Red Jamaican Hot Chocolate

I grew a couple JHC plants from saved seed. I gave one plant to a friend. He has already harvested multiple pods, and all were brown as one would expect. I took this picture today. This is my first pod to show signs of ripening. This is not the color I was expecting. I know at least some of the seed was true because my friend has already harvested true pods. Is there any chance this is a fluke and it will continue to ripen to a light brown color. I checked with my friend and he said his went straight from green to brown. Ignore the dirt on the bottom of the pod. We just got about an inch or 2 of rain in about 45 minutes.

I've been reading and I may have an idea what's happening with this pepper. Please any experts out there correct me if I'm wrong. It seems that any brown pepper has red in it's history. This was posted on another site. I take this to mean that the brown is a mutation of the red. If I remember correctly, this would mean all chocolates were initially red peppers. That red pepper plant put off a brown pod. Someone saved seeds from that brown pod and grew it out. This continued until that brown anomaly became stable. With that scenario in mind, could this just be the recessive red trait showing back up? Do I just have a Jamaican Hot Chocolate that is putting out red pods. The other site stated that just because you have red pods, it doesn't mean you have a cross. Am i on the right track?

I hope that has nothing to do with the pods I sent to you! Is that the ONLY pod so far? I cannot remember the color changes that my pods went through! Too stunned by the Chinese 5 color! The seeds may be worth saving and distributing to see what happens next year...

This year, I can send some Yellow Brain Strain and a few Trinidad Scorpion Butch if you are interested!

Lots of habanero types out there. Red,orange,yellow and chocolate. Congo Trinidad red ,brown or black Safi red , goat,antillais caribbean,Cleos dragon,faria,gambia red,francisca,red savina,mustard hab.,peach hab.,red dominica,jamaican hot chocolate,madame janette,bonda ma jackie.... Check out a few seed sites. I like Safi Red and red Dominica a lot. Don't pass up Fatalii ,Datil, paper lantern or devils tongue either. Lots of nice Chinense's out there.

I supposed the woman at the nursery must have been considering "cooking" to be eating the chiltepin peppers whole or something. Reading numerous recipes as we speak! Hoping it will be a very heat tolerant plant, too, because of where it is native to. Josh, I went to a place outside of vacaville. Morningsun Herb Farm. The only bummer was that they sold the last Spanish Spice right before I got there, which was one I really wanted. Oh well, I will wait until I fit all of these into my garden to worry about others!

I grew some congo black and jamaican chocolate this year in the field along with several other capsicum chinense varieties. I use a small amount of organic fertilizer that is made from poultry litter and some bone meal. All chinense varieties need additional calcium especially if you see the leaves curling. I only add fertilizer when transplanting and side dress again late summer. We recently had over a foot of rain then blistering heat so I will side dress the plants again since they were so stressed. I had to harvest all of the chilies before they rotted from the excessive rain and flooding.

I got the ghost peppers from bhut-peppers.com. I ordered the jamaican hot chocolates from I think it was amazon. I kinda chucked my Jamaicans up as them just being habanaros. The ones I thought were Jamaicans turned yellow to orange. The orange ghost peppers have been orange for about two weeks with the exception of about two of them that have been orange for a couple days. Did I pull those off too early?? It's just weird to me that as random as we planted them in the potter, the plants to the left of the habanaros turned orange and the half on the right turned yellow. Oh and I'm so disappointed about those Jamaicans. I really wanted to taste those.

Hey brother. Good to hear from you. Hope things have been going well for you. How's your season so far? I can't remember if these came from you or another source. I'll have to go back through my seeds and see which seed pack I planted from. I don't care how it turns out, I'm just happy to be growing it. I appreciate any donation, so please don't lose another second thinking about it.
I know the seeds were true because JayRay44 (new member) got his plant from me and has already sent pics of his harvest. They were spot on. I'm excited to see where this goes from here.

I think when you cross peppers some where down the lines..you theses black sheep peppers..I took seeds out of one pepper planted them in a isolated area.one of the plants has a big red orange pepper on it..the rest are brown as they should all be..

That's what I'm hoping is going on Tony. Hopefully it's just a fluke and the rest of the pods will grow true to form.

Hey! Things are going well here. This year I have Brain Strain yellow, Trinidad Scorpion Butch, Aji Limon, Jalapeeenos! Gotta have them! I have Caribbean red from last year, a few Bhuts, and unfortunately, I lost my treasured Fataliis! Had to start again for next year.

When they come in, I'll get some to you and some more super hot seeds!

I have taken on more herbs this year. Basil, Sage, Thyme, Rosemary. Rosemary is a tough one to get going.

But I'm with you and tony. The occasional odd pod makes for interesting future grow outs! 95+ here for over 10 days put the peppers into tree mode! They love it. Me, not so much!

You mentioned the Chinese 5 color. Do you need some of those seeds? I'll get some heading in your direction if you do.

Thanks Tim, I was saying that I do not remember the color changes that the JHC went through, so I cannot verify if they went green to red to brown... But, threatening my brain with a q-tip poking, I believe they went green to brown. I have C5C, and I am amazed at their color transformations. Has to be one of my all time favorite "check this out" plant!

Going a bit off topic... What do you have planned for the pods this year? Sauce? Powder?

Hopefully both. I had a lot of success with powder last year. I really like how you can use just as little, or as much as you want when pods are in powder form. I wasn't that lucky with the hot sauce attempts I made. I just couldn't find that balance between vinegar and the other ingredients. Hopefully this year I'll have better luck.

Agreed. There was a great fatalii sauce posted here and it was amazing.
