Cream Cheese Brandy Cherry Balls Question

Good morning,

I wanted to make Ann's recipe for Cream Cheese Brandy Cherry Balls but I don't have any brandy. My budget is already being stretched tight so I would prefer not to have to buy another liquor so I'm wondering if you guys think any of these would be acceptable (I know some probably wouldn't work at all but i'm listing everything I have just in case) I don't drink or cook with alcohol much so I don't have the palate to know ahead of time if it will work. I know sometimes alcohol can be subbed out easily but some recipes are stricter than others.

I already have:

Vodka

Southern Comfort

Malibu Coconut rum

Baileys Irish Cream

Jameson Irish Whiskey

What do you think? I was thinking maybe the Southern Comfort but I don't want to ruin the recipe using something that won't work at all because I'm too cheap to get brandy, haha.

Here's the recipe for reference:

Cream Cheese Brandy Cherry Balls (Ann_T)

Source: 1983 Oct/Nov. Entertainment and Recipe Booklet

1/2 cup maraschino cherries, quartered

2 tablespoons Brandy

1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

1 cup butterscotch chips

1 8 ounce package cream cheese

2 cups mini marshmallows

1/2 cup chopped walnuts

2 cups flaked coconut

Marinate cherries at least 4 hours or overnite in brandy Melt Chocolate chips and butterscotch chips and add cream cheese. Stir in cherries, marshmallows and walnuts and refrigerate until cold enough to roll into balls. Roll in coconut. Refrigerate. The longer the better. The flavours intensify.

I vote for Southern Comfort. Cherries and bourbon seem to go together.

chi, I make them for Amanda every year and I don't add brandy at all. I sometimes use my home canned brandied cherries and sometimes I just use maraschino cherries with no alcohol. It still comes out fine and is Amanda's favorite holiday treat.

If I had to choose, I'd go with the Irish Cream or the southern Comfort, although I think Amaretto would be good if you have some. The almond and cherry mixture is something I like.

Oh, and I don't always have butterscotch chips so sometimes I do them all chocolate. Still good!

Well, I had good intentions, and got started, but ran out of time to meet tonight's deadline. DH and I went out today on a chicken coop tour of East Dallas. (which was lots of fun, but a whole nother topic) Then I had to clean the kitchen in order to cook in it. But, my little grandson (a month away from 3 yrs. old) and I did get started on Nate's carrot cake cookies, but since we didn't finish making the dough until an hour before his bed time, and the dough has to chill at least an hour, it'll be tomorrow before we bake them and do the cream cheese part. It doesn't matter. Both DGS and I had a great time mixing up the batter. He got to taste the flour, the sugar, the butter, and all the other ingredients as they went into the mix. I've never had the cheese balls you mention, but I have this recipe in my files. I haven't made this one, but another that was similiar and it was good. sooz, I know people complain about this on a couple of cake decorating websites that I frequent, and the consensus is that it's the powdered sugar, or the cornstarch in the powdered sugar, it seems to happen with a lot of different brands. The consensus, unfortunately, also seems to be that it can't be fixed completely, although a few people said that adding more cream cheese helped and one said she added cherry preserves and used the stuff as a cupcake filling that the preserves helped the texture too. Some said it got better when they re-whipped the frosting, they were blaming tiny little lumps of cornstarch. And it happened even when the powdered sugar was sifted, so that didn't appear to be of any help either. Good luck! Annie

Martha, these are really very good, and super easy. Plus, you can make them to your taste, using all dark chocolate like I did, or milk chocolate, or add the original butterscotch like AnnT's recipe calls for. I'm not wild over marshmallows, so I keep thinking I could add something else in there instead, I just haven't decided what that would be. Annie
