Pogo and Annie (a very short photo essay)

It is rare to be able to photograph Pogo (the sweet son) and Annie (the wicked mother) together, but I spotted him bravely sitting within spitting distance of her the other morning as she slept in a basket.

This is why it's a rare event to see them together. Annie spotted (or smelled?) Pogo, and took quick action. Too quick for my camera without a flash.

And then Annie had the basket to herself again. One could say Annie isn't a social animal.

They're beautiful kitties.

Annie is thinking "She brought him into this world, and she can take him out of this world," to paraphrase one of my neighbors. (She says it in jest to her grown children.)

I love, love, love your cabinets in the background. Can you tell me more about them?

Martinca, as my screenname implies, I have four kids. My belly has not seen the light of day in years. I too am not overweight but do have a tummy bulge sag as a result. I don't wear low rise anything but I do wear mid-rise pants, etc. it's a bit of a quandary b/c I need to make sure my tummy is covered while at the same time, make sure my butt isnt overextended like it would be in mom jeans that are high waisted. This skirt is not low waisted. I just put this skirt on to be sure (and golddust, I was wrong - I don't have the charcoal color but rather the gray one and a tan one) and it sits much higher in me than in the photo, about an inch below my belly button. For my own body type, I've found that pants,etc that hit me sort of in the middle of my tummy actually look best. Anything that goes higher then creates kind of a bubble effect where my belly is by cinching where I'm smaller - so rather than suck me it, it makes it jut out, if that makes sense. This is especially true in skirts that zip and button on the front. They don't hold me in if the button is higher and above my belly fat. Hard to explain but it just works for me but I'm for sure not exposing myself like in the photos above! And I have the hardest time with bathing suits! I love tankinis in theory but it is so hard to find styles where the top actually comes over the top of the bottoms rather than meeting at the top. One move and my belly is showing! I love the designs of the Athleta suits but unfortunately nearly all their suits have the "meet and greet" rather than full coverage. And now bathing suit is nearing...ugh!

Galgal if I ever do you'll be the first to know. Virginia, they haven't got to her yet or anyone else in that area, that I know of. It's hard clay over there, which could account for slow growth, but since she's growing inch by inch and everyone says she's a slow grower, I think that could be another reason. I've noticed That roses over there do tend to take a little longer to take off and I think it's the clay and because I'm still, adding to that area trying to make it better with mulch, rabbit manure, chicken manure, ect. The ones they have gotten have always been in soil that I've worked for years, and now is over shaded to much from the trees. Did you see the post where I told you they tried to get SDDJ? I'm glad I caught it in time, and that might be why he didn't root. I noticed after that through this year he was losing a few canes and I was wondering why, but was either so busy, or feeling bad I almost didn't catch it. I dug him up and planted him really deep. I read in Susan Verrier's gallica book that deep planting discouraged voles, and I was out of my main go to to get rid of them. I don't think my colder weather in the winter has anything to do with it, or atleast I don't recall her losing any cane during winter. I'll pay extra close attention this year.

The same goes for any of my pictures. If there are any in particular that you like perhaps for printing out,I'd be willing to put hi-res somewhere for you to download. When we were there in 2011 they said that the the previous December there was a massive rainstorm that caused mudslides down the coast in Portabello, and caused Gatun Lake to rise enough that even having the spillways at the Gatun Dam fully open wasn't enough, and the water was threatening to overtop the dam or flood the canal area or something very bad. So for the first time in the history of the canal they had all of the gates of the canal locks open with water just racing through. We were told that the leak pictured here was caused by damage that occurred when they did that.

For the sake of anyone whom this might benefit, now or in the future, I wanted to note that this rose does amazingly well in Arkansas. After killing a "maiden" of it, I acquired an own root plant and potted it up for a year when I lived in Seattle. It was the only rose I brought with me to Arkansas (I pruned the heck out of the baby plant and basically bare rooted it, stuck it in a plastic bag, and took it in my carryon luggage. It sat recovering in a pot for probably half a year before I could plant it out. It grew pretty well straight away when I stuck it in the ground. Here is a picture of it in May of its second summer in the ground: And here it is in October of the same year: You can see that both the rose and the rosemary grew quite a bit over the summer. It is an outstanding plant -- almost no blemishes on the leaves, beautiful habit and foliage, prolific flowers that are beautifully fragrant, not thorny! I wish I could have taken it with me on my recent move back to Washington State. Alas, I'm also going to have to find another one soon (but first, I need a garden, lol!) Here are some more pictures. Folks in the south, try this rose. It is great.

Caroline, they're Kraftmaid beadboard kitchen cabinets (in birch, Honey Spice finish).

This pic was taken when the kitchen was brand new--five years ago. Thus the absence of clutter. :-)

She really is. I rescued them from my neighbor's barn when Pogo was a little kitten. He and Annie were a devoted nursing couple, but after he weaned she wanted no part of him. When he'd try to initiate play, she would hiss at him and attack. He hardly ever approaches her anymore. It's sad, because they're the only two house cats now, and Pogo would love to have a playmate.

Right now my two elderly dogs require a lot of my attention, but maybe when they go I'll consider adopting another kitty. Of course, there's no guarantee Pogo and the new one would become fast friends . . .

Annie's personality might have been affected by an illness she had shortly after I brought her here. Her liver enzymes were so bad that the vet refused to spay her. After she recovered (and was spayed), he told me he hadn't expected her to pull through. Ever since then she's been a little odd--sometimes seeking out attention, other times cringing if I try to touch her.

When I first met Annie, I was brushing a huge amount of snow off my car. Not knowing she was at my feet, I buried her in it. But she just removed herself, shook herself off, and rubbed against my legs, purring. She has not exhibited that level of outgoingness and affection since her illness. But she seems pretty happy otherwise. She loves soft beds and warmth, two things she never had as my neighbor's barn cat.

Sounds like Annie used you and threw you away once she got in the door!! LOL! Nice kitties; they all have their own quirks and personalities, don't they? Really pretty picture of Pogo in the tree on the picture of the day thread.
