, and he gets his protein from the little bit of canned food and mice. :) Oh, I've bought those expensive "specialty" dry foods for my cats, and they wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole!...See MoreFeeding cats seperately -- all day long?
Comments (5)Several options come to mind. You could feed the cats scheduled meals in separate rooms rather than leaving their bowls down all day. You can slow down Frank's rate of consumption at mealtimes by placing several clean rocks in his bowl. The rocks should be heavy enough that he can't shove them out of the bowl, but light enough that he can move them around to get to the kibble. Having to move the rocks to get to his kibble will force him to slow down his eating. You could switch Frank to a calorie-dense food like Innova Evo that would allow you to feed much smaller quantities. Less food bulk may be easier for his stomach to handle. You could feed Frank on a raised surface NOT in your kitchen or diningroom - on top of your washer or dryer, perhaps, or on a bookshelf or dresser? If Chloe really can't jump a baby gate, you could use that to separate her from Frank's food. You're certainly not in an impossible situation. You just need to make adjustments to accommodate the needs of your felines. Laurie...See MoreHow much food for ravenous cat, post-stroke?
Comments (5)You're giving her an entire can of food PLUS dry????? You're overfeeding her. You're also feeding her a lot of empty, useless calories with that Meow Mix that she can't metabolize anyway. It's filled with grains and fillers. The canned food is better for her than the dry. Go ahead and keep feeding her a can a day, split into 4, 1/4 can feedings throughout the day. If you want to give her dry as well, switch to a premium like Innova Evo or Wellness Core that doesn't add grain fillers, and cut back her canned to 1/2 can a day. 1/2 can plus maybe 1/8 c. of one of the premium dry foods a day should be plenty. The 1/2 can can be split into 2-3 small meals, and you can use the 1/8 c. dry as treats when she seems hungry throughout the day. If her increased hunger was triggered by one or more of her meds (prednisone, for instance, will increase appetite), her appetite will hopefully return to normal once the drugs are out of her system. It would be a good idea, however, to have her checked for both hyperthyroidism and diabetes, both of which can cause a dramatic increase in appetite. Her body has been through so much trauma lately that it's certainly not impossible that another illness has taken hold in her weakened state. I wish you and your girl all the best for a speedy and complete recovery. Laurie...See More- 12 years ago
