Just for fun...want to help furnish this room?

I am just playing today to avoid the frustration of dealing with a very sick 3 year old (I'm currently sitting on him to keep him in bed) ;OP

Just for grins and giggles, I decided to "furnish" our hopefully new home by shopping at 1st dibs online. (This is all imaginary). I got the idea after some old bat critized me for considering going to the UK to buy furnishings in another forum :o) So I figured I'd see what I could do in my imagination while stuck at home...want to join me? I love to see what combo's people come up with for decorating a room. Everyone is so different, in all the right ways :)

So, if you had $10,000 to do this room...shop at first dibs...what would you pick for it? It's the main room in the house, and somewhat protected by the national register. I want to do it in a period style, but not nutty uncomfortable Victorian.

That bit of lace you see is the back end of a grand piano which will go. It takes up too much room.

Igloo, it sounds like fun except... I know it is original, but I would really like to throw the chandy in the virtural bonfire planned for the headless dolls.

Glass grapes just don't do it for me, if you know what I mean.

10K and 1stdibs...hmmm is the fun part the unlikelihood of that? $10K generally buys a pair of lamps and the tables to put them on ---Victorian minimalism?

Thank you all again. Lots of suggestions. I never knew about beds at Anthropologie and OneKingsLane. I will sit with her this weekend to figure out which ones she likes. I liked a few at Ballard Designs as well. arcy_gw: She is currently in the guest bedroom. It's a plain white bed and solid white/cream bedding. Just a night stand and table lamp (temporary ones) that I moved there recently. Her bed is surrounded by books lying on the ground. Now that I'm thinking more and comparing her to her younger sister, she doesn't care much about what's in the room. My younger one demanded she wants a canopy bed, desk etc and got everything she wanted as soon as we moved in. Many of you suggested bench seating. The room already has the option. I was going to bring that up eventually after the main ones are done. Close-up picture of the poufs. They have white, green, orange, blue etc. Definitely no pink. aprilneverends: I'm happy that you are present here. Thanks for sharing the stories, We've all been there. Good luck with Anthropologie tees hunt. Looks like the consensus is that the nightstand doesn't fit in the room. justerrilynn: the semihandmadedoors site is so cool. I'm going to see if we can use it someplace. I love Serena & Lily, especially that Balboa bed. But it is more than I would like to spend right now. The custom bed is not as expensive as I thought it would be. It's coming to around $1200. Ofcourse, the fabric insert would be DIY. The woodworking firm is very reputable. I was leaning towards this option because my daughter liked that bed and I liked the option of being able to change the fabric when she gets bored or if it gets dirty. Again, she may have been influenced because she didn't see many options. I bought this Uttermost art long back and she liked it very much. She has a mature taste and is generally a very practical person. I will bring up the mural idea and see what she says. If she wants it, then it's a go.

I don't think I've ever seen a coffee table in a dining room. I'm curious as to what informed your decision. I always like the addition of plants to a room and it looks like you've got great light, so they should be happy in there. I can't tell for certain, but it looks like your rug might not be positioned properly(?) You want to make sure there is room for the chairs to scoot back and remain fully on the rug. 30" beyond the table edge is a good rule of thumb.

I agree with CDR's thoughts on furniture placement. You could use a linear electric fireplace like this with the t.v. mounted above it. I think they're much nicer looking than something with a mantle. It's clean and modern looking. Just be sure the fireplace is longer than the t.v. or it will look out of balance. If you put a sofa table behind the sofa in the bay window, it will keep the sofa pulled away from the baseboard heaters well enough for the heat to circulate. Then you can add a couple of lamps for ambient lighting. Two chairs (swivel are nice for going between conversation and t.v. watching) with a table between them for drinks and an area rug to pull it all together. You'll want to add art where the candle holder is on the wall I think, to add some life and color to the space. Keep the furniture smaller and with feet so it doesn't overwhelm the smaller space.

Your seating area needs to join your fireplace. Larger rug, orientate the furniture so you have a cozy space in front of the fire. The run around/games/play area I would have behind the couch I would use as a room divider of sorts. A proper games table could one day set where the coffee table is now. While shutters are very private they will never give a room the softness, warmth, color of proper curtain panels. I would add a panel where the verticals stack to hide them away.

Yes please, may I play! I have fallen in love with 1stdibs! First, may I ask what pieces you want to stay and how do you want to use this room? This house is so spectacular, what a treat to wander around in here! You are amazing for letting us enjoy your good fortune, most of us would never be able to live so grand. Thank you for letting me pretend my own dream.

LOL Jan are you having fun? Wow that first link is exactly the rich, but not obnoxious style I hope one day to acheive in the house!

Paint that chandelier can't go :oP But we have considered moving it to the dining room. It was an exibition piece in a world fair early on (don't know which one off hand) and made it into the local paper when it was added to the house in the early 1900's so it's going to be in the house for good.

But the dolls can all go LOL

LOL Palimp...I realized after about 3 second that my $10,000 budget wasn't going to work on 1st dibs. That was enough to make me realize shopping on a whirlwind trip to the UK does make sense LOL But for giggles...let's up the budget to $30,000 on 1st dibs :oP I want a couple of chairs too heh heh

Bodacia, you are always welcome when you're in town (let me own it before I invite you in though LOL the current owners might complain). Honestly...the best pieces in that room are going...there's a desk in the corner that's fabulous (german, heavy carving but still to die for) and a parson's prayer bench, again going with the old owner. The organ might go in that corner just for fun, but it could as easily go out in the entry hall.

Pretty much everything else goes. The baby grand takes up too much room. The sofa's are pretty, but not remotely comfortable (this won't be the "family room" but we still want some comfort). That empire style sofa Jan posted would be a perfect style...you can sit and actually enjoy sitting in it :)

Gad that dining room table Jan...perfect! The one in there is rather boring IMO and the chairs are as well. I am a passionate dining room decorator LOL I want RICH deep tones and fabulous mahogany furniture...and the velvet ;) Woosa that was pretty! Much more the style I'd like to see there.

This will be so much fun to decorate with ya'll heh heh but the reality budget will not match the budget I'm making up heh heh

I have to think about that...there are a lot of rooms in this joint heh heh We talked about doing a shopping trip to the UK (just me...baby stays home with dad) to shop at warehouses and ship back by the crate. I used to bank a client who did this for their shop and it was amazing what they could get over there.

Reality will probably be we do a room at a time :) But it will still be fun.

LOL Bodacia...you know that's the house right? Where did you find that picture? It's fabulous.

That gray house there on the left...the portion that is the tallest was the old carriage house for our house. We want to reproduce it on a lot next to us (we have to convince the owners to move LOL). And the huge building is the court house...where I've paid a ticket or two in my past heh heh

I have to have one of those attached chairs. do they have a name? They'd be great in the entry...so cool :) But I'm still drooling over that attic space...

I'm stuck on the pic though...it had to be taken from a construction crane or helicoptor or something...there's nothing that high across from the house...what's the story???

Hope they will share with you! Is the forground sometimes green? Hope you can reproduce the carraige house too.
The attic ceilings had my imagination enchanted. Those rooms are not 'done' but oh my, they could be so wonderful!
I noticed some of the other historic inn were, for me, spoiled with the interior decor. Example, the English Inn , I love the exterior, but hated the harsh colors inside. Learned I have a very strong negative reaction to Pepto Pink any where, lol.
I must back track to find those chairs, I'd remove the finial from that one, afraid I'd spill my wine and don't want to risk breaking my fine antique crystal.....

Oh my gosh, is that your new house to be? It's divine! Lucky you.

Although I'm not that old bat, I agree it would be nice if you could keep your money in this country. Heaven knows we need all the money we can get in circulation to help our economy right now and over the coming months and next few years. This church mouse even dipped into my savings and spent some on my house to do my share to help out, piddly though it was. I salute your patriotism.

That chandelier is flat-out scrumptious. I can't even imagine its value on the market, not that you'd ever sell it. It must be worth thousands. The hand blown grapes give it a wonderful whimsical quality. I hope you can post some close up pictures of it. It's the Victorian version of a Dale Chuhuly.

You can google reproduction Victorian furniture and find fabulous stuff. But I prefer real antiques. Do you? They appreciate. To collect those will take time but I think you will have a ton of fun doing it. Don't forget eBay for some things, too. I hope you find a lovely neighbor lady friend there who would love to go antiquing with you. You'll be too far for me (I'm across the water) but I would sure love going with you if you were on this side. What a grand project!

LOL At bodica :) and gad those sofa's are all fabulous. Maybe I have to shop craigs list more often LOL (I don't even bother here because it's normally junk).

Oceanna we'll have to do a Seattle lunch group...held at an antique store LOL to make it worth the trip. I love your description of the light fixture. It really was art glass in it's time :) A small part of me wants to move it to the dining room (where they have a very cheap victorian copy) and then put something else in the parlor. We'll see how that goes.

I'm definately into the real thing when it comes to antiques. I grew up in Port Townsend where you're surrounded by the things and have always loved them. One reason we're thinking about refurnishing the house is because they have a lot of fakes and it's very obvious. I'm sure I will do some shopping locally and in Seattle, but the idea of the trip abroad also appeals because the selection is so good. Our antiques here are their garbage sale items in the UK LOL But we'll see. I know my mother is going to get tired of me dragging her through antique stores pretty quick heh heh

"Green & Grapes"

Wish I had photoshop to try these in your parlor, "Green & Grapes" to go with the Chandelier!
Well, we do have exquisite, expensive taste! Belter was from Germany, even had a Lincoln collection in the White House.

His work was exceptional but limited by his death. The only dates I found were 1850-1860. He did not invent laminating, but did invent his process for the smooth outside curved back rising curved inside for the sculptures we see in the front.
I'm now a serious fan and very much respect and appreciate his work. Oh, Meek's are sometimes misidentified as Belter because of a wedding gift for his daughter, ? but not thought logical that Meek would not gift his own work to his own child, and would give her his competiture Belter's creations?
Then there is a connection to Steinway piano's.....me asleep

KD I love that green one. We have to change out the light in the tower area if we leave the grapes in this room and that would look so cool with the grapes :) (the light there now is the one shown in the third pic I posted). It totally does not go with the grapes!

You know I've never been a huge fan of overdesigned frilly things...LOL And now I'm gonna fill my house with them Heh heh
