No worries, most of what we do here is silly.

I would not use anything that I thought "clashed horribly", but I also don't like things too matchy-matchy.

Just asking the question means to me, that you are not happy with the combo. I would get the dinnerware that I thought coordinated with the granite so that each time I looked at them together I would enjoy them both. Why clash with such a frequent combination? Make you heart sing in your kitchen. You won't regret it!

Thank you :-) The plates would be AWFUL with the Aurora Borealis or the Hurricane. My new island chairs are black leather, also bought with black and gold granite in mind. We are already using them.

The red plates have a little black, I don't think the yellow has any. I don't like matchy-matchy either, but clashy-clashy would cause me pain. I guess that's it, then. No beautiful Aurora Borealis or Hurricane, unless I can use in it our bathroom upstairs. If we ever get around to it.

Corgi_mom, I love that phrase, "make your heart sing." That's exactly what I want when I walk into my new kitchen! I'm too embarrassed to post pix of my existing kitchen--it's SO BAD!--but I dream of the day I can post pix of the new one. Hopefully in 8 weeks at the most. Yes, I'm an optimist :-)

I started to question the same thing about my dinnerware and our new granite.....if the Mister ever gets us to that point that is! I don't dare mention to him about my concerns of the granite needing new dishes. LOL

Can you put a placemat under them and make it work? Otherwise, just send me the dishes. They'll work on my red/blue/yellow tablecloths AND my oak table.

I would use the AB granite that I loved! Return the dishes, give them as a gift, donate them, sell them or store them. Buy new dishes that compliment the counters you bought because you loved them. (I'm going to buy new dinnerware when house is done-shhh...DH doesn't know)

You'll be so happy you bought the granite you loved and the dishes that look great on it!

How long will you keep the new kitchen? How long will you love the plates? Perhaps what this is telling you is that you should choose granite which will go with more things so as your taste in dishes and accessories change, you will have more options.

We (actually, I) chose our china when we got married and went with a very pretty off white pattern. Our house has all white, black, gray, chrome, and other non-off-white colors.
I know dh is into our silver and chrome look, so he'd go for new plates. I feel so bad because I opened 1 box and used it once. The rest of our china is untouched.
We have been married for 11 years next month... What a huge waste!

Funny. I was just thinking yesterday that since my everyday dishes will be stored in a glass-fronted hutch cab in the new kitchen, my current dishes might look horrible with the marble and white cabs. I was already thinking that some new dinnerware was in order! ;). Like bh401, I haven't told my DH either!

I'd say return the dishes if you can, pick the granite you fall in love with, then find some dishes to go with it. Why be stuck with a granite you bought to go with the dishes that will be chipped and broken in a couple of years? Or does that only happen at my house?

breezygirl, you've had those dishes FOREVER!!! Definitely time to replace them!

bh401 has it right. The granite will be around for a very long time, the dishes won't.

Pick out the granite you love, don't worry about the dishes. They are a minor player and after the granite is installed, go shopping for new ones.

I got lucky, my old everyday dishes look fine in the new kitchen and now I can look for more fun dishes for entertaning.

I still have my old dishes as well but am waiting until I settle on accent colours before I choose new dishes. I'm not sure if I want to go neutral or include an accent colour on them.

You are all so wonderful! I should have known I wasn't the only one who thought new granite deserved new plates :-) I only told dh about the new dishes after our massage therapist said she'd take the old ones. NONE of which have broken in 16 years. They're pretty thick and sturdy. The new ones are much thinner and probably WILL get broken! My original plan was to put them in the new cabinets as if they had just magically appeared. Hee, hee.

LOL, pinch_me, these plates all have ROOSTERS! I did get black bamboo placemats and yellow napkins. Can't remember if you posted on the dinnerware spam thread.

Wellll...I read and appreciated all your comments, and I've been thinking. We are changing the kitchen/family room walls from pale green (which went with our horrid, icky pickled oak cabinets and--ugh--white 4x4 tiled countertops) to yellow. All the windows and doors will have 3" cherry frames. I am getting rid of the cornice boxes and the lace curtains. I want a clean, bright, contemporary look. I think that even though I LOVE the AB and Hurricane, there just isn't any place for blue. I really do like the rooster plates bc they are SO bright and cheery, and I got matching coffee cups, too :-) I think a gold and black granite will add drama to what is really a very simple kitchen. Plus, I have to paint my fish tank gold. It's verdigris. Wonder if I have to take the fish OUT?

The house has NO style of its own. But the kitchen will :-)

Oh, I probably did. I'm always looking for new dishes. why? I have no idea. I try to find one of a kind vintage at the second hand store. Sometimes I score, sometimes not. I have enough that all of you could come for a picnic and I could supply the plates. I can live without roosters, though. They're OK and I have 2 live ones but I don't envy anyone's rooster plates.
