I do my own "mix" that my family loves, but I don't use much powedered milk... really just enough to give it a little more thickness.

I use the double dutch cocoa from King Arthur and mix it with about twice as much sugar to cocoa (not quite)... in other words to about 2 cups of sugar, I'll add about 1 1/4 c of cocoa. I'll add some non instant milk poweder (or not) maybe around 1/2 cup or so and about 1 tsp of salt.

To make the cocoa, put a few heaping tablespoons in the bottom of a mug and add a shot of water. Stir and put in microwave for about 45 seconds until the stuff starts to bubble. Mix well (it should be hot, liquid and the sugar melted. Then fill the mug with milk, stir and microwave til hot. The amount of base you use depends on the size of your mug or cup. My kids love it!

One year for Christmas, I gave one of the boys who was in college a Rubbermaid container full and on the lid was written: "Return to: (our address) for a lifetime of free refills!!" Over the years, they've each asked for their own lifetime refill of hot chocolate and so I make it up and mail them bags or give it to them when they visiit in winter. Just sent a refill to my youngest at college... of course he was too busy with exams to go get a jug of milk for his fridge and tried it with only water! He admitted it was pretty bad!

Sounds good....but I want one with lots of powdered milk and powdered creamer....and for sure some sugar. I have, as do the parents of the kids, a coffee maker which spits out hot water on command ( or coffee if you have oput a pod in it!)...so the lack of the necessity of using milk is a good thing.
But in the absense of the recipe I remember, I may do your recipe.
Last year I did the Nestles' quick recipe for grands and neighbors....and spent $70 on Quick, powdered milk and creamer....I made a LOT of the stuff!!

I make the recipe in the BH&G, well actually my daughter does, but it uses cocoa powder not Quick.

2 c. sifted powdered sugar
1 c. powdered nondairy creamer
3-1/2 c. nonfat dry milk powder
1/2 c. sifted cocoa powder

Combine all ingredients. Measure 1/3 cup of cocoa mix and add 3/4 c. boiling water. We like to add a splash of vanilla creamer once it's made.

I use the same basic recipe as Jen, but I add a thin layer of either mini chocolate chips or the Andes mint pieces on top of the mixture and it enriches the flavor. Then, I dip a candy cane in white chocolate to tie on the top.

Could there be a typo somewhere in those proportions? It works out to a hair over one teaspoon of cocoa per cup. Compared to Ghirardelli's recipe on their cocoa which calls for 1.5 Tablespoons per cup, this is sounding like hot "something" but not chocolate.

It's what the book says, but personally I do add about 1/4 cup of extra cocoa powder to the mix.

This is perfect timing! My daughter is 'selling' hot chocolate at her 3rd grade economics fair...I've been debating on how I was going to pull that off for 60 kids at a time. Thanks Linda and dafygardennut!

I mixed up a batch (I doubled the cocoa and used Ghiradelli) and it is AWESOME! THe kids loved it, I love it and it is WAY more economical than the little packets.

I used to use my Aunt's recipe, but can't find it right now, so I'll give it to you from memory. It used all of those ingredients, but was much easier for large batches, because it used entire containers. It think it was:

1 box of powdered milk (I think it's 64 oz or something)
1 box of powdered sugar (16oz???)
1 container of nondairy creamer (8oz or 16oz -- not sure)
1 container of cocoa powder (8oz or 16 oz -- not sure what size it comes in)

Sometimes I've also added some Nestles to this also, and I've even tried it with malted milk added to it. I'll email her DIL and see if she still has the recipe.

Be aware that when you make the mixes that have the coffee creamer as an ingredient, you may be getting more than you bargain for as the ingredients in there are pretty bad. It is after all "nondairy"..... Hydrogenated oils, corn syrup and loads of transfats.

I use milk as the liquid in mine, so don't add the creamer, but I think if I wanted to do it with just water (I think Linda said she had an instant hot water), I'd try a test batch with just milk powder and no coffee creamer to see how it tasted.

I imagine the creamer adds "mouth feel" and a certain thickness because of the corn solids and oils.

I didn't have the creamer, but had all the other ingredients when I first mixed it up. We taste-tested water and half & half, warm milk, water/1/2 & 1/2 and whipping cream, warm milk and 1/2 & 1/2 and it all tasted pretty bad... until the French Vanilla creamer was brought home from the store..... that is the magic ingredient!
