dgmarie, have you talked to the kitchen designers at Home Depot or Lowe's? My guess is they'd be able to help you with your bathroom layout free of cost.

I guess I pretty much assumed they would NOT talk to me unless I was buying my entire bathroom from them.

I have a Home Depot so close to me but every time I come on the forums I'm scared to death of what I'd get if I used them.

If I were you I'd post some pics/diagrams on the Baths Forum and ask for help. Folks over there are *amazing* if you give them enough detail to work with--and that's the only cost--the work to do a helpful enough initial post. Seriously. Do that first. See you over there? :)

We worked with a designer at Home Depot when designing our new homes kitchen. We could have walked away at any time without purchasing from them. It's a free service they provide in hopes you'll buy your cabinets from them. We never talked flooring or anything else with them, but I'm sure that either of the designers, still there after seven plus years, would have been happy to help us. I talked to one of them about a week ago asking if they'd help us in designing the fireplace surround. He was busy at the time with another customer and had an appointment next, but said he'd be happy to help us. Granted he knows us, but I've stopped and talked to the designers at other HoDes and Lowe's with the same kind of helpfulness. They've all been more than happy to even just give price quotes on a cabinet piece I found online at the Kraftmaid Design site I belong too.
The only problem with someone designing your bathroom layout here at the GW is that you'd have to find the same sized shower/tubs, vanities etc... when you went shopping. Where-as at HoDe or Lowe's they have the specs for loads of items you can purchase from them and I'm sure would be will to work around specs you gave them from other sources as they would if you were only replacing certain items in an existing bathroom. Personally I'd try them first because of that unless you already have specs of items you'll be adding to your bathroom and just need help seeing if they'll fit your space.

Usually the folks who do your cabinets are the most helpful, and often they are NKBA certified, or at the very least have tons of kitchen and bath layout experience, since that's where most of their product goes. A good GC or tile guy might be helpful, but you don't really know what level of expertise they have (unless they were recommended by someone for that reason). I can't really speak to HD or Lowe's, except to say that I wouldn't depend on anyone who works at my local HD (but that might just be the people who work at mine.....yours might actually be professionals in the field).

Don't underestimate the value of the help around here -- the bathroom & kitchen forums have gotten me through 3 major reno projects. Folks around here are very knowledgeable, as Flyleft said, if you give them enough details.

Also, you should collect pictures of bathrooms that you like so you can give your designer an idea of what you want. Start at a site like Houzz, or even the galleries at HGTV or any of the major magazine sites. Often, just looking at those pictures will give you ideas about your layout & finishes.
